Scope & Content: File pertains to 10 b&w prints depicting the 1954 Maycroft Ski Meet, including participants, starting area with parking lot, and finish line. The Maycroft Ski Meet was an annual community event held on a hill near the Oldman River that operated as part of carnival events that tied with the crowning of a Carnival Queen at the Banff Winter Carnival. Participants were towed up the hill with a rope tow operated by a tractor. The Meets were eventually phased out following the openin of the (then named) West Castle Mountain Ski Hill in 1965.

History / Biographical: William "Bill" Royle (1905-1980) moved to Banff from Lethbridge in 1952 with his mother (Mary Elizabeth) and two young sons (Bernard and Walter), following the death of his wife. William started the business Banff Plumbing and Heating Ltd., which he operated until his death. William and his brother, John J. Royle, were also involved with a laundromat business in Banff. From its inception in 1953, William also worked as director and president of the Banff Park Savings and Credit Union (now Bow Valley Credit Union). In his spare time, William volunteered with the Banff Boy Scouts, as well as St. Mary's Church in Banff, the Seniors' Society and the Alberta Council of the Aging. William's son, Bernard, tragically passed away in a plane crash in 1969 while searching for new heliskiing routes in British Columbia with his friend, John Gow, who survived.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of photographs, published booklets and film reels which belonged to William Royle. Content pertains to the Banff Boy Scouts: local events, including Banff Winter Carnival, Banff Indian Days and Banff's Centennial Parade in 1967; hiking, camping, skiing and other recreational activities; Bernard Royle and friends; the Banff High School curling team; natural views and wildlife in Alberta and British Columbia; and other related subjects. History / Biographical: "Far Country," 1954, directed by Anthony Mann and starring James Stewart, Ruth Roman, Corinne Calvet, and Walter Brennan. A Wyoming cowboy drives a herd of cattle from Skagway, Alaska, to the Klondike hoping to make a profit selling to beef-starved miners in Dawson City, Yukon. But he is bedeviled by a corrupt Skagway sheriff-judge and his gang. After his partner is killed on their gold claim, the cowboy takes the law into his own hands. Location filming for all mountain scenes filmed in Jasper National Park (Athabasca Glacier, Mount Edith Cavell). Bruno Engler appeared in costume as an extra while filming on location at the Athabasca Glacier, part of his role as safety officer for the film. At one point the crew was setting up under an icefall Engler deemed dangerous, ordering them out from under it - soon after, an avalanche came down and buried the location they'd been in. Fred Brewster provided 80 horses and 50 longhorn cattle from his Jasper outfit for the film. Also includes the October 1953 edition of "Universal International Studio Club News" newsletter covering the filming of "Far Country."
