A purple leather jewellery box with large brass latch plate on top. Lid split across middle and hinged at long sides to fold out and hang at sides of box like a tray. Latch releases by moving bar beneath keyholes and lifting lid with leather tab by plate. Lid lined with purple rep satin. Shallow (2.2 cm) tray fits flush inside box, resting on small ledges. Sides of tray and box arced along top of side edges. Tray lined with purple velvet and divided into three compartments, the two narrow side ones contoured with slit down middle. Large, square, central compartment holds removable velvet pillow. Tray lifts with leather tabs each side. Box beneath lined on bottom with velvet. Marks: stamped into latch, "Rd.No 474529", stamped in gold on edge of box, "registered 2(?)943140(?)5(?)" Brass key (2.5 x 1.3) - small; D-shaped ring at handle; short round shaft with small lug at hollow end to fit lock; tag attached, "Nelas jewelry box".

Description
A light brown, grained leather, rectangular, jewellery box with strap handle on top, and square latch plate on front. Initials "C.R." embossed in gold on top of lid. Large, rectangular, brass plate on front with keyhole (key missing), and vertical levers on each side which pinch together to release latch. Lid swings up and is hinged along back. Interior divided into three compartments, the outer two having shallow trays at the top which lift and swing over to the sides on brass hinges. Each tray divided into three sections, the central one narrow and built up with lining fabric to form a deep slot down its length. Lined with moire in the lid, and beige velvet inside all compartments. Embossed in gold on base: trade mark containing eagle’s head (?) and “mark/Cross/England”

Box and tray completely lined with dark red moire rep fabric. Top edges of tray and inside lip of box trimmed near the bottom, and on either side of the lid opening. Top trimmed with gold lines forming frame around scroll and shell design inside. Bottom of box and tray of darker red leather.

Relief pattern on cast legs which are bent slightly at top where they attach to box. Stamped into side of box: “R.W.F. Ltd.” and three hallmarks. Two hallmarks stamped on lid.
