- The Alpine Club of Canada, the national mountaineering club, was co-founded in 1906 by A. O. Wheeler and Elizabeth Parker, and other like-minded climbers. The club espoused scientific study and exploration, cultivation of art, public education, acquisition of climbing skills, and preservation of natural areas within the mountainous regions of Canada. Through a national executive, local sections and volunteer committees, the club provided climbing camps, clubhouse, huts, and publications, including the Canadian Alpine Journal. ACC expeditions and projects resulted in pioneer exploration, first ascents, and included mountain warfare training during the Second World War. In recent years, the club's membership has increased dramatically with the popularity of climbing and its programs have evolved to serve the needs of unguided climbers using sophisticated technical aids.

- History / Biographical
- Andy Russell, 1915-2005, was a trapper, guide and outfitter, writer, photographer, cinematographer, lecturer and environmental advocate in the Pincher Creek, Alberta, Canada.
- Russell was born in Lethbridge, Alberta and spent his childhood on a ranch in the foothills near Pincher Creek. He became a skilled horseman, hunter, fisherman and trapper, and, in 1936, was employed by Bert Riggall, a pioneer guide and outfitter of wilderness pack trips in the southern Rockies since 1907. He became Riggall's partner in 1939 and took over the business when Riggall retired in 1946. Andy Russell and Kathleen (Kay) Riggall married in 1938 and raised five children at their ranch bordering Waterton Lakes National Park, where family businesses included guiding, saddlehorses and ranching. Children are: Richard "Dick" H. (b.1938); Andrew Charles "Charlie" (b.1941); Harold John "John" (b.1944); Hugh Gordon Riggall "Gordon" (b.1947); Lorenda Anne "Anne" (b.1952).
- Russell continued as a renowned guide and outfitter with a wealthy repeat clientele until he was forced out of guiding by 1960 with the advance of the oil industry concerns upon wilderness areas in southern Alberta and British Columbia. Russell began to write nature articles in 1945 and after 1960 concentrated upon writing, photography, film making, lecturing and ranching. He wrote for numerous magazines and newspapers, produced radio broadcasts, and, using colour motion picture photography, developed programs on wildlife and wilderness habitat research for live public performances. Russell's films launched his career as an author of popular wildlife and mountain culture books, which included Grizzly Country. In later years, he was an active writer, consultant and advocate of wilderness and environmental management and received numerous awards and honours, including Member of the Order of Canada.

- The Banff Recreational Centre at Banff, Alberta, Canada was built during the 1960s following discussions beginning in 1954 and continuing during the late 1950s. By 1958, an organizational committee had the commitment that a civic centre would be funded jointly by the federal government and the community. The centre was to include curling rinks, a skating rink and a public library. Efforts to obtain the 1968 Winter Olympic Games for Banff and area influenced plans and negotiations. With the aid of a provincial grant, the community raised part of the funding. Federal funding took the form of a loan, which the organizers found difficult to pay back. The final recreational centre was built in several stages. The curling rink opened for curling and limited skating in 1962 and construction of a skating rink began in 1968.
- Scope & Content
- Fonds contains correspondence, minutes, plans, reports, legal and financial records of committees and officers involved in planning, building, financing and operation of the Banff Recreational Centre. - James Henry (Harry) McKid Bannerman - Born in Calgary on September 7, 1890. He resided in Calgary and trained in heating, plumbing and tinsmithing. He belonged to the United Association of Plumbers and Pipe Fitters. He married Clara Haugan (born in Norway in 1890) in 1918. They had two girls, Ethel in 1919, Marjory 1921 before moving to Banff in 1923. Three more children arrived, Rundle 1924, Daphnie 1930 and Joyce in 1932. He carried on his trade in his shop on Bear Street. He had great machinery for making heating ducts, down spouts, elbows and eaves troughing out of tin. He also worked with copper sheeting for kettles, pots, wash tubs, coal scuttles, bath tubs, and a church spire. He crawled under homes to fix leaks and kept things moving. Harry was a volunteer fireman for twenty odd years. When he retired because of poor health the fire department gave him a beautiful recliner chair. He also served on the town council for many years, the last few as chairman. He retired in 1949. Harry was a member of the Southern Alberta and Oldtimers Associations and the Independent Order of Oddfellows. He was a staunch conservative and his sister Reta Crick was a staunch liberal. His son Rundle predeceased him in 1948 and his wife Clara in 1949. Harry passed away June 15, 1950.
- Joseph McKay Bannerman - Born 1851, came to Calgary in 1883. He served on city council then served four years as representative for Calgary in the Northwest Territories Legislature Assembly. Joseph and his wife Christina (born 1857) have their names moulded on the archway at the Southern Alberta Pioneers Memorial Building. Christina passed away in 1907 and in 1908 Joseph moved to Banff. He found work in town and later remarried. They had two girls, Evelyn and Thelma Mary and lived on the corner of Otter and Buffalo Street across from the cemetary. Joseph died in 1932 and Emma went back to England.
