Upper triangle, 6.4 x 2.5 cm. is inlaid with thin strips of black set diagonally in both directions. The lower triangle, 3.5 x 3.0 cm, is inlaid with twelve light and black wood triangles. A narrow vertical rectangle, 3.2 x .9 cm. of light wood interrupted by thin horizontal strips of black is set to the left of the lower triangle. The four corner support posts are attached to base by small wooden pegs which are visible on bottom.

- A long narrow fabric strip with seven pockets formed along its length. Each pocket is made of neatly handsewn pieces of differently patterned silk swatches, with the bottom pocket made of velvet. The outside of the case is covered with linen canvas covered completely with very fine cross-stitch designs of the alphabet at the top and patterned bands of flowers with a tree, bird, cat, and dog, and the initials 'ML' at the centre in traditional needlepoint sampler manner. The edges of the case have been bound with turqoise silk ribbon. There is a two-layered semicircular black wool flap at the bottom, and an arched silk-lined red velvet flap at the top.

- A needlepoint sampler, in many colours, done in cross-stitch on loosely woven ecru linen. The sampler has a double-stitched border with stitched bars between each row of letters (A-Z) beginning with capital letters, followed by numerals from 1 to 10, then lower case letters (a-z), then numerals from 1 to 6, then large capital letters (A-F), and ending with “Serena Matilda Potts 1822.” The piece was originally framed in a simple brown wood frame with a parallel line (wood grain?) texture. The paper backing has “Serena Potts’ work born 1812” handwritten and a “Royal Picture Gallery” (Calgary, Alberta) framer’s sticker.

Tall looped handle of metal tapers at ends into lugs on shoulder of pot above spout and on opposite side. Surface beginning 3 cm above rough metal of bottom has been polished and etched with a flock of butterflies inlaid with gold, and a similarly worked gold chrysanthemum on each face of the hexagonal lip. Simple flat round bronze lid with plain hollow metal knob screwed into centre on a bed of simple leaves. Inside texture of roughly cast iron; handle contains inlaid butterfly motif.
