Description
A rectangular wooden, possibly mahogany veneer, box with a hinged lid. There is an inlaid mother of pearl floral rose design on top of the lid and diamond patterned inlay on the edges. A mother of pearl name plate is centred on the top of the lid. The box has a brass lock and other wire inlay. On the underside of the box are the marks “Fred Carey June 15 - 95” and “1898 New York” in pencil, and the name of Carey is written on the bottom seven times in different styles.

Lid fits almost entirely over depth of box and is shaped into rounded scallop shape on either side, to leave opening for two circular brass pulls /handles on either side of box itself. With exception of brass handles, box entirely black lacquer. Lacquer has minor chips along base of box and along lid edging.
