- A Chinese gold scale (a) and case (b). a) A scale with a long thin rod made from gibbon bone with a scale marked along its length with small dots. A brass pan is suspended by a black thread through a hole at the blunt end of the rod. There is a single thread at 9.5 cm from the blunt end that acts as a fulcrum to hang the rod. b) A violin-shaped case made of carved bamboo that is hinged with brass at the end of the stem. A braided rattan ring slides down the stem to secure it when closed. There are carved areas insidethe case to fit the pan, rod and weight. The case is marked with a symbol carved into the outside. There is also a red and white paper inside with Chinese characters and “Ex.B Harry Sam” handwritten.

(b) single pearl, 2.4x .5 x .4 , small rounded tapered ellipse of gold with tiny seed pearl , .2 cm dia set into bevelled hole at centre, hollow. Stamped on back "14k" and torch hallmark. (c) same as (b) without pearl, 1.9 x .4 x .2, die struck. Hook clasp has double legs but joined by its curve into single hook. Period 1890 - 1915. (d) same as (c) but flat with border, 2.0 x .4 x .3, plain with small, gold, 14k, machine stamped, bead edging completely around outside. - A basket hat with natural light with black and red brown design. Zig-zag design around sides formed of elongated trapazoidal forms stepping up and down on one another with a triangle at the base and top of each zig-zag, trapezoids are brown on bottom half, black across top. Rim of hat is banded with brown bars and brown and black line beneath. Bottom has band of black and brown surrounding a series of brown parallelograms forming a circle. Centre of base is a circle of lighter brown. The hat is a twining technique over ribs radiating from the centre with extra ribs added to expand the shape, design not visible on inside but mottled pattern in reverse of outer pattern is vaguely seen against the brown interior.
