History / Biographical: The Senior Friends of Banff, a senior citizens social and philanthropic organization at Banff, Alberta, Canada, was established in 1965 and operated until 1984 when the group amalgamated with the Banff Senior Citizens' Society. The Senior Friends organized social and recreational activities and raised funds for the Banff Library / Seniors Centre.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of minutes which describe regular and annual meetings and include note on amalgamation; also membership lists and financial statements. Also included is an original architectural drawing of the Banff Library/Senior Citizens Centre prepared by Bond Mogridge Architects.

History / Biographical: George A. Stewart, 1830-1917, was the first Superintendent of Rocky Mountains Park (now Banff National Park) from 1886-1897. George and Frances Stewart, 1843-1932, and family were prominent early residents of Banff.

Scope & Content: Fonds includes a scrapbook, a blotting book of drawings, and one photographic print.; The scrapbook contains newspaper accounts by travellers in the Rockies and Selkirks, particularly descriptions of Banff town, Banff Springs Hotel, the hot springs and vicinity. The Stewarts are frequently mentioned, having extended their hospitality to the various writers. The album has been autographed at a later date by Olive Stewart Foster. The blotting book contains 54 drawings pertaining to unknown persons and locations and is thought to have belonged to George Stewart. Drawings are possibly by Rev. F. G. Christmas. Location of images appears to be Manitoba or north-western Ontario.; Photographs are: Stewart family in front of their first home in Banff and Cave and Basin bathhouse, both by Boorne & May, Photographers, Calgary, N.W.T., ca.1888; and "Grandmother Stewart's house in Banff."

History / Biographical: The Town of Banff is an Alberta municipality situated in Banff National Park. It gained autonomy from the Government of Canada, Department of the Environment beginning 1990.

Scope & Content: Fonds includes: guest book used at Incorporation ceremonies at Town of Banff Offices, January 1, 1990, and Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, January 27, 1990; sample sixty-year resident scroll; sound recording of incorporation ceremony at Whyte Museum by Banff Centre technicians; photograph of Mayor Leslie Taylor and Councillors in Town Office, 1991 by Simon Hoyle. History / Biographical: Walter S. Painter, 1877-1957, was an architect in Canada and the United States. Painter rose to prominence early in life as a theatre architect and joined the Canadian Pacific Railway as chief architect while still in his twenties. Projects in the Banff, Alberta area included design of the tower and wings of the Banff Springs Hotel, the first concrete addition to the Lake Louise Chalet (Chateau Lake Louise), and the Cave and Basin. other Canadian projects were major CPR stations and hotels from Montreal to the west coast. For a period, Painter was in partnership with Frank Swales. In later years, Painter was involved in American projects, standardization of school buildings in Chile, and the Painter system of pre-fabrication, with particular interests in housing and concrete construction designs. Walter Painter built his home in Banff in 1912 and retired there in 1947. He was married to Estelle (Stella) Painter, 1880-1975. They had two children, Betty Painter (Walker) and Brook Painter.

The papers primarily concern Painter's architectural career, theatres, CPR projects including stations and hotels from Montreal to Victoria, Banff Springs Hotel, Cave and Basin, Glacier, British Columbia projects and the Lake Louise Chalet. Personal papers, ca.1930-1956, record Painter's views on economics, philosophy, religion, housing, etc.; Family photographs, pertaining to Walter Painter, Stella Painter, Betty Painter and Brook Painter.
