History / Biographical
Sunshine Village Corporation operates a ski resort business near Banff, Alberta. The resort was first developed by Brewster Transport Company, and the ski lodge and surrounding area were expanded considerably by Cliff and Bev White during their years as owners and operators, 1960-1977.

Fonds includes miscellaneous records of present company and predecessors, including guest register, 1936-1965; building maintenance manuals, 1958; plans for new Sunshine Village Lodge, 1965; miscellaneous letters from visitors, 1963-1976; ski patrol volunteer registers, 1974-1977; and plans for leaseholds, buildings, lifts, runs, tows, etc., 1939-1981.

History / Biographical
Sydney R. Vallance, 1891-1979, was a lawyer and mountaineer at Calgary and Banff, Alberta, Canada. Vallance began his law career in 1920, establishing a private practice in 1929. He joined the Alpine Club of Canada in 1932 and held executive positions at both the section and national levels, including a term as President from 1947 to 1950. He made over one hundred ascents during his climbing career. Vallance was also a member of the Skyline Trail Hikers of the Canadian Rockies and was an avid amateur photographer

Fonds consists of personal papers, photographs and sound recordings of Sydney Vallance pertaining mainly to the Canadian Rockies and Vallance's mountaineering career.
Textual records include manuscripts pertaining to personalities of the Canadian Rockies and to slide presentations on the Banff, Lake Louise, Lake O'Hara and Jasper regions; correspondence files arising from Vallance's positions as Vice President and Hut Committee Chairman of the Alpine Club of Canada, 1945-1946, and as member and President of the Lake O'Hara Trails Club, 1958-1962; miscellaneous correspondence on mountaineering, glacier study, expeditions, packers and outfitters, naming of five peaks in the Mt. Lyell massive after Swiss guides, 1920-1972. Correspondents include Sydney Baker, Eric Brooks, F. V. Longstaff, J. Monroe Thorington and Don Munday. Includes holograph map of the Great Divide region.
Photographs are mainly landscape views of the Rocky Mountains by Sydney Vallance. Some views include climbing companions; also Banff scenes including hermit at Johnson Lake, Sunshine ski area, and some prints collected by Vallance.
Sound recording contains commentaries for slide shows titled Banff, Lake Louise, Moraine and O'Hara; Banff and Vicinity; and Jasper Highway

History / Biographical
William O. Field, 1904-1994, of Massachusetts, U.S.A., was a noted geologist with the American Geographical Society and an expert on mountain glaciers of the northern hemisphere. He made trips to the Canadian Rockies with his father, William Osgood Field, during the 1920s even before graduating from Harvard in 1926. William O. Field studied key glaciers in British Columbia and Alberta from 1922 until 1981.

Fonds consists of records created and collected by William O. Field during to glacier study, research and travels in the Canadian Rockies and area.
I. CR files : [Canadian Rockies series], 1919-1989, 110 files and 13 volumes of textual records and ca.275 files of photographs. Textual records include diaries, notebooks and files for 1948, 1949 and 1953. Photographs include ca.5800 prints, ca.325 negatives and 4 photograph albums in annual files for years 1919 to 1927 and 1948, 1949 and 1953.
II. Reports, before 1980.
III. Resources, 1902-1985, consists of photographs, maps and textual volume collected by Field for research use.
