Sweeping curvilinear lines imbue it with a poetic serenity, while the upright lines of a tree on the extreme right serve to stabilize the whole. The artist increasingly restricted his darkest tones in his mature work, opening up his pictures and enhancing the impression of vastness so characteristic of his Rocky Mountain scenes.” -- “Charles John Collings, 1848-1931” Catalogue Raisonne by Linda Heath

Marks; the cardboard has been cracked through the vertical middle.“Collings spent the first 40 years of his life in South Devon, only a few miles from the coast. Harbour views, often with boats, dominate his early work. This studious sketch, with the paper divided into three sections to accommodate mast, reflection, and winch details, was probably made when the artist was about 20.” -- “Charles John Collings, 1848-1931” Catalogue Raisonne by Linda Heath
