Following his retirement he accepted a contract from the Director of the National Parks Service to compile a difinitive history of national park development in Canada, which he completed in 1981.

- File consists of 1 photographic portrait of Fergus Lothian taken by a member of his staff in July 1978 in Ottawa. The photo is signed by Lothian and dated in the bottom right corner. Also includes a handwritten note by Jim Sime outlining details of the photograph; Lothian gave the photo to Sime at the National and Provincial Party Association gathering on 11 October 1978. Lothian was being presented the J.B. Harkin Medal in recoginition of his service and contribution to national park administration.

- The photograph and note were accompanied by an envelope that had the same details as the note written on the front; the envelope was discarded.
