- History / Biographical
- Robert George Brett, 1851-1929, was a prominent physician, hotel-hospital owner, businessman and politician Banff, Alberta from 1883 until 1929. Brett was born in Strathroy, Ontario, son of James Brett and Catherine Mallon. He was educated as a physician at the University of Toronto (M.D., 1874), and practiced medicine at Arkona, Ontario. He moved to Winnipeg in 1880, where he helped found the Manitoba Medical College.
- R. G. Brett moved to Banff in 1886, founding the Banff Sanitarium. In 1909 he established the Brett Hospital. Brett also had numerous other businesses and real estate in Banff (including the National Park Drug Store, the Sanitarium Bottling Co., the Bretton Hall Hotel, Lithia Bottling Co.) and elsewhere.
- In 1878, Brett married Louise Theodora Hungerford, 1855-1935, of Waterford, Ontario. Of their five children, only two survived infancy, Reginald H. "Harry", 1879-1925, and Robert Earle, 1887-1912. Earle Brett was survived by Maidie (Stacpole) Brett, whom he married in 1910, and by an infant daughter. Dr. Harry Brett was married to Helen Brett, 1877-1964, who outlived the rest of her family by many years. Associated closely with the Brett family was Dr. Brett's nurse, Annie McLauchlin.
- From 1881 to 1901, R. G. Brett was Conservative Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the North-West Territories, and from 1889 to 1891 he was president of the executive council. He was Lieutenant-Governor of Alberta from 1915 to 1925. He died in Calgary.

- History / Biographical
- Norman Bethune Sanson, 1862-1949, was a naturalist, meteorologist and museum curator at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Born in Toronto, Ontario, the son of a prominent clergyman, he developed a life-long interest in natural history as a boy. Sanson came west in 1885 to fight in the Riel Rebellion as a member of the Queen's Own Rifles.
- In 1892, Sanson came to Banff as an accountant for the Sanitarium Hotel. He also did book-keeping for other local businesses and handled the town's weather reports. In 1896 he was appointed curator of the Park Museum and also worked as zookeeper for the Banff Zoo. From 1896 until 1931, Sanson was meteorological officer and curator of the Park Museum. In 1903 an observatory was built on Sulphur Mountain on a site chosen by Sanson. During the period 1903-1931, Sanson made one thousand ascents of Sulphur Mountain to collect weather records. In 1948, the Dominion Government acknowledged his many years of service by naming a peak on the mountain for him.
- As a nature enthusiast, Sanson was well-known both in Banff and beyond. He was an avid collector of flora and fauna, both privately and through his job as museum curator. Sanson was an active member of the Alpine Club of Canada, the Skyline Hikers of the Canadian Rockies and the Banff Rotary Club. He was a warden of St. George's Anglican Church and a supporter of the Canadian Bible Society. He was active in community events such as the Banff Winter Carnival, for which he organized and led the snowshoeing events. An ardent mountain traveller, he enjoyed both hiking and snowshoeing. Following retirement, Sanson toured extensively on foot throughout Britain and Europe.

- The Wilson family were guides, outfitters and ranchers at Morley, Kootenay Plains, Banff and Nordegg, Alberta, Canada. Thomas Edmonds (Tom) Wilson, 1859- 1933, and Minnie McDougall Wilson, 1865-1936, had six children, including sons John Clark Wilson, 1888-1932, and Thomas Edmonds (Ed) Wilson, 1892-1973. Daughters were Ada, 1886-1967?, Rene, Bessie and Dora. Tom Wilson is credited with the discovery of Lake Louise in July of 1882, while working as a packer on the Canadian Pacific Railway survey through the mountains. In 1883, Wilson established his own business at Banff, Lake Louise and Field, British Columbia. After selling the business in 1904, Tom Wilson operated a horse ranch at Kootenay Plains. He later retired to Banff. Ed Wilson was born at Morley and raised in Banff. Around 1910 he began working for Brewster Trading Company at Banff and, later, Lake Louise. Just before the First World War, he moved to Nordegg, where he worked for the Bighorn Trading Company for many years.

- Frederick Archibald Brewster, 1883-1969, was an outfitter and guide at Jasper, Alberta, Canada. Brewster was born in Kildonan, Manitoba and in 1888 moved with his family to Banff, where he received his education. He subsequently attended St. John's College, Winnipeg, Manitoba and Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, obtaining a B.Sc. in Mining Engineering. Brewster worked briefly as a prospector and in 1910 embarked upon a long career as an outfitter and guide, first with Brewster and Moore. He established operations in Jasper in 1912 and was responsible for important parties, including those of Samuel Prescott Fay and the United States Biological Survey. Brewster served with distinction in the First World War and was involved with mountain warfare training of the Lovat Scouts in the Second World War. He supplemented his outfitting business with a series of camps which doubled as ski lodges: Fred Brewster's Rocky Mountain Camps, and boat concessions.

- Edward Feuz Jr., 1884-1981, was a Canadian Pacific Railway mountain guide at Lake Louise, Alberta and Glacier and Golden, British Columbia, Canada. Feuz was the son of one of the first Swiss Guides brought to Canada by the Canadian Pacific Railway. He climbed at Field and Glacier House in 1903 with his father and guided during summers from 1905 to 1912, settling that year in the Edelweiss Village at Golden, British Columbia. Until his retirement in the 1950s, he accompanied the finest climbers and was involved in over seventy first ascents of peaks over 3048 metres.

- Photographs pertain mainly to mountaineering trips and climbs, mainly led by Edward Feuz Jr. in the Rocky and Selkirk Mountains, and includes many first ascents. Many photographs were taken by clients who sent copies to Feuz. Photographs also pertain to clients, associates and friends, Lake Louise Chalet and Chateau Lake Louise, Lake Louise area, Feuz homes at Edelweiss and Golden, and scenic views in the Rocky and Selkirk Mountains. Negatives are largely unidentified. - The Moore family resided at Banff, Alberta and Yoho Valley, British Columbia, Canada. Col. Philip A. Moore, 1879-1951, was a guide, soldier, lecturer and publicist. Pearl Brewster Moore, 1889-1973, was a homemaker and tourist lodge operator. Daughter, Edmee Brewster Moore (Reid), 1908-1971, was a homemaker and wife of Charles Reid. Pearl Brewster, born in Banff, was an active sportswoman. In 1905, she met Philip Moore, who had joined Jim and Bill Brewster in the packing business. The Moores made their home in Banff in 1907. A trained soldier, Philip Moore distinguished himself in France in the First World War and served with the Calgary Highlanders during the Second World War. The Moores ran various Canadian Pacific Railway facilities, including Yoho Valley Bungalow Camp, during the 1920s and early 1930s. Col. Moore lectured widely during this period using motion pictures and lantern slides. During the 1930s, the Moores travelled extensively and were active in the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies. Pearl Moore was instrumental in the Banff-Jasper fund during the Second World War. In 1971, Pearl Moore gave their log home, a showcase of Stoney Nakoda artifacts and art, to the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies.

- Mollie E. Smith Ross, ca.1860-1897, and Peter Murray Ross, ca.1863-1928, lived at Banff and Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Mary Emma Jane (Mollie) Smith was born in Jackson, Michigan, USA and came to Banff for health reasons, ca.1889. Among her friends in Banff were Anglican church minister Rev. F. Granville (Eric) Christmas, 1854-1931, and druggist Peter Ross. Mollie Smith and Peter Ross were married in 1892 by Rev. Charles W. Gordon and moved to Edmonton in 1893, where Ross continued in the pharmaceutical business and the couple raised a family. Rev. F. G. Christmas chronicled his admiration of Mollie Smith in a scrapbook that he later presented to her.

- The scrapbook contains newspaper accounts by travellers in the Rockies and Selkirks, particularly descriptions of Banff town, Banff Springs Hotel, the hot springs and vicinity. The Stewarts are frequently mentioned, having extended their hospitality to the various writers. The album has been autographed at a later date by Olive Stewart Foster. The blotting book contains 54 drawings pertaining to unknown persons and locations and is thought to have belonged to George Stewart. Drawings are possibly by Rev. F. G. Christmas. Location of images appears to be Manitoba or north-western Ontario.

- Helen Louise (Fulmer) Wells, 1893-1980, was a long-time resident of Banff, Alberta, Canada. She was the daughter of pioneer Banff residents Minnie Christina Fulmer, 1868-1962, and Walter P. Fulmer, 1863-1948. The family also included another daughter, Alice G. Fulmer, 1896-1989. The Fulmers were very active in local life and recreation and made numerous trips in the Canadian Rockies. In 1927, Helen Fulmer married Fred Wells, 1873-1975. The couple lived in Banff until the death of Fred Wells in 1975 at which time Helen Wells retired to Edmonton. Helen Wells was particularly interested in the history and Banff and area.

- The Norman Luxton family was a prominent family in Banff, Alberta, Canada from 1904 until 1962. Daughter Eleanor Luxton maintained the family's position in the town until her death in 1995.
- Publisher and businessman Norman K. Luxton, 1876-1962, was the son of Winnipeg Free Press co-founder William Luxton. After working for the Winnipeg Free Press, Norman Luxton travelled, then joined the Calgary Herald for eight years. In 1901, he journeyed 10,000 miles on the Pacific in the dug-out canoe Tilikum. After becoming ill, Luxton abandoned the trip in Fiji and came to Banff to recuperate. The around-the-world trip was subsequently completed by his sailing partner, Capt. John Voss.
- Luxton bought Banff's Crag and Canyon newspaper in 1902 and remained as publisher until 1951. Also in 1902, he established the Sign of the Goat Curio store which specialized in Stoney Indian handicrafts and taxidermy specimens. Other significant Luxton businesses were the King Edward Hotel and Livery, Luxton Bros. insurance (with brother Louis Luxton) and the Lux Block, which included a hotel, the Lux Theatre and retail stores.
- In 1904, Norman Luxton married Georgina (Georgie) Elizabeth McDougall, 1870-1965, of the pioneer missionary McDougall family of Morley, Alberta. In addition to her McDougall connections, Georgie Luxton was related by marriage to Senator George Ross. Norman and Georgie Luxton had one child, Eleanor Georgina, born in Banff in 1908.
- The Luxtons were important Banff "boosters" with involvement in numerous local organizations and events. Norman Luxton managed the Banff Indian Days from 1909 to 1950, was a founder of Banff Winter Carnival and was involved with native events at the Calgary Stampede for 25 years. In 1953, Norman established a museum to house his native artifacts. The Luxton Museum was built in co-operation with Eric Harvie of the Glenbow Foundation of Calgary. After Luxton's death, the museum continued to be managed by the Glenbow until 1992.
- Eleanor Luxton, 1908-1995, was a writer, historian, researcher, engineer, teacher and business woman. After graduating from high school in Banff in 1926, she attended the University of Alberta from 1926 until 1939, receiving degrees in history (BA '30, MA'33), a Diploma in Education (1931) and subsequent education, biology and natural history courses during the summers.
- Between 1937 and 1956, Eleanor received further degrees and certificates from studies at Garbutt Business College (Calgary), St. Stephen's College (Edmonton), Ottawa Technical High School, Havergal Ladies College (Ontario), St. George Williams College (Montreal), McGill University (Montreal) and the Banff School of Fine Arts. Subjects studied included office practices, shorthand, machine draughting, English, civil engineering (BSc '46), German, broadcast writing, management, commerce, accounting and commercial law.
- Eleanor Luxton's extensive education overlapped and preceded a long and varied professional career. Her teaching career extended from high school teacher in Alberta (Banff and Sexsmith), 1933-1940, to university lecturer in Montreal in the 1950s. During the 1940s, she worked in locomotive design for the CPR in Montreal. Beginning in 1956 and continuing until 1965, when she returned to Banff to care for her mother, Eleanor worked throughout southern Alberta as a field researcher for Calgary's Glenbow Foundation. From 1965 until her death in 1995, Eleanor remained in Banff in her family home and pursued an active career in writing and research.

- Bill Waterworth (1922-2009) was born on Marten Street in Mrs. Thomson's nursing home in Banff. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force at the age of 18. On September 19, 1942, Waterworth was shot down over the French coast just short of completing his 33rd mission. Waterworth avoided capture by German patrols for two weeks before being captured and taken prisoner by the Gestapo. He was sent by boxcar to a Prisoner of War camp - Stalag VIIIB/344 - in Lamsdorf, Germany where he remained for three years.
- In 1946, Bill married Bernice "Bern" Wilson (d. 2003), who was a granddaughter of Tom Wilson. Together they had three children, Lynn, Bunty, and Christie.

- Arthur Oliver Wheeler (1860-1945) DLS, ALS, BCLS, was born in Ireland, arriving in Canada in 1876. Wheeler was a mountaineer, co-founder of the Alpine Club of Canada (1906), and Dominion Land Surveyor. In 1913, Wheeler was appointed Boundary Commissioner and tasked with photo surveying the Alberta / British Columbia interprovincial boundary.

- Fonds consists of 53 diaries pertaining to personal life, travel, office work, and Alpine Club of Canada camps. Diaries range in date from 1885 to 1944. Also included are two volumes/scrapbooks compiled by A.O. Wheeler. Both volumes include numerous articles, newspaper clippings, letters, ACC brochures and notices addressed to ACC members. Volume one covers the period 1902 to 1913; volume two includes materials from 1914 to 1940. A inventory of both volumes, compiled by ACC member Paul Geddes, is also included. Additionally there are 7 volumes of notes corresponding to the photographs A.O. Wheeler took. Photographic material consists of 66 albums which contain approximately 5000 photographs, black and white positive prints from glass negatives, all 12 x 16 cm. The first album is dated 1915, the last 1924. Some of the albums contain a small map printed on linen. - Jon Whelan (1952-2022) was a researcher, historian, and collector based in Banff, Alberta. Jon had a special interest in topics related to Banff National Park and Canadian Pacific Railway Company. Jon conducted independent research, as well as research for various authors and historians, from the 1980s onwards. Jon was also an active participant in municipal politics in Banff. "For most of Jon’s life, he was engaged in community affairs and fearless in voicing an opinion. He was successful in raising public awareness and his tenacity achieved a personal goal, which was to initiate the use of video for regular Town of Banff council meetings.
