- A revelatory portrait of eight Indigenous communities from across North America, shown through never-before-published archival photographs--a gorgeous extension of Paul Seesequasis's popular social media project. In 2015, writer and journalist Paul Seesequasis found himself grappling with the devastating findings of Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission report on the residential school system. He sought understanding and inspiration in the stories of his mother, herself a residential school survivor. Gradually, Paul realized that another, mostly untold history existed alongside the official one: that of how Indigenous peoples and communities had held together during even the most difficult times. He embarked on a social media project to collect archival photos capturing everyday life in First Nations, Metis and Inuit communities from the 1920s through the 1970s. As he scoured archives and libraries, Paul uncovered a trove of candid images and began to post these on social media, where they sparked an extraordinary reaction. Friends and relatives of the individuals in the photographs commented online, and through this dialogue, rich histories came to light for the first time. Blanket Toss Under Midnight Sun collects some of the most arresting images and stories from Paul's project. While many of the photographs live in public archives, most have never been shown to the people in the communities they represent. As such, Blanket Toss is not only an invaluable historical record, it is a meaningful act of reclamation, showing the ongoing resilience of Indigenous communities, past, present--and future. - In the archival record, photographs of Banff Indian Days have been framed primarily through a Settler lens. A more balanced approach to these images and the historical analysis of Settler-Indigenous relations during this event is needed. Using an interdisciplinary approach along the methodologies inspired by Indigenous epistemologies, I presented photographs of Banff Indian Days taken by Catharine and Peter WHyte in 1945-1955 to Stoney Nakoda Elders in a series of interviews. By employing the notion of photographs as 'relational objects' as outlined by scholars such as Elizabeth Edward, I seek to understand this concept of relationality and how it aligns with Stoney Nakoda perspectives. In this case study, the voices of Stoney Nakoda Elders, Catharine Whyte (via her written letters), and myself are included as a way to refram photographs of Banff Indian Days in a multivocal and multiperspectival way.

- More than 40 years ago, British Columbia photographer Art Twomey stumbled across a narrow crack in the desert floor in northern Arizona. It was a slot canyon, a stone crevasse – narrow, carved by water, its interior lost in shadow when seen by a curious person peering in from the rim. Twomey’s photos from that day were unlike anything he had ever put on emulsion. They pictured a dream world, an intricate underground fantasy where lines bent, topsy met turvy, upside was down, inside was out. The images made as much sense backwards as forwards, which is to say they made no sense at all. For over a decade, Twomey, Morrow and Schmidt spent spring and fall seasons hauling their cameras through the wildest, most intricately carved slot canyons they could find. At the time, slots were virtually unknown, their exquisite beauties not yet appreciated. There were no guidebooks, no guided tours, no high-resolution satellite images to work from. - This fifth and final volume in the series dedicated to the National Gallery of Canada's immense photography collection documents the emergence of the medium as a recognized artistic discipline in Canada. The creation and growth of this unique collection reflects the enormous development in the practice, collection and display of photography over the latter half of the 20th century. Prior to this time, government institutions, commercial establishments and the legal, medical and journalism professions prized it for its documentary value. As a result, photographs rarely entered the collections of major institutions. This changed in the 1960s when art became more vigorous and dynamic. Photography especially articulated probing, contentious ideas of art, the artist, identity, sexuality and community. Art institutions, themselves undergoing radical transformation, acted as an interface between artist and public, and attempted to articulate movements and trends in art and photography. With dozens of full-page plates each accompanied by an individual abstract, the publication offers a scholarly essay providing artistic, cultural and historical context. Artists featured include those at the forefront of the changes in the 1960s and 1970s, as well as more contemporary figures who continue to push at the limits of the definition of the medium. - This beautifully illustrated book offers a comprehensive look at the career of photographer William Notman (1826-1891). Born in Scotland, Notman emigrated to Canada in 1856; he settled in Montreal and opened a photography studio that later had branches throughout Canada and the United States. Notman documented the development of a continent, photographing street scenes in burgeoning cities and modern transportation by steam and rail, and creating portraits of such notable figures as Mark Twain, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Sitting Bull, and Buffalo Bill. By fully exploiting the commercial and aesthetic potential of the rapidly advancing photographic technology, Notman contributed to the establishment of the socio-economic prominence of Montreal and played a key role in the formation of a Canadian national identity. - Collections of archival photographs have the capacity to provide multiple or alternative histories. In their photographic representations of Indigenous peoples, settler archives can provide a site for revealing the multilayered, fluid meanings. My case study is a group of early twentieth-century photographs (1903 - 1929) depicting members of the I~ya~he´ Nakoda First Nation from the Byron Harmon Photographic collection at the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies. By employing interdisciplinary methodologies with an overarching focus on writing the cultural biography of historical photographs, I perform a self-reflexive interrogation of this collection. I argue for a pluralized examination of historical photographs and photographic archives as a way to create new understandings of the past.

- Born in Germany, Fred Herzog came to Vancouver in 1953. Since that time, he has produced a substantial body of photographs, taking urban life in Vancouver—second-hand shops, vacant lots, neon signage and the crowds of people who have populated the city’s streets over the past fifty years—as his primary subject. Herzog has self-consciously drawn upon documentary traditions in photography while incorporating something of an outsider’s idiosyncratic sensitivity to a new environment into his work. Within his images, bodily gesture, the detritus of consumer culture and the architecture of the street take on a heightened resonance, as the impact of modernity becomes visible in the everyday life of the city. Much of Herzog’s work was produced on Kodachrome, a colour slide film that was difficult to work with in a spontaneous fashion. Herzog’s use of colour was unusual in the 1950s and 60s, a time when art photography was almost exclusively associated with black and white imagery. In this respect, his photographs can be seen as a pre-figuration of the “New Colour” of photographers such as Stephen Shore and William Eggleston, which received widespread acclaim in the 1970s, and the work of contemporary Vancouver photographers such as Roy Arden, Arni Haraldsson, Karin Bubaš and Christos Dikeakos. Herzog has been active in Vancouver’s art scene for more than forty years, while working as a medical photographer from 1957 to 1990. During that time he participated in group exhibitions at the National Gallery of Canada, Presentation House Gallery, Vancouver Art Gallery and UBC Fine Arts Gallery (now the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery) (From Vancouver Art Gallery website)
