Description
In the foreground two mountain climbers are making their way through a series of blue-green ice blocks. To the viewer’s immediate right: the back of a climber, the thigh of his right leg, his bent left leg (in the act of climbing up), his left arm bent at the elbow with his hand resting on his brown ice axe. He is wearing a red down-filled parka with the hood up. The jacket has two badges on the upper left arm; the lower, larger badge is black and white and the upper badge is the Canadian flag in red and white. He is also wearing black mitts, brown ski pants, and on the partial view of his left leg and foot, red gaiters, brown boots with red laces and crampons. Ahead of him to the viewer’s left, another man is in the act of climbing, his body is turning to the left and he appears to be looking off in the distance. He is wearing eye goggles, a blue parka with grey fur around the collar and bottom, a red head cover, grey mitts and red gaiters. His right hand is resting on his ice axe. He appears to be a guide (Sherpa) because of his dark skin. To his right, and directly in front of the first climber and the ice blocks, is a towering serac of blue-green ice. Three of its jagged peaks at the top extend beyond our view. The snow on the viewer’s left is blue and white and there are exposed brown and green, snow-covered rocks to the viewer’s left. The sky above is a very deep blue.

(a) A white helmet with a black border and an insert for skull protection and safety. The insert is white foam covered with ridged teal blue cover, a black leather chin strap with metal buckle, inside plastic headband, clear plastic covering, fabric, criss-cross rigging support with cord and heavy-duty nylon strip suspension to create a space between skull and hardhat. A metal zipper attaching (to three quarters of the insert) earflaps outer black plastic inner lined with red and black corduroy. There is a white fabric tag with “M” in red on the inner grey headband and a gold and black oblong label glued on the front with black lettering on a gold-coloured background “Russell Sporting Goods CALGARY”. Written in black felt pen on the interior of the shell “JAPAN”.(b) The ear flap detachable portion with the other side of the corresponding helmet zipper. Three small rope ladders with metal bars for steps; two ladders are the same type and appear to be handmade:(a) (118.5cm with nylon cord extension 168.0) Three metal bars with thick white nylon rope threaded through the holes in the bars and tied in knots. There is a metal hook (written in scipt “Charlet-Maser”) with a hole in the top and one in the bottom where the rope is looped through. There are remnants of red lettering on the inside the first bar ”ISER AN .032” followed by a star inside a circle.(b) Three metal bars with thick white nylon rope threaded through the holes in the bars and tied in knots. There is a metal hook with a hole in the top through which a thin blue and white nylon cord is looped through and knotted and one in the bottom where white, heavier rope is looped through and then knotted. (c) The third ladder consists of three aluminum bars with white, light nylon rope looped through the holes at either end and tied. Machine engraved on the side of each bar “TRADE, logo, MARK” and underneath “TOP.S. ALPINE EQUIPMENT”.

ALLAIN 1600 Kg” in raised block lettering,“G”, on opposite side in raised lettering, on the other “BREVETTE S G D G”.(b) a metal piton (14.5x3.3cm wide) with the blade, instead of being flat, is positioned slightly sideways; engraved in script on the ‘handle’ portion “Charlet Moser” in block letters “CHAMONIX” . There is a white shop label glued on one side of the blade, in blue lettering “3 7 Premier Cycle & Sports 110 F”.(c) a trowel-shaped vertical piton (11.5x3.0cm), thin flat blade and high raised ‘handle’. This type of knife or blade was very popular in the Rockies. Commonly called the ‘Ace of Spades’. Raised “0” on the blade and “R. CASSIN” on viewer’s right and “ITALY” on the other. an “0” on the top part of the blade. Remnants of a piece of tape “1/74” indiscernable.(d) a hand-forged horizontal piton with a flat blade at one end and raised ‘handle’ at the other with a round hole to put a carabiner through. ‘LOST”, the diamond-shaped logo, “ARROW”.
