Long green ribbon ties at front of neck. Additional long grey ribbon attached to brim higher on face. Inside back is reinforced with burlap on which is glued brown paper. Written in Mary Schaffer’s hand: “18 S.M. Potts 1832 Calasche”. On back, ribbon is tied in bow. Green fabric stitched on back to cover neck.

Description
A very fine burnt orange and black silk chemise style dress encrusted with gold ruching and embroidery. Dress has short sleeves, a rounded neck opening to the collarbones slightly gathered on each side, and falls straight from the underarms to the hem. Dress is burnt orange above hips in front, black below hips and entirely in back, with burnt orange sleeves having wide black bands at the end. A narrow, 3.2 cm, black streamer ribbon hangs from the centre of neck in back, folded to three different lengths, sides of skirt are slit open to hips with material pleated to conceal the slit, with a detail of five burnt orange covered buttons in a row at the top of the pleat. The edges of the bodice are heavily encrusted with narrow gold ribbon rucking, interspersed with thick gold and blue silk embroidery, and accented with burnt orange beads scattered about.
