History / Biographical: George "Lucky" Skirrow, b.1925, was a boatman at Lake Minnewanka in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. Skirrow worked for Allen Mather, ca.1948-1951, operating tour boats on the Bow River and at Lake Minnewanka. He then purchased the Lake Minnewanka business and operated it until 1977. Skirrow retired to Victoria, British Columbia.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists mainly of photographs pertaining primarily to the boat launch, boats and boating at Lake Minnewanka; also, Lake Minnewanka and area, Lake Minnewanka Power Development and Lucky Skirrow. Includes set of aerial views of Lake Minnewanka and area produced by the Department of National Defense, pre-1940. History / Biographical: George Noble, 1879-1965, was a professional photographer at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Noble was born in Woolwich, England where he apprenticed as a photographer. He came to Banff in 1909 to operate a photographic business for his uncles, George and Bill Fear, who owned a curio business. In 1919, Noble bought the photographic business and, in 1932, acquired the remainder of the Fear Brothers business. He built a new studio and shop, which offered portraiture, photo- finishing and framing services and sold photographic supplies, camera equipment and English china. In addition to portraiture, George Noble and employees, such as photographer Bill Jamieson, produced a wide range of documentary, scenic and commercial views. Noble's shop offered black and white and hand-coloured prints of local events and Rocky Mountain views. George Noble was an active member of the community, serving on both the Banff School Board and the Banff Board of Trade for many years. Upon his retirement in 1957, his business was acquired by a group of investors which included Bill Jamieson, lab-technician and photographer for the Noble business from 1936 to 1957

Also includes some views know to have been produced by Fred Armbrister, a professional photographer who operated out of Lake Louise, Alberta, ca.1930.; IV. Portraits, ca.4600. This series contains four groups: A. 1920s-1950s, most unidentified; B. 1930s and 1940s, arranged alphabetically, many unidentified; C. 1950s, arranged alphabetically, most identified, many with proofs (prints); D. 1950s, arranged chronologically by job number.; V. History / Biographical: George Harrison Paris, 1872-1960, was a barber and amateur photographer at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Paris was born in London, England and came to the Rocky Mountains on the Canadian Pacific Railway, ca.1889. He settled in Banff in 1892, working first as an attendant at Dr. R. G. Brett's Grandview Hotel bathhouse. There he learned the barber trade from a patron, and by 1903 had established his own barber shop. Also in 1903, Paris married Ida Winberg and the couple opened a summer tea house and ice cream parlor on Banff Avenue. In 1922, a restaurant was added to the Paris Tea Room. George Paris was active in both the Banff Curling Club and the Banff Skating Club and taught figure- skating. George and Ida Paris had four children - Cyril, Georgina (Georgie) and twins, Herb and Ted

History / Biographical: Lieutenant-Colonel Gerald Smedley Andrews, b.1903-, was Surveyor General and Director of Surveys and Mapping for British Columbia from 1951-1968. In retirement, Andrews has written, lectured and travelled.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of reminiscences, lecture and correspondence pertaining to Andrews' activities and interests in the Canadian Rockies. Reminiscence is titled: Beyond those rugged mountains by Gerry Andrews 1987: about his summer jobs at Field, British Columbia, 1919 Part I & 1921, Part II. History / Biographical: John Hartefeld was born Johann Hartefeld in 1915 in Stettin, Poland (Germany). He studied physical education and manual arts from 1930 to 1933 and taught at a boys school in Berlin-Spandau from 1939 to 1945. Hartefeld moved to Garmish Partenkirchen, Germany where he worked as a ski instructor, sports teacher and faltboat (watercraft) instructor and guide.; Gertrud Vinzenzia Sattler was born in 1920 in Wilkischen, Czechoslovakia and attended business college and language school in Prague, earning a certificate as a bilingual secretary in English and German. From 1945 to 1953 Gertrud Sattler worked for the U.S. Army in Garmish Partenkirchen as a secretary, bookkeeper and interpreter. She met John Hartefeld in Garmish Partenkirchen and together they immigrated to Canada in 1953 and settled in Toronto, Ontario.; Gertie and John married in Toronto in 1953 and moved to Banff, Alberta settling at 213 Bear Street. In 1963, John and Gertie moved into their new home at 340 Muskrat Street, a house built by John. John Hartefeld earned his Alberta Journeyman's Certificate in Carpentry in 1958 and completed his B.Ed in Industrial Arts in the Faculty of Education in 1966 by attending summer schools and through correspondence courses with Queen's University and the University of Calgary. He taught at the Banff High School from 1957 to 1979 and was instrumental in designing and assembling the industrial arts shop at the Banff High School in 1962. John Hartefeld gave ski lessons to school-age students at Mount Norquay and he designed and built the wrought iron chandeliers and wall lamps in his home and also at the Bugaboo, Cariboo, and Bobbie Burns lodges. John enjoyed fishing, windsurfing, and building his own windsurfing boards for sailing at Vermillion Lakes. John Hartefeld died in a bicycle accident on Norquay Road in June 1997.; From 1953 to 1959 Gertie worked for J.D. Hansen of Banff doing insurance, real estate and legal work. From 1959 to 1964 Gertie worked for Dermod Owen-Flood, Barristers and Solicitors as a legal secretary and bookkeeper and from 1963 to 1966 she worked for Nesbitt, Beaumont et al. Barristers and Solicitors. Gertie provided secretarial and bookkeeping services for Rocky Mountain Guides (now CMH) from 1966 to 1968 and from 1962 to 1975, she worked as an insurance and real estate agent and was an officer of Banff Insurance Services Ltd. In 1975, Gertie became an insurance consultant for CMH. Gertie Hartefeld enjoyed skiing, fishing, cooking, and tennis. She was an accomplished weaver and a member of the Harvie Heights Weavers Guild. Her garments could be purchased at The Quest in Banff. Gertie Hartefeld died in 2002.

History / Biographical: Gray Campbell, b.1912, was a Royal Canadian Mounted Police constable, rancher, writer and publisher at Banff and Cowley, Alberta and Sidney, British Columbia, Canada. Campbell served with the RCMP in Banff and Cowley districts from 1932 until 1939. He ranched in the Porcupine Hills area, ca.1948-1960, at the same time writing magazine articles on a number of subjects, including RCMP history.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of manuscripts and research papers, 196-; police papers, 1932-1935; correspondence, 1937-1957; publications, 1933-1942; Hal B. Hammond papers and photographs, 1887-1888, 1938, n.d.; and research and personal photographs, 1887-ca.1937.; Police papers are primarily reports, statements and news articles concerning a RCMP case involving the murder of four police officers and the deaths of three fugitives near Banff in 1935. They discuss the roles of Campbell, Bill Neish, Tom Wallace and George C. "Scotty" Harrison. History / Biographical: Helen and George Shandruk were residents of Banff, Alberta, Canada. Helen Isabel (Isobella) Stuart, 1899-2000, came to Banff from Scotland in 1911? with her parents, David Stuart, 1863-1919, and Isobella Stuart, 1872-1945, and sister Caroline "Carrie" (Crandell). The family resided at 119 Beaver Street, where Helen lived until 1995. Helen worked at the Banff Post Office, also at the Sign of the Goat and the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies. George Shandruk, 1914-1993, was born at Bankhead, Alberta and raised at Canmore, Alberta. He worked for many years as a fishing guide. Helen and George married in 1948.

History / Biographical: Helen Louise (Fulmer) Wells, 1893-1980, was a long-time resident of Banff, Alberta, Canada. She was the daughter of pioneer Banff residents Minnie Christina Fulmer, 1868-1962, and Walter P. Fulmer, 1863-1948. The family also included another daughter, Alice G. Fulmer, 1896-1989. The Fulmers were very active in local life and recreation and made numerous trips in the Canadian Rockies. In 1927, Helen Fulmer married Fred Wells, 1873-1975. The couple lived in Banff until the death of Fred Wells in 1975 at which time Helen Wells retired to Edmonton. Helen Wells was particularly interested in the history and Banff and area.

History / Biographical: Rev. Canon Hollingworth Tully Montgomery, 1885-1965, was an Anglican minister at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Montgomery was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick and educated in Atlantic Canada and England. He succeeded his father, Canon Henry Montgomery, as rector of St. George's in the Pines Anglican Church in Banff in 1924, a position which he held until his retirement in 1955. In 1939, he conducted a service for King George VI and Queen Elizabeth during the royal visit to Banff. Montgomery was married to Mary Ruth Montgomery and had two children.

History / Biographical: Hubert Unsworth Green, 1886-1962, was a police officer, naturalist, writer and national park warden at Dauphin, Manitoba and Banff, Alberta, Canada. He was also known by pseudonyms, Cecil Erskine and Tony Lascelles. Green came to Canada in 1905 and served with the Royal North West Mounted Police for twenty-five years. Much of his service was in the vicinity of Riding Mountain National Park, Manitoba, and there he became interested in wildlife research. While living in Dauphin, Green pursued this research, much influenced by Grey Owl. In the late 1930s, Green came to Banff and served as a temporary warden during the war, continuing as a special warden until 1956. He completed numerous wildlife studies of bighorn sheep, wolves, elk, wolverine and moose. In later years, he was engaged in the study of western Canadian history, particularly ranching.

History / Biographical: Iva (Stewart) Smith , 1894-1975, and Leonard James Smith, 1890-1969, were business operators at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Iva Stewart and her mother Zaidee Stewart, 1875-1962, came to Banff as visitors in 1913 and decided to stay. Iva operated the Canadian Pacific Railway station news stand from 1914 until ca.1924. She married Len Smith in 1922.; After working at various other CPR facilities, including Lake Louise Chalet in the 1920s and Wapta Bungalow Camp, ca.1931, Iva Smith became manager of Becker's Bungalows on Tunnel Mountain in Banff, ca.1935 Len Smith worked at the Bow River boat house and was Captain of the "Lake Minnewanka" for over thirty years. He was also an ice-maker at Edmonton, Calgary, Lethbridge and Banff, Alberta for forty-five years. Zaidee M. Stewart worked at the boat operation tea house and wrote poetry, publishing "Banff Holiday" in 1950.

History / Biographical: J. Monroe "Roy" Thorington, 1894-1989, was an ophthalmologist, mountaineer and mountain historian at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Thorington was a pre-eminent climber and explorer in the Canadian Rockies starting in 1922. He studied the Freshfield and Lyell Glaciers for 22 years and explored and mapped the Purcell Range, British Columbia. Thorington wrote approximately 300 publications on mountaineering, mountain history and the Canadian Rockies. He was active in numerous organizations, particularly the American Alpine Club.
