History / Biographical
Helen Louise (Fulmer) Wells, 1893-1980, was a long-time resident of Banff, Alberta, Canada. She was the daughter of pioneer Banff residents Minnie Christina Fulmer, 1868-1962, and Walter P. Fulmer, 1863-1948. The family also included another daughter, Alice G. Fulmer, 1896-1989. The Fulmers were very active in local life and recreation and made numerous trips in the Canadian Rockies. In 1927, Helen Fulmer married Fred Wells, 1873-1975. The couple lived in Banff until the death of Fred Wells in 1975 at which time Helen Wells retired to Edmonton. Helen Wells was particularly interested in the history and Banff and area.

Fonds consists of two series consisting of textual records and photographs. Textual records include three scrapbooks which contain clippings, photographs, notes and ephemera dating from 1886 to 1976 and pertain to Banff and area history, Fulmer family, royal family, etc. Remaining textual material includes Fulmer family papers and other material. Photographs, [ca.1880]-1972, pertain to Fulmer family, friends, trips and activities; as well as Banff and area locations, scenery, personalities and events. History / Biographical
Hermann Hagedorn was an American writer who was known for his biographical works, particularly on Theodore Roosevelt, as well as poetry and novels. Late in life, Hagedorn became interested in Moral Rearmament. During a visit to the movement's headquarters on Mackinac Island, Michigan in 1958, he met George McLean (Chief Walking Buffalo of the Stoney Indians), an active proponent and traveller on behalf of Moral Rearmament. Intrigued by McLean's character and philosophy, Hagedorn wrote articles as well as drafts of a biography tentatively titled "A Chief in Two Worlds," but died before the work could be completed.

Rev. Canon Hollingworth Tully Montgomery, 1885-1965, was an Anglican minister at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Montgomery was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick and educated in Atlantic Canada and England. He succeeded his father, Canon Henry Montgomery, as rector of St. George's in the Pines Anglican Church in Banff in 1924, a position which he held until his retirement in 1955. In 1939, he conducted a service for King George VI and Queen Elizabeth during the royal visit to Banff. Montgomery was married to Mary Ruth Montgomery and had two children.

History / Biographical
Hubert Unsworth Green, 1886-1962, was a police officer, naturalist, writer and national park warden at Dauphin, Manitoba and Banff, Alberta, Canada. He was also known by pseudonyms, Cecil Erskine and Tony Lascelles. Green came to Canada in 1905 and served with the Royal North West Mounted Police for twenty-five years. Much of his service was in the vicinity of Riding Mountain National Park, Manitoba, and there he became interested in wildlife research. While living in Dauphin, Green pursued this research, much influenced by Grey Owl. In the late 1930s, Green came to Banff and served as a temporary warden during the war, continuing as a special warden until 1956. He completed numerous wildlife studies of bighorn sheep, wolves, elk, wolverine and moose. In later years, he was engaged in the study of western Canadian history, particularly ranching.

Manuscripts include newspaper and magazine articles on conservation topics, government conservation studies and reports, and historical manuscripts.
Conservation and natural history series consists of four sub-series: A. Flora and fauna, 1927-1962 (prints and negatives, transparencies, other); B. Western Canada, 1927-1962 (Manitoba, Banff National Park); C. People and places, 1927-1962; D. Other, 1927-1962. Series is entirely photographic records pertaining mainly to animal studies by Hubert Green while at Riding Mountain National Park, Manitoba, and Banff National Park. Includes material on beavers, bighorn sheep, elk, moose, cougars, bears and other animals; also animal kills and trapping. Also includes some camping scenes, photographs of Grey Owl and Charles G. D. Roberts and some prints by Burt Gresham.

History / Biographical
Iva (Stewart) Smith , 1894-1975, and Leonard James Smith, 1890-1969, were business operators at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Iva Stewart and her mother Zaidee Stewart, 1875-1962, came to Banff as visitors in 1913 and decided to stay. Iva operated the Canadian Pacific Railway station news stand from 1914 until ca.1924. She married Len Smith in 1922.
After working at various other CPR facilities, including Lake Louise Chalet in the 1920s and Wapta Bungalow Camp, ca.1931, Iva Smith became manager of Becker's Bungalows on Tunnel Mountain in Banff, ca.1935 Len Smith worked at the Bow River boat house and was Captain of the "Lake Minnewanka" for over thirty years. He was also an ice-maker at Edmonton, Calgary, Lethbridge and Banff, Alberta for forty-five years. Zaidee M. Stewart worked at the boat operation tea house and wrote poetry, publishing "Banff Holiday" in 1950.

John (Jack) Hewiston Hayes, 1921-1993, was a ski instructor, soldier and businessman at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Hayes came to Banff from England as a small child. In 1936 he worked for Brewster Transport as a pony boy and became a driver in 1939. In 1941, he joined the Royal Air Force, Squadron 254, training in Canada at Claresholm, Alberta and elsewhere. Beginning July 1943, Hayes served on over 50 flying missions oversees and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in May 1944. After the war he resumed his career with Brewster Transport, eventually becoming President. In 1978 he went into business with the purchase of the Jasper Sky Tram. Hayes retired in 1980.

John (Jack) Green Mitchell was a taxidermist at Calgary and Banff, Alberta, Canada. Mitchell prepared specimens for Norman K. Luxton in Banff, and for MacKay and Dippie in Calgary and Banff. During the 1930s, Mitchell worked at the Government Museum in Banff and assumed the curator's duties there following the retirement of Norman Sanson.
