- History / Biographical
- Hans Gmoser played a major role in creating Canada’s vibrant mountain community. Although known internationally as the father of heli-skiing, he was much more than that: a talented rock climber, tireless expedition leader, a mountain guide, film maker and organizer. Deep Powder and Steep Rock presents an intimate portrait of this charismatic man. Much of the story is told in Gmoser’s own words, gleaned from his diaries, expedition journals, film commentaries and personal correspondence. It is a unique tale of adventure, hard work, perseverance and ultimate success.

Consists of scenic, documentary and commercial views similar to material in previous series. Includes views know to have been produced by Fred Armbrister, a professional photographer who operated out of Lake Louise, Alberta, ca.1930. -- Title based on accession records and contents of series. -- Material was acquired in 1967, probably without original envelopes and with no logical arrangement. It was attributed at that time to Fred Armbrister, but subsequent investigation indicated that, with the exception of nineteen large-format views and possible exception of some Lake Louise area scenic views, the material is probably George Noble's. Negatives in this series were arranged during collection processing in 1988 to bring like material together. -- Arrangement outline available in printed form; file-level inventory available through this database; selected contact prints available in visual reference file.
