History / Biographical: Bruno Engler, 1915-2001, was a mountain guide, ski instructor, photographer and film maker at Banff and Canmore, Alberta, Canada. Engler arrived from Switzerland in 1939 and initially worked as a mountain guide and ski instructor for the Canadian Pacific Railway, Sunshine ski area and for Deer Lodge at Lake Louise, Alberta. During the Second World War, he served as a mountain warfare instructor for the Canadian Army. Following the war, Engler worked as a free-lance photographer for the National Film Board and others; as coach of the University of Alberta Ski Team; and as a technical advisor, cameraman and actor for numerous movies made in the Banff area. Throughout his career, Engler worked as a still and motion picture photographer, both for the movie industry and for governments at all levels, as well as operating his own business, Alpine Films of Banff, Alberta.

Scope & Content: Fonds is primarily a broad-ranging commercial negative collection pertaining to Banff and area, including businesses, buildings, projects, events, people and scenic views; skiing, mountain travel and recreation; Sunshine Village Ski Area; warden activities in the mountain parks; national and provincial parks; scenic views of western Canada, particularly mountain landscapes; some portraits and candid shots of local and international personalities. Photographs pertaining to film making include helicopter rescue; highway construction; Norquay, Sunshine, and Lake Louise ski areas' histories; Banff events and buildings; Canmore events and buildings; professional and amateur ski races; scenic mountain and wildlife; mountaineering and highway accidents; mountain guiding trips including Pierre Trudeau, Roland Michener and Peter Lougheed. Fonds consists of four series: Photography, Motion Pictures, Sound Recordings, and Textual records. Photography series consists of four sub-series established by the photographer: I. The Maycroft Ski Meet was an annual community event held on a hill near the Oldman River that operated as part of carnival events that tied with the crowning of a Carnival Queen at the Banff Winter Carnival. Participants were towed up the hill with a rope tow operated by a tractor. The Meets were eventually phased out following the openin of the (then named) West Castle Mountain Ski Hill in 1965.

History / Biographical: "Far Country," 1954, directed by Anthony Mann and starring James Stewart, Ruth Roman, Corinne Calvet, and Walter Brennan. A Wyoming cowboy drives a herd of cattle from Skagway, Alaska, to the Klondike hoping to make a profit selling to beef-starved miners in Dawson City, Yukon. But he is bedeviled by a corrupt Skagway sheriff-judge and his gang. After his partner is killed on their gold claim, the cowboy takes the law into his own hands. Location filming for all mountain scenes filmed in Jasper National Park (Athabasca Glacier, Mount Edith Cavell). Bruno Engler appeared in costume as an extra while filming on location at the Athabasca Glacier, part of his role as safety officer for the film. At one point the crew was setting up under an icefall Engler deemed dangerous, ordering them out from under it - soon after, an avalanche came down and buried the location they'd been in. Fred Brewster provided 80 horses and 50 longhorn cattle from his Jasper outfit for the film. Also includes the October 1953 edition of "Universal International Studio Club News" newsletter covering the filming of "Far Country."

History / Biographical: "Across the Great Divide," called "Mountain Maverick" during production, 1977, directed by Stewart Raffill and starring Robert Logan, Heather Rattery, and Mark Edward Hall. Set in the American Rockies, 1876, a pair of orphans, aided by an itinerant gambler, make their way west through the wilderness to inherit a ranch in Oregon. Location filming primarily around the Seebe area, including Mickey Bailey's Wildlife Unlimited game farm at the base of Yamnuska, and the Mount Assiniboine area.

During the Great Depression, a young tomboy runs away from her Chicago guardian to join her father, who is working in a Pacific Northwest lumber camp. Riding the rails west, she teams up with tough, young hobos and a protective wolf. Location filming near the Crowsnest Pass and at Fort Steele Historic Park for the steam engine scenes, as well as the lower mainland region of British Columbia.

History / Biographical: "To Elvis With Love" also known as "Touched by Love," 1980, directed by Gus Trikonis and starring Deborah Raffin, Diane Lane, Michael Learned, Clu Gulager, and John Amos. Based on a real-life therapist who cared for a wheelchair-bound girl suffering with cerebral-palsy. The young, unresponsive patient is rehabilitated through correspondence with her favourite performer Elvis Presley. Location filming in Banff townsite and vicinity—Banff Springs Golf Course Clubhouse, Banff High School, and Lake Minnewanka road. A number of Banff teenagers were used in the movie as well as a group of special-needs students from Calgary.

Set in Alaska, a burly trapper escapes into the wilderness after accidentally shooting his friend’s son. While pursuing a solitary life, he encounters a mother Siberian snow tiger and her cubs. When the tigress is killed by hunters, the trapper adopts the orphan tigers and defends them from hunters. Location filming mostly around the Kananaskis Country and Canmore areas.

History / Biographical: "Why Shoot the Teacher?" 1977, directed by Silvio Narizzano and starring Bud Cort, Samantha Eggar, Kenneth Griffith, and Chris Wiggins. Based on the book of the same name by Max Braithwaite, a newly graduated man from an eastern Canadian city accepts a teaching job in a one-room school house in rural Saskatchewan during the Great Depression. Living in the school house basement, he has a hard time connecting to the town or students, but eventually grows to understand and appreciate those around him, gaining their love and respect in return. Location filming mostly in and around Hanna, Alberta.
