- Civilian Internment in Canada examines abuse of the civil rights and liberties of tens of thousands of Canadians and Canadian residents via internment from 1914 to the present day. This ongoing story spans both war and peacetime and has affected people from a wide variety of political backgrounds and ethno-cultural communities, bequeathing a complex legacy for survivors and their descendants. Despite the well-known impounding of tens of thousands of Japanese, Ukrainians, assorted eastern Europeans, Germans, and Italians as "enemy aliens" during the two World Wars, civilian internment in this country has not been widely discussed, particularly in comparative ways. Indeed, there has been a propensity to sweep these events under the proverbial rug, keeping them out of the national discourse. Civilian Internment in Canada brings together senior scholars in the field of internment and civil liberties studies with emerging scholars, graduate students, community members, teachers, public historians, artists, former internees, descendants of internees, and redress activists to examine the processes and consequences of civilian internment during real and perceived wartime contexts, ranging from the Great War to the Cold War to the "War on Terror." It demonstrates the ways in which "shared authority" between scholars and subjects can both reshape our understanding of crucial episodes in Canada's history and bring a sense of vibrancy and immediacy to the all-too current question of civil liberties and minority rights in today's security state. -- from back cover

- Sandy Saito looks back to his childhood in 1940s Vancouver, when he was eight years old. He's a happy kid: he goes to school, reads comic books and is obsessed with baseball -- especially the Asahi baseball team, the pride of the Japanese-Canadian community. Then the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor -- and everything changes. The kids Sandy used to play with every day now call him names and chase him from the playground. He and his family are no longer permitted to go outside at night or visit certain areas of the city. Japanese-Canadians are stripped of their rights, their jobs and their homes, and soon the government begins to round up Japanese families, sending them to internment camps. It isn't long before Sandy's family is among them. The reader accompanies Sandy on his journey to the camp and the seasons that follow in this historically accurate portrayal of a grave chapter in both Canadian and American history. David Namisato's detailed art depicts the 1940s setting with cultural and historical precision, following Sandy and his family as they are forced to leave their home and relocate to a prison camp comprised of crowded, makeshift barracks in a remote site without electricity or running water. Many and varied insect boxes displayed, very finely crafted, all secured to framework. The black boxes are for displaying fireflies. The shopkeeper is also secured to the display. - Traditional Japanese house model. 2 storey wood construction which disassembles into 10 pieces. The rectangular base is raised slightly above ground level by a narrower under base. 12 wood and paper, and 2 wooden lattice work sliding panels open up to verandas on each level, front and back. 1 hinged door of wood and paper in front, roof is peaked with exterior ride pole and no decoration. The 2 sides of the roof are held together by a piece of tape which acts like a hinge. Inside a raised platform spans the width and 3/4 the length of the main floor. The second floor is made from a single thin slab of wood. "Made in Japan" is stamped onto tape on roof, both bases, the second floor, the front and back walls and the free standing partition. Upper middle class house for family of 4 or 8. Upstairs, sleeping quarters, 6 or 4 separate rooms divided by sliding, removable) doors, 2 rooms used for sleeping , 2 or 3 per room. 1 room reserved for special living room ? with "Tokono-Ma". where hanging scroll hangs, and where flower arrangement is weekly changed. 1 room used for Buddhism altar. 6 feet high, 2 1/2 feet wide. with ancestors after death names, etc. Altar flower is changed every week. Steamed rise is presented every morning. Any special gift, especially food, cakes, cookis, etc. is placed in front of this altar before anyone unwraps it. Those 2 rods are used for overnight company with the best hudon and so forth. All the rooms could be turned into one large banquet room. Downstairs, 2 rooms , on the floor, and kitchen on the dirt floor? 1 room , living room and eating room, during the day, sleeping room for a couple during the night? 1 room, further from the main road and the better room during the day, sleeping room during the night?

- Japanese food storage cupboard. Rectangular shaped cupboard, solid wood back and top with wood grid sides and front. Wooden grid sides are immovable, 7.1h x 4.5w, and has wooden frame, 0.5w. Grid covers green wire mesh glued onto inside of cupboard, the two wooden framed grids covering green wire mesh in front are both movable side to side, the left one, 8.6h x 6.3w, fits into the groove, carved width of the insides of both the top and bottom of the cupboard, nearest the front. The right one, 8.6h x 6.3w, fits into the groove, carved the width of the insides of both the top and bottom of the cupboard, located behind the aforementioned one two drawers are located side by side at the bottom of the cupboard, 6.81 x 1.7h x 5.8w. Both pull out by way of round white knobs. Cupboard set onto four legs of wooden scroll design in front, plain at back. Located on the inside of the cupboard are two shelves, 2.91 x 7.0w. The left handed one is set lower then the other, 3.2 from bottom, flush to the left side grid. The right handed one is set higher then the other, 6.0 from the bottom, flush to the right side grid.
