A mother of pearl name plate is centred on the top of the lid. The box has a brass lock and other wire inlay. On the underside of the box are the marks “Fred Carey June 15 - 95” and “1898 New York” in pencil, and the name of Carey is written on the bottom seven times in different styles.

Twisted blue cotton cord handles are attached through small ivory rings covered with stitching and making a small hole at each side of the bag.
