History / Biographical: Rhoda Rouse (1902-1978) was born in Daysland Alberta (then N.W.T.), the daughter of John James and Eva Olive Williamene (Russell) Rouse. Unmarried and with no children, she was a member of the Class of 1923 in the Arts program at the University of British Columbia. She was a teacher at Maryland School south of Ogden and Pine Creek school near DeWinton, Alberta for several years and thereafter worked for Royalite Oil in Calgary for approximately 20 years. Upon her retirement at Royalite she returned to substitute teaching in the 1960s. She was a lifetime member of the Alpine Club of Canada, joining in 1944 and was active in the club and in the ACC camps. She spent much of her life in the outdoors and was a photography enthusiast. She was a friend of Joe Smith of Silver City.

History / Biographical: Ronald Leslie Duke, 1912-1978, was a professional photographer at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Born in Calgary, Alberta, Duke was educated at Calgary, Banff and the University of Washington in Seattle, USA. After wartime service with the National Film Board of Canada, Ron Duke returned to Banff, where he worked in the photography business for the next thirty years. Here he formed a link in a business lineage of photographers, including George Noble, and was for a time an employee of Noble's corporate successors. After 1958, Duke worked closely with the Banff School of Fine Arts, photographing productions and providing documentary services. After sustaining considerable damage in a fire which destroyed Banff's Mount Royal Hotel in 1967, Ron Duke's business resumed and, in partnership with George Baracos, continued until retirement in 1975.

History / Biographical: Roy Andersen was born in Kirkenes, Norway and moved to Canada with his family in the 1950s. He has a "Diploma in Sports Administration" and taught skiing as a member of the Les Voyageurs Ski School (affiliated with the Sunshine Ski School) and is the recepient of the "Alberta Achievement Award" due to his contributions to the sport of skiing. He has been a freelance commercial photographer for 30 years and also trained to be a pilot in the 1960s. After flight school, he continuted to each skiing and did the promotional work for the Banff Chair Lift. Roy Howard Andersen and Ellen Beatrice Wilson married on December 27, 1969 at Rundle United Church.

History / Biographical: Roy Jamieson, d.2003, was a life member of the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies since 1974, receiving the Townsend Cup Trophy on numerous occasions. The Townsend Cup is awarded to the member who submitted the best photograph taken while on a trail ride. From 1975 to 1986, Jamieson was a regular recipient of the Townsend Cup and much of his work is included in the official photographic history documenting the activities and functions of The Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies.

History / Biographical: In the 1920s John Murray Gibbon, Head of the Publicity Department of the Canadian Pacific Railway, recommended the creation of new activities and recreational pursuits for tourists visiting the national parks. Gibbon decided that horseback riding and sleeping outdoors in tents, teepees, or railway bungalow camps would appeal to many tourists and the Skyline Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies was established. Outdoor enthusiasts who visited Banff annually along with Banff and area residents proposed a similar organization for hikers. Gibbon responded with the Skyline Trail Hikers of the Canadian Rockies, with their inaugural hike occurring in 1933. The first annual meeting of the Skyline Trail Hikers of the Canadian Rockies was held immediately following the first hike and N.B. Sanson, retired meteorologist of Banff, became the Club's first president. The five vice-presidents elected were: Major Selby Walker of Calgary, Peter Whyte of Banff, Carl Rungius of New York, Ian Somerville of Philadelphia, and Miss Georgina Englehard of New York. A secretary-treasurer and council members were also elected and a certified hiking mileage of 25 miles in the Canadian Rockies was set as the criteria for admission of new members.; In 1961 C.P.R. sponsorship ceased for both the Trail Riders and the Trail Hikers of the Canadian Rockies. Both groups re-organized as separate volunteer, non-profit organizations and the Skyline Trail Hikers of the Canadian Rockies was renamed the Skyline Hikers of the Canadian Rockies. The offices of the five vice-presidents as well as the honourary president were discontinued and replaced with an executive commitee consisting of President, Vice-President, Executive Secretary, and Committee Chairperson.; The Skyline Hikers of the Canadian Rockies establish a new base camp location each summer and coordinate five 1-week camps from that base camp throughout the summer.

History / Biographical: Stan J. "Windy" Carr, 1890-1983, was a guide and outfitter and dude ranch owner at Lake Louise, Alberta and Tete Jaune Cache, British Columbia, Canada. Carr, an English immigrant, began working for Brewster Transport Co. at Lake Louise in 1910. He worked as a pony-boy around Lake Louise and began leading pack train trips. Rev. Dr. S. Knapp, Worcester, Massachusetts was a client for thirty years. Carr later operated the Half Diamond M ranch near Tete Jaune Cache, B.C.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of guiding papers, 1913-1938, pertaining mainly to the Half Diamond M Ranch at Tete Jaune Cache; poems, n.d., 1910, 1940; lengthy manuscript by S. Knapp, ca.1920, titled "Camping with Windy: Tales of the Canadian Rockies"; and photographs pertaining to Carr, associates, clients and pack trips, 1910-1914. History / Biographical: Ethel "Tillie" Knight, 1910-1993, was a community worker and sportswoman at Banff, Alberta. Born in Quebec, Knight came to Banff in 1922 with her parents and brothers, Norman and Harry. For 34 years Tillie worked as an accountant with Parks Canada, retiring in 1971. She was a dedicated volunteer, playing leading roles in the I.O.D.E., the Canadian Institute for the Blind, St. Mary's Catholic Church, Banff Library board, Mineral Springs Hospital, Royal Canadian Legion, the Red Cross and the Seniors Society, of which she was president. Knight was instrumental in establishing the Bow Valley Senior Citizens Lodge in Canmore and fund raising for the Banff Library and Seniors Centre. She also won numerous awards, including "Woman of Distinction" from Soroptimists International, a commemorative medal for the 125th anniversary of the confederation of Canada, and trophies for her main sports interest, golf.

History / Biographical: Thomas Henry Lonsdale, 1886-1975, was a clergyman and teacher at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Florence Sanderson (Bennett) Lonsdale, 1894-1972, was a nurse and community worker. Tom Lonsdale emigrated to Canada in 1908 from England. He studied education and received his BA and BD in Alberta. From 1925 to 1958 Lonsdale was minister at Banff's Rundle Memorial United Church. Lonsdale was active in local organizations such as the Rotary Club and Senior Friends and was particularly interested in local theatre, being one of the founders of the Banff Literary and Dramatic Society. During the Second World War, Lonsdale served as chaplain at the prisoner of war camp at Ozada, near Seebe, Alberta. After retiring in 1958, Lonsdale joined the Banff School of Fine Arts, first as a student and later as a sketching instructor.; Florence Lonsdale nursed in England during the First World War, and also in Yugoslavia and Serbia until 1920. After marriage to Tom Lonsdale in 1922 and coming to Banff in 1925, she was a member and president of the Red Cross Society for forty-three years and was involved with the Banff Literary and Dramatic Society, Girl Guides, Canadian Club and the Women's Missionary Society.

History / Biographical: The Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies is a trail riding organization based in Calgary, Alberta. The organization was established in 1923 with the support of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The first ride was held in 1924, and annual summer trail rides and pow-wows attracted fifteen hundred members by 1929. Many notable residents of the Bow Valley, including members of the Brewster and Moore families, Catherine Robb and Peter Whyte, and Carl Rungius have participated in trail rides. Support from the Canadian Pacific Railway ended in 1961. As of 2020, the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies remains an active organization. History / Biographical: William O. Field, 1904-1994, of Massachusetts, U.S.A., was a noted geologist with the American Geographical Society and an expert on mountain glaciers of the northern hemisphere. He made trips to the Canadian Rockies with his father, William Osgood Field, during the 1920s even before graduating from Harvard in 1926. William O. Field studied key glaciers in British Columbia and Alberta from 1922 until 1981.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of records created and collected by William O. Field during to glacier study, research and travels in the Canadian Rockies and area.; I. CR files : [Canadian Rockies series], 1919-1989, 110 files and 13 volumes of textual records and ca.275 files of photographs. Textual records include diaries, notebooks and files for 1948, 1949 and 1953. Photographs include ca.5800 prints, ca.325 negatives and 4 photograph albums in annual files for years 1919 to 1927 and 1948, 1949 and 1953.; II. Reports, before 1980.; III. Resources, 1902-1985, consists of photographs, maps and textual volume collected by Field for research use.; IV. Display photographs, 1885-1953.

History / Biographical: William "Bill" Royle (1905-1980) moved to Banff from Lethbridge in 1952 with his mother (Mary Elizabeth) and two young sons (Bernard and Walter), following the death of his wife. William started the business Banff Plumbing and Heating Ltd., which he operated until his death. William and his brother, John J. Royle, were also involved with a laundromat business in Banff. From its inception in 1953, William also worked as director and president of the Banff Park Savings and Credit Union (now Bow Valley Credit Union). In his spare time, William volunteered with the Banff Boy Scouts, as well as St. Mary's Church in Banff, the Seniors' Society and the Alberta Council of the Aging. William's son, Bernard, tragically passed away in a plane crash in 1969 while searching for new heliskiing routes in British Columbia with his friend, John Gow, who survived.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of photographs, published booklets and film reels which belonged to William Royle. Content pertains to the Banff Boy Scouts: local events, including Banff Winter Carnival, Banff Indian Days and Banff's Centennial Parade in 1967; hiking, camping, skiing and other recreational activities; Bernard Royle and friends; the Banff High School curling team; natural views and wildlife in Alberta and British Columbia; and other related subjects. History / Biographical: William Winston (Bill) Mair, 1914-1990, was a wildlife biologist and a Director General of the Canadian Wildlife Service. Mair conducted research in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada in the late 1940s and early 1950s. His MA thesis (The impact of an introduced population of elk upon the biota of Banff National Park), was produced in 1952 at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

Scope & Content: Fonds pertains to wildlife research in Banff National Park; includes wildlife enclosures, Waterfowl Lakes area, Waterfowl Lakes Cabin and Hillsdale Cabin, Bill and Jeanne Mair. Most prints are modern prints made from Mair's negatives; accompanied by letters describing the photographs. Transparencies were made during Mair's research for his BA degree, 1949.
