History / Biographical: Dr. Jean Knox (McDonald) Petrie, born 1913, was an active member of the Alpine Club of Canada, Edmonton Section during the 1930s and 1940s, attending the Alpine Club of Canada summer camps from 1937-1940, 1942 and 1946 as well as making many weekend climbs in the Jasper area with Captain E. R. Gibson. In 1938 she was one of the four women to make a first ascent of Mount Columbia by women, as well as Mount Forbes in 1940. Married in 1960 to Robert Petrie (died 1966), Dr. Jean Petrie worked in Ottawa, Ontario (1940-1945) in munitions gauge testing for the National Research Council. Following the war, she worked as an astrophysicist for the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory in Victoria, British Columbia (1945-1966) and taught at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, British Columbia. (1966-1971).

Scope & Content: Fonds relate to mountaineering with the Alpine Club of Canada. The fond consists of three series: I. Textual records consist of 8 newsclippings from July 1938 pertaining to the first ascent of Mount Columbia by women: Lillian Gest, Kathleen Chapman, Christine Reid, Jean McDonald, and Jean Petrie as well as a photocopied "Guide to the Tonquin" signed by K. History / Biographical: Bruno Engler's Veteran's Race was initially hosted by Bruno Engler at the Sunshine Village ski resort in Banff in 1967. In its earlier years, Bruno Engler would complete the downhill track first, and would use his recorded time as a benchmark for participants to beat. Engler participated in the race for many years. The race was typically divided into several competition categories by age range and men's and women's races. Following a day of races, there is an awards ceremony held each year for participants. Bruno's ski race, renamed the Bruno Engler Memorial Ski Race after Bruno's passing in 2001, is currently "the longest consecutively running annual ski race in Canadian history". 2019 marked the 53rd annual race, which was held at Cascade Mountain. In recent years, the "Bruno Engler Family Fun Race", an additional race for parents and children, has been added as part of the original event.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of 30 cm of textual and visual records previously held in 3 manuscript boxes, and 1 briefcase belonging to Bruno Engler. Fonds consists of two series: Series I : 1952 - 1990 Series II : 1991 - 2016 Bruno Engler Memorial race committee information, race results and Bruno Engler's personal papers originally held in his personal briefcase. Also included are photos of the races and awards - these photos were held in Bruno's briefcase along with his own files. Briefcase from accession has been transferred to Heritage. Textual records (M559) range from 1952 to 2016 [includes documents from every year excluding 1953 - 1966] and pertain to annual ski races. Include meetings/agenda notes, ephemera, handwritten notes, registration forms, mailing lists, race results, and other relevant notes. History / Biographical: John Monod, 1913-2002, skier, adventurer and mountaineer, was born in Geneva, Switzerland. Before moving to Canada, John Monod was a world class skier and racer in Europe. He worked in a ski shop in Megeve, France selling skis and providing private ski lessons. Well known for their skills, experience and knowledge, John Monod and friend Fred Iselin were hired by the mayor of Chamonix, France to develop lift service skiing. While in Chamonix, John and Fred also operated a shop selling skis and clothing. In 1947, John Monod immigrated to Canada. Arriving in Banff, Alberta, he was met by fellow Swiss, Bruno Engler. John became a ski instructor at Mount Norquay and worked for Elizabeth Rummel at Skoki Lodge as aide-de-camp, hauling food supplies into the area. In 1949 he established Monod Sports at Sunshine Lodge (Sunshine Village) providing ski tours during the day and working from his store in the evening. Ca.1953, in partnership with local businessman Mel Medic, Monod established Monod and Medic in Banff. The business was open year round and sold sportswear, mountaineering equipment and fishing gear in addition to ski equipment and clothing. Within a year, Monod bought out Mel Medic's shares in the business and by 1963, Monod's Banff location required more space. Monod rented store space in Harmony Lane on Banff Avenue and Monod Sports remained in this location until 2001 when they relocated to their present location at 129 Banff Ave. In 1956, a fire destroyed the Sunshine Lodge store. Monod soon re-established the Sunshine Lodge location and operated it until ca.1960. In the 1960s, John Monod established a sportswear boutique at the Banff Springs Hotel, which was managed by his wife Kay. He also opened a ski shop and rental store at the Banff Springs Hotel and established the Banff Springs Hotel Ski School which ran from 1969 to 1972. In 1969, Monod opened a retail store at Chateau Lake Louise. Monod and his wife Kay have three sons, Phillip (b.1957), Peter (b.1958), and Nick (b.1961) and a daughter (Stephanie Townsend), who were all very involved in ski racing.; In the early 1960s Monod, along with other entrepreneurs and Banff business owners, worked to bring the Olympics to Banff. While unsuccessful in their Olympic bid, Monod continued his efforts to bring racing competitions to Banff and played an important role in the decision to hold the 1972 World Cup at Norquay. Monod was also active in the Banff Ski Runners for many years.

History / Biographical: Kay Powell (nee Kathleen Burt-Smith) attended the private Mountain School in Banff, Alberta which was founded by Margaret and Henry Greenham in 1920. She was sent to the nearest private boarding school as a result of a fear of bombing in her home town of Victoria, BC by the Japanese during World War II. Kay Powell started half-way through her grade 9 year in 1940 and stayed until 1944. She won a school prize in 1943 for "friendliness" and returned to Victoria, B.C. after the war where she married James Michael Powell and had two children and three grandchildren. She was an avid boater and passed away in 2017.

History / Biographical: Murray McCullagh, b.1927 is an artist/sculptor who lived in Banff, Alberta, Canada from 1928-1965. McCullagh attended Banff public schools, the Banff School of Fine Art, Sir Geo. Williams College in Montreal and the Art Centre in Los Angeles. While living in Banff, he worked for Brewster Transport, Sunshine Village, Parks Department, and the National Research Council's Cosmic Ray Lab on Sulphur Mountain. In 1958 McCullagh married Vosée Wanner of Montreal and they lived in the log cabin at 110 Bear Street, now the property of the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies. In 1965 McCullagh moved to Los Angeles for a position with National Graphics Design firm and retired in 1987.

History / Biographical: Roy Andersen was born in Kirkenes, Norway and moved to Canada with his family in the 1950s. He has a "Diploma in Sports Administration" and taught skiing as a member of the Les Voyageurs Ski School (affiliated with the Sunshine Ski School) and is the recepient of the "Alberta Achievement Award" due to his contributions to the sport of skiing. He has been a freelance commercial photographer for 30 years and also trained to be a pilot in the 1960s.
