Scope & Content: File consists of 13 antique maps, 6 of which depict regions in India and 7 which depict regions in Germany. Content pertains to a small map collection originally issued to Tim Ffrench (?) during WWII which were later owned by Nicholas Morant. Some maps of reserves contain personal annotations and highlighted/coloured routes; none of German maps are annotated. File also contains set of 4 rag paper mounts, annotated. 3 naming artist Walter Wilcox (likely formerly held his works but are now blank). One labelled 'Model'.

Notes: Maps were originally stored together in one poster tube labelled: "MAPS OF GERMANY INDIA See notes inside" Shipping label: PLS HOLD Armand To Nicholas Morant 222 Melville Ave Westmount Montreal" (with two 3 - cent stamps attached) Note inside, written by Nicholas Morant: "These maps were among those issued to Capt. Tim Ffrench (?) preparatory to intelligence work done during W. War II" Signed "Nick M." Wilcox mounts were stored in brown paper packaging with several other blank mounts (disposed of). Labelled section of original paper packaging has been stored with mounts in oversize box for reference.

History / Biographical: Frederick Albert Woodworth (August 8, 1895 - April 16, 1916) was the fifth child of eleven, born to parents Elizabeth and Benjamin Woodworth in the town of Banff. Fred Woodworth worked as an electrician in the mines at Bankhead prior to joining the war effort in February 1915. Fred was shot by enemy fire on April 16, 1916 and is now buried in Ypres, Belgium. Fred has a second memorial located in the Woodworth family section of the Banff Town Cemetery.

Scope & Content: File consists of a published guidebook for ice hockey, three menus/programmes for events in Banff, three postcards, three pages of loose poetry, and news clippings/pages from newspapers. Content pertains to a community Christmas dinner event at the King Edward Hotel in Banff; loose poetry, handwritten; postcards sent to Benjamin Sr., Maud and Ethel Woodworth, between 1906 and ca. 1915; a copy of the newsletter "Trench Echo" from the 27th Battalion in Winnipeg from 1915; a dinner banquet menu/programme for the 56th Overseas Battalion dated 1916; a news clipping announcing the marriage of Ted and Minnie Davidson, ca. 1915; two pages of a June 7, 1888 publication of the "National Park Life" newspaper; an invitation to the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Ladies Auxiliay Annual Ball 1914; and a news clipping of a memorial article for Frederick Woodworth who was killed in action during World War I.

Notes: One page of a two-page handwritten poem is signed "E M W" [likely "Ella Maud Woodworth"].

Physical Description: 2 photographs : b&w prints ; 20.5 x 25 cm and 18 x 12.5 cm

History / Biographical: Simon Fraser (1776-1862) was an explorer who was involved extensively with the fur trade in Western Canada during the early 19th century. Fraser began his career in 1793 as a clerk and in 1801 he became a trading partner with the Northwest Company. While working for the company, Fraser participated in expeditions throughout the Canadian Rockies to establish trade relationships with local Indigenous populations. In 1808, Fraser and 23 men completed a 36-day expedition following what was mistakenly believed to be the Columbia River, which ended at Musqueam. The river was later named "Fraser River" in his honour by David Thompson. Following the conflict leading up to the Seven Oaks Massacre, Fraser moved to St. Andrews West to live with family, where he met and married his wife Catherine. The couple had 9 children together. In 1838, Fraser fought in the Upper Canada Rebellion, resulting in a knee injury which left him permanently disabled. Fraser died at the age of 86 in 1862, and was buried in St. Andrews West with his wife who died the following day.

Scope & Content: File consists of 2 photograph print copies: one of an original painted portrait of Simon Fraser, and one of an early photograph of the Banff Springs Hotel [predating a fire in 1926, after which it was rebuilt]. Items are later copies of original portrait and photograph [see "Notes"].

Notes: Dates given are based on likely dates of original portrait and photograph. Dates of copies held by the Whyte Museum are likely between 1940 - 1970 [no exact date given].; Simon Fraser portrait annotated on reverse side with cropping instructions and label for "Photo Engravers Electrotypers Ltd.", as well as stamp crediting B.C.
