The grass about the trees and in the valley is a yellow-green with touches of ochre, orange-red and grey-green. In the middleground, to the left of centre, zigzags a river (whose banks are defined by lines of brown and white). A forest of dark brown and dark green surrounds the river on the left and from behind. The background is an undefined area of green, indicating the base of the mountains lining the valley.

In the background is a wide valley with a large glacier. The glacier (coloured with white, grey, light blue and light brown) fills most of the lefthand side. The righthand side of the background contains a mass of dark grey and brown cliffs (with touches of grey-blue and ochre). Along the upper edge of the picture (above the glacier) are loose brushstrokes of blue, white, brown and blue-grey. These marks suggest distant cliffs among ice and clouds.

In the left foreground a tall tree frames the picture. Some grey stokes indicate dead branches about the base of the tree. The lake in the middleground has the reflection of the larger mountain, in slightly lighter tones than those found on the mountain. The reflections of trees, mountains and sky have been lightly sketched on the river's surface, with much of the pale beige ground showing through the paint. The river's banks have been outlined in black. A tall group of dark evergreens is located on the righthand bank, near the picture's centre; while a staggered row of trees can be seen in the distance on the left bank. The trees on the left bank are simply indicated by thin vertical brushstrokes of dark green paint. In the background a range of violet mountains can be seen. The mountains appear to recede into the distance since their details are blended rather than distinct.

Behind the bridge is a forest of evergreens with black and brown shadows. The background trees by the right end of the bridge are coloured with deep blue. On the right, beyond a gap in the trees, part of a peak can be seen (painted with light browns, violet-grey and dark grey). Above the peak, in the light blue sky, two oblong clouds have been roughly sketched in.

- Description
- View of Lake McArthur, looking east. (There is less applied paint than on the majority of Catharine Whyte's oil sketches.) In the lower right corner is the edge of a cliff of rock. The middleground contains the large bright blue surface of the lake. Half the lake's surface has long horizontal strokes of light blue, while reflections are described with short vertical strokes of tan, green and darker blue. On the left-hand side of the composition are tan-coloured slopes that come down to the water's edge. The right background contains a wall of violet-grey and blue-grey rock. In the left background can be seen the lower slopes of Mount McArthur coloured brown, and partially in shadow. An unfinished patch of blue sky appears at the top of the picture.
