Title: Drop-Front Desk

Description: A four-drawer secretary desk with drop front hinged and two pull-out supports for lowered front. All hardware in good condition. Governor Winthrop style. Interior of desk back has cubbyholes and two deep, narrow slot drawers. Also a hidden drawer centre top. Secret drawer has a letter inside from Catharine's mother dated October 7, 1938, part of it reads: "I am going to find out about the age of the desk 150 years anyway & most likely older. My father bought it 60 years ago, from the old Derby house in Salem, where Lafayette stayed & the desk was old then." Letter now in Archives M36/164.

Description: A shaped wooden box with a hinged veneered cover. The box rests on small ball feet. The lid is bevelled to accommodate varying heights of knives. There is a keyhole at the front, near the top, of the box (key missing). A small sterling silver plaque beneath the keyhole is monogrammed “E.L.”.

Title: Inkstand

Date: 1810 – 1815

Material: glass; metal

Dimensions: 8.3 x 5.9 x 14.9 cm

Description: Ink set contained in a round top, trunk shaped container which sits on four, corner ball feet. Rounded top has round knob and is hinged for opening. Either end of container has relief lion's head with rotating ring through jaw. Bottom of box scratched "#251 MT ac", also stamped lion profile hallmark and "7". Interior of box is two chambers divided by flat sterling bar. In either chamber sits a bevelled, square sided glass. Each container has circular, ridged top with 1.0 cm. hole in centre. One of sterling tops is anchored permanently to glass well and has white powder residue inside it, other top is removable and is presumably for holding ink. Card inside box says "Old Sheffield Ink Box made in London. Circa 1810-1815."

Dimensions: 10.0 x 54.0 cm

Description: A long narrow fabric strip with seven pockets formed along its length. Each pocket is made of neatly handsewn pieces of differently patterned silk swatches, with the bottom pocket made of velvet. The outside of the case is covered with linen canvas covered completely with very fine cross-stitch designs of the alphabet at the top and patterned bands of flowers with a tree, bird, cat, and dog, and the initials 'ML' at the centre in traditional needlepoint sampler manner. The edges of the case have been bound with turqoise silk ribbon. There is a two-layered semicircular black wool flap at the bottom, and an arched silk-lined red velvet flap at the top.

Description: A tall varnished dark brown wooden box with heavy hinged lid sloping downward in front. Front of box is ornately shaped and bevelled with metal keyhole plaque on flat surface just below lid, and small hinged ring attached to metal back just above on lid. Exterior of box completely covered with veneer with marquetry of lighter veneer along edges of lid on top and outlining bevelled joints on front of box. Inside of lid parqueted with six pointed star inside oval of lighter and darker woods. Bent metal pin on lid fits into lock chamber when closed, insides have been removed.
