The foreground of the piece is comprised of many loose rocks that are piled on top of one another and recede into the background. The line quality of the drawing in the foreground is much heavier and more detailed than the background. Shading in the piece is done mostly with cross-hatching.

This mountain or foothill has a since of being of a high elevation, through which another mountain range can be seen in the close distance as the foreground dips in the center. In the background, above the trees, is a mountain which takes up half of the piece. The right side of the mountain is in shadow. The sky is painted with a light blue wash, and is occupied with light clouds. Where the sky meets the mat at the top of the piece, a small piece of sky pokes through the clouds and is cropped by the mat.
