Harbour views, often with boats, dominate his early work. This studious sketch, with the paper divided into three sections to accommodate mast, reflection, and winch details, was probably made when the artist was about 20.” -- “Charles John Collings, 1848-1931” Catalogue Raisonne by Linda Heath

The design finishes with a half circle of small pink and red roses, beneath which are a large red rose, a large white rose, and a purple and yellow pansy at the tip.At the top corner of the grid, the number “4741” is written. This is most likely the pattern’s number. At the bottom of the grid, there is an inscription that reads “Berlin bei Carl F. W. Wicht” which translates from German as “Berlin by Carl F. W. Wicht”. There is a large, bold “3” in the bottom left corner of the grid. The pattern is used to create a slipper.
