History / Biographical: George K. K. (Tommy) Link, 1887-1979, was professor of Plant Pathology at the University of Chicago, Illinois. Link spent many summers between 1928 and 1977 studying the Lake O'Hara region and building trails there, accompanied by his wife, Adeline Link, d.1943. The Links were frequently guided by Jim Boyce.

Scope & Content: Fonds pertains to the Lake O'Hara region, particularly its history, geology, botany, trail systems and visitation.; I. Writing, research and translation, ca.1887-ca.1975, ca.45 cm, including some photographs. Consists of manuscript drafts, notes, correspondence, maps and print material pertaining to writing, editing and translation projects, including "The Ways of Lake O'Hara," and the "Map of Lake O'Hara Region South Area."; II. History / Biographical: George "Lucky" Skirrow, b.1925, was a boatman at Lake Minnewanka in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. Skirrow worked for Allen Mather, ca.1948-1951, operating tour boats on the Bow River and at Lake Minnewanka. He then purchased the Lake Minnewanka business and operated it until 1977. Skirrow retired to Victoria, British Columbia.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists mainly of photographs pertaining primarily to the boat launch, boats and boating at Lake Minnewanka; also, Lake Minnewanka and area, Lake Minnewanka Power Development and Lucky Skirrow. Includes set of aerial views of Lake Minnewanka and area produced by the Department of National Defense, pre-1940. History / Biographical: George McLean (Tatâga Mânî), 1871-1967, also known as Walking Buffalo, was a Stoney Chief and Moral Rearmament representative at Morley, Alberta, Canada. McLean was educated at Morley and Red Deer, Alberta, Canada and Winnipeg, Manitoba. He received his English name when "adopted" by Rev. John MacLean, who supported his education. A successful rancher, McLean was Chief of the Bearspaw Band, Stoney First Nation, from 1920 until 1935. In 1958, he became deeply involved in the Moral Rearmament Movement and made public appearance tours in England, Europe, New Zealand and Africa.

History / Biographical: George Noble, 1879-1965, was a professional photographer at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Noble was born in Woolwich, England where he apprenticed as a photographer. He came to Banff in 1909 to operate a photographic business for his uncles, George and Bill Fear, who owned a curio business. In 1919, Noble bought the photographic business and, in 1932, acquired the remainder of the Fear Brothers business. He built a new studio and shop, which offered portraiture, photo- finishing and framing services and sold photographic supplies, camera equipment and English china. In addition to portraiture, George Noble and employees, such as photographer Bill Jamieson, produced a wide range of documentary, scenic and commercial views. Noble's shop offered black and white and hand-coloured prints of local events and Rocky Mountain views. George Noble was an active member of the community, serving on both the Banff School Board and the Banff Board of Trade for many years. Upon his retirement in 1957, his business was acquired by a group of investors which included Bill Jamieson, lab-technician and photographer for the Noble business from 1936 to 1957

History / Biographical: George Harrison Paris, 1872-1960, was a barber and amateur photographer at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Paris was born in London, England and came to the Rocky Mountains on the Canadian Pacific Railway, ca.1889. He settled in Banff in 1892, working first as an attendant at Dr. R. G. Brett's Grandview Hotel bathhouse. There he learned the barber trade from a patron, and by 1903 had established his own barber shop. Also in 1903, Paris married Ida Winberg and the couple opened a summer tea house and ice cream parlor on Banff Avenue. In 1922, a restaurant was added to the Paris Tea Room. George Paris was active in both the Banff Curling Club and the Banff Skating Club and taught figure- skating. George and Ida Paris had four children - Cyril, Georgina (Georgie) and twins, Herb and Ted

History / Biographical: John Hartefeld was born Johann Hartefeld in 1915 in Stettin, Poland (Germany). He studied physical education and manual arts from 1930 to 1933 and taught at a boys school in Berlin-Spandau from 1939 to 1945. Hartefeld moved to Garmish Partenkirchen, Germany where he worked as a ski instructor, sports teacher and faltboat (watercraft) instructor and guide.; Gertrud Vinzenzia Sattler was born in 1920 in Wilkischen, Czechoslovakia and attended business college and language school in Prague, earning a certificate as a bilingual secretary in English and German. From 1945 to 1953 Gertrud Sattler worked for the U.S. Army in Garmish Partenkirchen as a secretary, bookkeeper and interpreter. She met John Hartefeld in Garmish Partenkirchen and together they immigrated to Canada in 1953 and settled in Toronto, Ontario.; Gertie and John married in Toronto in 1953 and moved to Banff, Alberta settling at 213 Bear Street. In 1963, John and Gertie moved into their new home at 340 Muskrat Street, a house built by John. John Hartefeld earned his Alberta Journeyman's Certificate in Carpentry in 1958 and completed his B.Ed in Industrial Arts in the Faculty of Education in 1966 by attending summer schools and through correspondence courses with Queen's University and the University of Calgary. He taught at the Banff High School from 1957 to 1979 and was instrumental in designing and assembling the industrial arts shop at the Banff High School in 1962. John Hartefeld gave ski lessons to school-age students at Mount Norquay and he designed and built the wrought iron chandeliers and wall lamps in his home and also at the Bugaboo, Cariboo, and Bobbie Burns lodges. John enjoyed fishing, windsurfing, and building his own windsurfing boards for sailing at Vermillion Lakes. John Hartefeld died in a bicycle accident on Norquay Road in June 1997.; From 1953 to 1959 Gertie worked for J.D. Hansen of Banff doing insurance, real estate and legal work. From 1959 to 1964 Gertie worked for Dermod Owen-Flood, Barristers and Solicitors as a legal secretary and bookkeeper and from 1963 to 1966 she worked for Nesbitt, Beaumont et al. Barristers and Solicitors. Gertie provided secretarial and bookkeeping services for Rocky Mountain Guides (now CMH) from 1966 to 1968 and from 1962 to 1975, she worked as an insurance and real estate agent and was an officer of Banff Insurance Services Ltd. In 1975, Gertie became an insurance consultant for CMH. Gertie Hartefeld enjoyed skiing, fishing, cooking, and tennis. She was an accomplished weaver and a member of the Harvie Heights Weavers Guild. Her garments could be purchased at The Quest in Banff. Gertie Hartefeld died in 2002.

History / Biographical: Gladys Gardner (née Atkin), 1915-1970, was the daughter of Dr. Gilbert Atkin of Banff. Gladys married Noel Gardner of Jumping Pound in 1945. Both Gladys and Noel were active skiers and climbers and in 1948, Gladys and Noel moved to Glacier National Park, B.C. where Noel took a Warden's position observing weather patterns and recording avalanche activity. Noel Gardner became an avalanche consultant in the Roger's Pass for the Federal Department of Public Works until 1964 when he and Gladys moved to a ranch west of Pincher Creek.
