- Two Japanese blue and white porcelain plates, shaped like shallow bowls on 1.3 cm. high foot. Motif on topside is a dragon in midground on curved lines which suggest a waterfall, and a scroll or spiral on far right. Horizontal lines in varying hues of blues are interrupted by a white pyramid in background suggesting, perhaps, Mt. Fuji. One dragon claw creeps between two of the horizontals, underside of plates have three identical motifs, each of which is four overlapping circles surrounded by curly blue ribbon like lines and bows. Foot is painted in a vertical stripe. Although both plates are from the same pattern, slight difference indicates that they were hand painted.

The five birds are all the same and stylized, head has a distinct comb and is in profile while body is in front view with wings spread open, between the circles are blue and white cloud like scrolls. 10 cm. circle in center is undecorated white. Rim has border of blue cross hatched triangles. At least twenty holes in glaze are evident on topside. Underside is decorated with a delicate curvy blue line, mark on bottom resemble a monogram, framed in a double blue line.

Metal band at base of hilt and metal cap at its end have relief casting of leaves and blossoms, and a bronze casting of blossoms is caught under black cord wrapping handle, oval sword guard has cut out relief of branches and blossoms, with holes on either side large enough to allow dirk to pass through. (b) dirk, long thin blade set into brass handle with cast relief of heron standing in stream with incised bushes around. Japanese calligraphy on other side of handle. - Small round deep-sided decorative ceramic dish with blue and gilded gold stripes around the rim and a picture of a portly bald man wearing purple pants and a green coat with one hand raised in a room with a table, chairs, and windows behind him - printed at the bottom is “MR PICKWICK” and “BANFF” has been written above that in gold ink. A makers mark is stamped on the bottom - online research shows this image was a popular motif with Grimwades in the mid-1900s as Mr Pickwick was the main character of Charles Dickens’ first novel, “The Pickwick Papers.”

Handle of wood with pebbled texture of sharkskin applied and showing through diamond shaped openings left in decorative wrapping with leather strips over handle. Metal cap at end of handle has low relief casting of gilded dragonfly on one corner, a small bronze insect is caught below the leather wrapping on either side of the handle. Rectangular sword guard at hilt has incised design and vestiges of gold painted design with a decorative opening either side. (b) dirk, short narrow blade set into metal handle with inlay of bronze in shape of stem with leaves and two seed pods on one side, fits into slit in top of scabbard. Note: part of inlay missing. (c) scabbard, hollow wood shaped to fit the blade and covered with finely textured brown leather. Slots on either side near hilt are banded at top with smooth black strip, wood?, horn?, and further down as well, where dirk enters. Ornate metal cap at tip extends in a strip 16.0 cm along back edge and 5.0 cm along front edge with narrow metal band around scabbard 10.0 cm from tip. - A flatiron (a) that is resting on a trivet (b).a) The heavy cast iron flatiron is oval with pointed ends. The iron has a semi-circular round wooden handle which detaches from base of iron by pulling a wooden knob at the centre, under the handle, to release a spring (while the heating iron on a hot stove. b) The cast iron trivet is painted black. The trivet is triangular with a cut-out bars and hole design, and there is a short lip along the sides. The bottom of the trivet is marked “J.A.S. Smart Mrg. Co. Li-it-d Canada”.
