On the underside of the box are the marks “Fred Carey June 15 - 95” and “1898 New York” in pencil, and the name of Carey is written on the bottom seven times in different styles.

Inside lid and inside bottom has line scribed in a set-in border following the octagonal shape of the outside of box. Top of lid has large, scroll, embossed and gilt medallion at centre. Embossed, gold designs following same motif repeated three times on each side, once on the bottom, again on the side of the lid, and again on the bevel of the lid. A small, circular motif is on each corner between.
