History / Biographical: Nancy (Ford) Dart, daughter of Minneapolis businessman Allyn K. Ford, became a member of the Alpine Club of Canada in 1953. She lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Scope & Content: Item pertains to one black soft cover scrapbook with alternating paper dividers and plastic sleeves. Book contains newsletters, brochures, and letters pertaining to the Alpine Club of Canada dated 1922-2003, newsletters from the American Alpine Club 1941, and various travel and dining brochures for Jasper and the Jasper Park Lodge from ca. 1954. Tucked into a pouch inside the front cover are two letters addressed to Nancy Dart in 2003 regarding her 50th anniversary as a member of the ACC, four ACC annual newsletter booklets from 1922, 1923, and 1925, and an envelope addressed to Nancy Ford (Dart) containing paperwork pertaining to her admission to the ACC in 1953. Items throughout the scrapbook are either tucked into the plastic sleeves or dispersed throughout the pages. Contents include annual ACC camp brochures (one from 1908, others from the 1940s and 50s), letters (one addressed to Geoffrey Howard from Allyn K. Ford, in 1941 and another addressed to Mr. Ford, probably Allyn Ford, in 1953), photographs/postcards taped to a page divider, seven dinner lists from 1953 for the Jasper Park Lodge (all dated Friday, July 10 but each has a different header picture), a booklet from the third annual ACC membership dinner, a brochure for the 1941 annual American Alpine Club meeting and dinner, three tourism magazines for Jasper from the Canadian National Railway, one trail map of Jasper and one of Banff, an ACC newsletter and brochure for the Mountain Leadership Conference from 1989, a typed copy of a short story "A Journey with the Men of Alps" held together with a small pin (possibly a dramatic retelling of Allyn Ford's first trip to the Rockies), two ACC crossword puzzels (one partially completed), and a notice from the American Alpine Club pertaining to America's involvement in World War II from 1941. Tucked inside the back cover is a red paper envelope containing two photographs (possibly printed off the computer) of A.O. Wheeler from the 1923 ACC camp in Larch Valley.

History / Biographical: Elizabeth (Lizzie) Rummel, 1897-1980, was a lodge owner and operator at Banff National Park, Alberta and Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park, British Columbia, Canada. Rummel was born Elisabeth von Rummel to an aristocratic German family. With her mother and sisters, she ranched near Millarville, Alberta, after being stranded there during the First World War. In 1938, Lizzie moved to the mountains and became involved in early ski and backcountry operations. Her forty-two year career in the mountains included: working at Mount Assiniboine Lodge until 1942; managing Skoki Lodge and, at various times, Temple Chalet and Lake Louise Ski Lodge, ca.1943-1950; owning and operating Sunburst Lake Camp, 1950-1970; and working as assistant and oral history interviewer at the Archives of the Canadian Rockies (now the Archives of the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies) from 1966 to 1980. Lizzie was active in the town affairs of Canmore, Alberta, where she lived, as well as in various conservation and recreation organizations. She became a member of the Order of Canada in 1980.

History / Biographical: Norman Bethune Sanson, 1862-1949, was a naturalist, meteorologist and museum curator at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Born in Toronto, Ontario, the son of a prominent clergyman, he developed a life-long interest in natural history as a boy. Sanson came west in 1885 to fight in the Riel Rebellion as a member of the Queen's Own Rifles.; In 1892, Sanson came to Banff as an accountant for the Sanitarium Hotel. He also did book-keeping for other local businesses and handled the town's weather reports. In 1896 he was appointed curator of the Park Museum and also worked as zookeeper for the Banff Zoo. From 1896 until 1931, Sanson was meteorological officer and curator of the Park Museum. In 1903 an observatory was built on Sulphur Mountain on a site chosen by Sanson. During the period 1903-1931, Sanson made one thousand ascents of Sulphur Mountain to collect weather records. In 1948, the Dominion Government acknowledged his many years of service by naming a peak on the mountain for him.; As a nature enthusiast, Sanson was well-known both in Banff and beyond. He was an avid collector of flora and fauna, both privately and through his job as museum curator. Sanson was an active member of the Alpine Club of Canada, the Skyline Hikers of the Canadian Rockies and the Banff Rotary Club. He was a warden of St. George's Anglican Church and a supporter of the Canadian Bible Society. He was active in community events such as the Banff Winter Carnival, for which he organized and led the snowshoeing events. An ardent mountain traveller, he enjoyed both hiking and snowshoeing. Following retirement, Sanson toured extensively on foot throughout Britain and Europe.

History / Biographical: Peter and Catharine Whyte were artists, photographers, outdoor enthusiasts, travelers, philanthropists and cultural workers at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Peter Whyte, 1905-1966, was born at Banff in 1905 to pioneer merchant Dave White and Annie (Curren) White. He was an accomplished skier and ski jumper and one of the region's first native-born painters with an intimate knowledge of the mountains and was an active photographer from ca.1920 until the 1950s. Peter Whyte studied art at the Otis Art Institute, Los Angeles, 1923-1924, and at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Boston, 1925, where he met Catharine Robb. Catharine Robb Whyte, 1906-1979, was born in 1906 at Concord, Massachusetts and grew up amongst the wealth and creativity of the Robb and Morse families. She studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Boston, 1925-1929.; Following their marriage in 1930, the Whytes pursued a life of painting, photography, hiking, skiing and travelling. Their log home and studio in Banff became a focal point for their artist friends, Stoney Indians and local pioneers. Catharine shared Pete's involvement in skiing and hiking organizations and together they managed Skoki Lodge from 1932-1934. In following years, the Whytes travelled extensively. During the Second World War, Peter served in the reserve army, with the Royal Canadian Air Force as a photographer and, briefly, as an official war artist. Catharine continued to paint and maintain their home and, when possible, accompanied Pete to his military postings. In civilian life, Pete resumed his art career, explored new photographic techniques and sculpted.; Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the Whytes formulated plans for a foundation to preserve the art and history of the Canadian Rockies. Plans for a building to house an archives, public library and gallery were in preparation when Pete died in 1966. The Peter Whyte Foundation was named in his honour. Catharine immersed herself in the development of what is now the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, in the cultural community, painting, outdoor activity, travel and work with the Stoney First Nations. She became a more active photographer, recording her travels and outdoor pursuits. She served in an official capacity with numerous cultural and charitable organizations, was a patron to individuals studying art and music, and supported numerous causes relating to the Stoney First Nations. Catharine also supported causes related to multiculturalism, regional culture and recreation, and cancer research. Despite her modesty and often anonymous patronage of causes, Catharine was recognized with numerous awards and honours, including the Order of Canada in 1978. She died in Banff in 1979.

History / Biographical: The Wilson family were guides, outfitters and ranchers at Morley, Kootenay Plains, Banff and Nordegg, Alberta, Canada. Thomas Edmonds (Tom) Wilson, 1859- 1933, and Minnie McDougall Wilson, 1865-1936, had six children, including sons John Clark Wilson, 1888-1932, and Thomas Edmonds (Ed) Wilson, 1892-1973. Daughters were Ada, 1886-1967?, Rene, Bessie and Dora. Tom Wilson is credited with the discovery of Lake Louise in July of 1882, while working as a packer on the Canadian Pacific Railway survey through the mountains. In 1883, Wilson established his own business at Banff, Lake Louise and Field, British Columbia. After selling the business in 1904, Tom Wilson operated a horse ranch at Kootenay Plains. He later retired to Banff. Ed Wilson was born at Morley and raised in Banff. Around 1910 he began working for Brewster Trading Company at Banff and, later, Lake Louise. Just before the First World War, he moved to Nordegg, where he worked for the Bighorn Trading Company for many years.

History / Biographical: The Alpine Club of Canada, the national mountaineering club, was co-founded in 1906 by A. O. Wheeler and Elizabeth Parker, and other like-minded climbers. The club espoused scientific study and exploration, cultivation of art, public education, acquisition of climbing skills, and preservation of natural areas within the mountainous regions of Canada. Through a national executive, local sections and volunteer committees, the club provided climbing camps, clubhouse, huts, and publications, including the Canadian Alpine Journal. ACC expeditions and projects resulted in pioneer exploration, first ascents, and included mountain warfare training during the Second World War. In recent years, the club's membership has increased dramatically with the popularity of climbing and its programs have evolved to serve the needs of unguided climbers using sophisticated technical aids.

History / Biographical: Edward Feuz Jr., 1884-1981, was a Canadian Pacific Railway mountain guide at Lake Louise, Alberta and Glacier and Golden, British Columbia, Canada. Feuz was the son of one of the first Swiss Guides brought to Canada by the Canadian Pacific Railway. He climbed at Field and Glacier House in 1903 with his father and guided during summers from 1905 to 1912, settling that year in the Edelweiss Village at Golden, British Columbia. Until his retirement in the 1950s, he accompanied the finest climbers and was involved in over seventy first ascents of peaks over 3048 metres.

History / Biographical: Byron Hill Harmon, 1876-1942, was a professional photographer and businessman at Banff, Alberta, Canada. He was born near Tacoma, Washington, USA and operated a portrait studio there for a time. In 1903, while travelling around the United States and Canada as an itinerant photographer, he decided to settle in Banff and by 1907 had produced enough mountain views to begin selling a line of postcards. Between 1906 and 1913, Harmon was official photographer for the Alpine Club of Canada and made trips in numerous mountain areas, such as the Bugaboos (1910) and Mount Robson (1911, 1913). Harmon personally financed trips into other areas, such as Tonquin Valley (1918) and Lake of the Hanging Glaciers (1920, 1922), producing both still photographs and motion pictures for commercial sale. After his last major expedition in 1924 across Saskatchewan Glacier, through to Maligne Lake and back to Banff by packtrain, Harmon devoted most of his time to photographing scenes along the railway, skiing in the Assiniboine and Skoki regions, and the annual rides and hikes of the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies and the Sky Line Trail Hikers of the Canadian Rockies. At the same time he managed several businesses, including a drug store, fountain lunch, theatre and book store. In his later years, Harmon spent much time travelling and photographing in other parts of the world. The business, Byron Harmon Photos, was managed successively by his son, Don Harmon, then his grand-daughter, Carole Harmon.

History / Biographical: Ulysses LaCasse (or Ulysse; or La Casse), 1888-1972, was a trail guide and national park warden at Lake Louise and Banff, Alberta, Canada. LaCasse came to Banff in 1908 and worked in various cooking jobs including trail cook for surveys and trail outfits. He guided Caroline Hinman's trail riding groups before joining the Canadian Army in Europe and Siberia. LaCasse accompanied Byron Harmon, Soapy Smith and Louis Freeman on their five hundred mile expedition through the Canadian Rockies, 1924. History / Biographical: Leonard Henry Leacock, 1904-1992, was a musician and educator at Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Leacock was born in England and raised in Banff, Alberta. He was educated in Banff and Boston and through the Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto, and the Royal School of Music, London, England. Leacock joined the staff of Mount Royal College, Calgary as a piano teacher in 1924 and retired from teaching ca.1989. His music career also included performing, composing and adjudicating. Throughout his life, Leacock was an avid mountaineer and photographer. He took numerous hiking and horse trips in the Banff, Jasper and Yoho areas and sometimes worked in trail camps or as a guide.

Scope & Content: Fonds consist of four separate series: A. I.A. Photography: negatives; B. I.C. Photography: transparencies, 35mm; C. I.D. Photography: prints; D. I.B. Photography: lantern slides.; Fonds consists mainly of scenic transparency views arising from Leacock's climbs, hikes, horse and car trips in the Canadian Rockies and Selkirks from the Crowsnest Pass through Jasper National Park, ca.1939 to 1984. Also included are travels in Yukon, Canada and the United States, including Alaska. Negatives date from 1925 to 1940? and pertain to Assiniboine, Lake Louise, Banff, Banff-Jasper, Columbia Icefield and other mountain areas; also natural history, including wildflowers and wildlife. A small number of negatives are accompanied by prints. History / Biographical: The Moore family resided at Banff, Alberta and Yoho Valley, British Columbia, Canada. Col. Philip A. Moore, 1879-1951, was a guide, soldier, lecturer and publicist. Pearl Brewster Moore, 1889-1973, was a homemaker and tourist lodge operator. Daughter, Edmee Brewster Moore (Reid), 1908-1971, was a homemaker and wife of Charles Reid. Pearl Brewster, born in Banff, was an active sportswoman. In 1905, she met Philip Moore, who had joined Jim and Bill Brewster in the packing business. The Moores made their home in Banff in 1907. A trained soldier, Philip Moore distinguished himself in France in the First World War and served with the Calgary Highlanders during the Second World War. The Moores ran various Canadian Pacific Railway facilities, including Yoho Valley Bungalow Camp, during the 1920s and early 1930s. Col. Moore lectured widely during this period using motion pictures and lantern slides. During the 1930s, the Moores travelled extensively and were active in the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies. Pearl Moore was instrumental in the Banff-Jasper fund during the Second World War. In 1971, Pearl Moore gave their log home, a showcase of Stoney Nakoda artifacts and art, to the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies.

History / Biographical: William L. Putnam is a mountaineer and writer from Springfield, Massachusetts, USA. Putnam has written about Glacier House, the centre of alpinism in the Selkirks during the 1880s-1900s and about Swiss guides. He has also co-authored several climbing guides to the mountain regions of western Canada.

Scope & Content: Collection consists of research materials collected by Putnam. Textual items are a photocopy of the Glacier House scrapbook, 1897-1910, and a drawing titled "Panorama du Sommet M Sir Donald," by Felix LePrince-Ringuet, from photographs taken by him on July 26, 1899. History / Biographical: Herbert E. Sampson, 1871-1962, was a lawyer and mountaineer at Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. Sampson was a life member of the Alpine Club of Canada, 1910, President, 1930-1932, and Honorary President, 1945. He attended all but six annual mountaineering camps between 1911 and 1956 and made over seventy-five ascents, including two first ascents.

History / Biographical: Erling Strom, 1897-1986, was a skier and lodge-owner who lived at Mount Assiniboine, British Columbia, Canada; New York and Vermont, USA; and Norway. Norwegian-born Strom pioneered cross-country skiing in the United States and the Canadian Rockies. He operated Mount Assiniboine Camp from 1928 until the 1970s. Strom's mountain expertise was critical to the success of the Lindley-Liek expedition which conquered Mount McKinley, Alaska in 1932. His autobiography "Pioneers on skis" describes his career as a ski instructor and lodge operator.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of mainly of textual records in the form of scrapbook, 1932-1963; and publications, n.d. 1952-1978, pertaining to skiing, Mt. Assiniboine Lodge and region. Publications include issues of Strom's newsletter, "The Assiniboine wrangler."; Also includes: "To the top of the continent" by Frederick A. History / Biographical: The Wardle family was comprised of husband and wife, James Morey Wardle (June 26,1888 - May 18,1971) and Maud Leette (Roney) Wardle (May 24,1889 - December 1,1969), and their one child, Dorothy Hope Wardle (May 23,1919 - July 20,2003). James Wardle, born in Chiliwack, British Columbia, was a civil engineer and public servant. He was the Superintendent of Banff National Park from 1918-1921, Chief Engineer for Parks Canada from 1921-1935, and Deputy Minister of the Interior from 1935-1936. He is primarily known as a highway design engineer, particularly for building the Banff-Windermere, Banff-Lake Louise, and Banff-Jasper highways. He was a councillor for the Municipality of Rockcliffe Park in Ontario and he was the President of the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies in Banff from 1925-1929. Mount Wardle in Vermillion was named after him in 1921. James married Leette on November 4, 1913, with whom he had one child, Dorothy. Born in Calgary, Alberta, Dorothy (also known as Dot and Dorie) grew up in Banff, Alberta and Ottawa, Ontario, due to her father's position with the federal government. She was educated at the Mountain School in Banff and at the Elmwood School in Ottawa. All three family members were graduates of Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. James graduated in 1912 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Leette graduated with a Bachelor's degree, and in 1942, Dorothy also earned a Bachelor's degree. Dorothy was prominent in student life and active in athletics. In 1941, Dorothy became the first woman elected as President of the Alma Mater Society and during her academic career, Dorothy was a member of the Levana Intercollegiate Debative, University Centenary Committee, and Queen’s War Aid Commission. Dorothy spent her career as a freelance writer however, upon graduation she served as the first Secretary-In-Charge of Records at Carleton College (now Carleton University) from 1942-1944 in Ottawa and in the mid-1950s worked as a secretary for the Glenbow Foundation in Calgary. Dorothy pursued a lifelong interest in traveling, art, and antiques. Although she was fiercely proud and protective of Banff and the Park, and remained a volunteer and patron of the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, Dorothy eventually settled in Sidney, British Columbia and shared an apartment with Sheila Iris Ritchie, with whom Dorothy travelled extensively. After her death in 2003, Dorothy, "Dorie," was laid to rest alongside her parents in the Old Banff Cemetery.
