- Maud Grice-Hutchinson, of Cheltenham, England, and her husband, Reverend Canon Rowan E. Grice-Hutchinson, lived in Sorrento, BC, from 1913-1916 and again from 1919-1923. During World War I the couple returned to England where Maud served as Commandant for the veteran's hospital on her father's estate, Boddington Manor (Gloucester, UK), and Rowan as a Military Chaplain. Maud and Rowan moved back to Boddington permanently in 1962 when she inherited the estate. A mountain at the north-west end of Shuswap Lake (between the Anstey and Seymour Arms) was named Mount Grice-Hutchinson in 1978 after the Reverend. On July 9, 1936, Maud, her sister Violet Seeley, and Mary Diana Buckle arrived in Canada after having taken a ship over from Liverpool. They stayed at the Kananaskis Ranch from 4-7 August before starting on their trip. They had four guides and twelve pack horses to make the 300 mile (483 kilometer) trip to Jasper. Notes about the trip written by Maud later mention locations like the Red Deer River and White Rabbit Pass before arriving at the Saskatechewan River. After that, she names the Snow Dome Glacier, the Columbia Icefield, and Nigel Pass before arriving in Jasper. The four guides in her notes are named Edie Rowe, Edie Fraser, Smoky, and Chet [possibly Chet Ogan, a guide who worked for the Brewster family out of the Kananaskis Ranch in the 1930's].

- Jean Alexandra Hembroff was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on April 5, 1908 to Walter B. Hembroff (d. 1945) and Sarah Jane Hembroff (d.1952). Jean was accepted to the MacPhail School of Music and Dramatic Art at the University of Minnesota, from which she graduated in 1927. She returned to Winnipeg to begin teaching courses in speech arts and drama. To establish herself, she first volunteered as the "story lady" at the Williams Avenue Public Library and quickly became known as an excellent speaker sought by many different organizations. She taught at St. Mary's Academy and the Evening Institute at the University of Manitoba, as well as offered private sessions. Many of her students used the skills they learned from Jean as they entered radio, television, politics, and business. Jean was also very active in organizing and adjucating Speech Arts festivals in Manitoba, often going to inaccessible places to give workshops. Her teaching, broadcasting, adjucating, coaching, and speaking career spanned more than 50 years. Jean was hired by the Canadian Pacific Railway's promotions manager to give presentations and broadcast interviews across Canada and the United States. In 1937, Jean joined the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies and participated in their summer trail ride in the same year. For that year's issue of the Trail Rider's Bulletin Jean wrote an article - and became the first woman to ever do so. In 1938, during her lecture titled "Trail Riding in the Rockies" on January 18, 1938 at the Royal Alexandra Hotel, Jean met John David (Jack) MacDonald. Jack and Jean were married on June 18, 1938, and the couple had one son, Bruce Walter James MacDonald (August 28, 1946-August 25, 2016). Jean participated in several trail rides with the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies and the Sky Line Trail, and produced articles reflecting her experiences. Jean loved to travel and visited places all around Canada and the United States, Borneo, Tangier, Montevideo, Stockholm, New Delhi, and Tonga. At the age of 102, Jean passed away on February 2, 2011 and is buried in Winnipeg.

- History / Biographical
- Additive Colour Screen Plates, first theorized by James Clerk Maxwell in 1861, were the first forms of colour photography. Maxwell’s original process involved printing the same black and white image through different coloured screens onto transparencies and then projecting them overlapped in order to create a single full-colour image. In 1868 Louis Ducos du Hauron expanded on this method by placing a screen made up of microscopic coloured stripes in front of a light-sensitive emulsion before exposing it to light. During exposure, the colours in the screen attached to the developing picture so when viewed back through the screen in a projector the image appeared fully in colour. Neither of these methods were commercially popular during the 19th century since black and white processes were cheaper and more widely available. In 1907 the Lumiere brothers introduced the Autochrome process to wide commercial success. The Autochrome process involved a mix of tiny potato starch grains dyed green, orange-red, and blue-purple that were mixed thoroughly and applied to a glass slide coated in a sticky varnish that held the grains in an evenly-distributed layer. The grains were laminated into the varnish to make them smaller and more transparent, and then the whole thing was sealed with another layer of waterproof varnish. The entire process could be done by machines, which made the slides cheap to produce, easily available to the public and opened up the process to amateur photographers. Photographs developed on Autochrome plates created soft images with relatively natural colour rendering, making them popular with artists and photojournalists. Autochrome plates (which came to refer to all colour screen plates regardless of manufacturer) created one-of-a-kind positive images and required long exposure times. Once an image was complete, it had to be quickly covered with either a strong coating of varnish or another slide of glass and then sealed along the edges with binding tape. Because silver is an element of the sticky base varnish that holds the dyed grains, if moisture was allowed to access the image the layers of varnish could ripple or tear away from the glass, or the dye could bleed or fade. The silver base is highly sensative to oxygen and if improperly sealed images could begin to "mirror," a process in which the exposed parts of the slide become uniform and shiny, obscuring the image. Because of the random distribution of dyed colour grains throughout the image and the lines created by laminating those grains into the base varnish, Autochrome transparencies are often mistaken for hand-painted coloured slides. Autochrome can be identified by looking closely for small dots of colour in all parts of the image, rather than the solid blots of colour found on hand-painted slides.

- File pertains to photographs - mostly prints, also negatives and one glass slide - of the Mount Logan Expedition of 1925. Photographs of the Mount Logan Expedition were mainly produced by H. F. Lambart; also some by A. H. MacCarthy. All images are housed in the original brown envelopes used by the ACC and contain typed notes on the exteriors. Topics include: Going into our first camp on the bars of the Chitina River being a half days run from "Rush Pound," where we stopped and had lunch on the way in ; Packing up at Brysons, being the old camp ground of the Surveys (Barny Bryson) and from which point a trail leads out of the valley of the Chitina (rising 3000 ft) and leading to the head of the Young Creek. MacCarthy took this trail coming in coming out last summer after the reconnaissance. This is the 4th. camp out from McCarthy the next 16 miles to Short River ; Short river Camp, 5th camp out from McCarthy and only 7 miles out from Hubricks. Mountain in back on other side of Chitina Valley. Crossed Clear Water, Canon and Short river before reaching this camp ; Eastward up the valley of the Chitina Valley Tree islands and the morain covered toe of the Chitina Glacier showing. Hubricks Camp near point shown on left, just showing ; The Chitina Valley below Hubrick's Camp distant horizon being the toe of the Chitina Glacier. Mt. Logan would be, if visible, direct centre looking up Chitina Gl. ; Panorama taken from a point on the Chitina just off the N.W. corner of the Chitina Glacier toe, at an old Trig Sta. which seemed to be part of old base line. Shows the range on the south side of the Chitina Valley and the last straight down the valley of the Chitina ; All a little blurred as focus in error set at 15 yrd. Panorama of the range on the south side of the Chitina River Valley, from a point 1/3 mile east of Hubrick's Camp. Logan in distant centre in 433 & 434 [452 & 453] ; Laing in front of his dungeon (Pup Tent). The afternoon's careful inspection of Logan equipment ; Survey tripod on the bars below toe of Chitina Glacier to N.W. line of bace line poasts leading away to W. No end of base mark showing ; From the summit point of the Terminal morains of the Chitina Glacier looking straight west down the valley and showing the trench between the glacier and the N. wall of the valley up which the trail lead to the last point of horse transport, "Trail End" ; The group on the ice in front of "Trail end Camp" ; Ice of the Chitina completely covered with debris, from the shore line on the N. side looking forward to Chitina Point ; Walsh camp at the end of the Chitina Point, the side of an old survey camp of 1913, facing a stretch of water directly off the point, the junctions of the Chitina and Walsh Glaciers ; Group, as per preceding negative showing drift and exposed dry wood on beech, old shore of long since sunken lake. Hall [extreme] right. centre L to R Carpe, MacCarthy Foster ; These pictures taken towards the south over a sea of clouds obscuring the Seward and Malaspina glaciers and all the surrounding peaks leaving the top of St. Elias alone sticking up. The peak of King Mt. not more than 5 miles distant all showing, the sea of clouds showing beyond. Note the South butress of King and long ridge leading from teh peak to the right being the south wall of the King Glacier. King Col, is just below the ridge facing the picture and decending from the summit in a jagged arete ; This the only photograph I have of "Windy Camp" (16800) taken looking northward up the ice slopes followed on the ascent. Left the S.W. spur of the Logan massif ; Plateau Camp at an elevation of 17500 ft approximately, is the camp from which Mt. Logan was climbed on the 23 of June. These pictures were taken on a clear morning and it is hard to explain the failure in the results obtained. The panorama shows the upper glacier plateau below the high summits of the massif. The photograph sweeps the northern horizon through about a half circle. Distant rangers shown are those of the walsh Glacier and west end of the glacier and mountain system between the base of Logan and Kluane Lake, 60 miles eastward.

Here the ice became so bad that the two sleds were left behind, cached a further amount of equipment, including stove and robe etc. & shouldered our loads for the remaining 30 miles into Hubricks Camp ; Portraits of all but Carpe, how he came to be missed unknown. Laing ; The making of two boats on arrival at Hubrick's camp on the 6th of July having originally been decided upon, now abandoned on acount of the condition of the party and the length of time to build (10 days) rafts in lieu of the boats finally decided upon. Two of these commenced July 8 and completed the 10th. and the journey started down the Chitina River at 1.30 P.M. July 11th. with desastrous results to one (MacCarthur, Foster, Carpe) and reaching Rush Pond with the other (Taylor, Lambart, Read) 12.30 midnight July 12, 60 miles by stream.

- File pertains to photographs - mostly prints, also negatives and one glass slide - of the Mount Logan Expedition of 1925. Photographs of the Mount Logan Expedition were mainly produced by H. F. Lambart; also some by A. H. MacCarthy. All images are housed in the original brown envelopes used by the ACC and contain typed notes on the exteriors. Topics include: Breakfast being prepaired by Andy Taylor in front of the tent at Rush Pond and before starting out on that hectic 32 mile trudge into McCarthy, being the closing act of the field activities of the Mt. Logan Expedition. Rush Pond left with all gear left behind (protem) on July 12 at 10.10 A.M. arriving McCarthy 1.30 A.M. July 13 ; The first negative of close up in camp by H.F.L. other by Taylor of first relays to the top of the Quartz Ridge, 1000 feet above the Cascade camp site ; The process by which, with a 700 foot alpine line we were able to get one of the hand sleds to the summit of the quartz ridge from the Cascades camp below ; Cache and group at the top of the quartz ridge. This point being about 1000 feet above Cascades ; This is a photograph looking straight down the Ogilvie glacier from a point 1000 feet above its head. Its confluence with the Logan is distinctly seen ; A mere spot in a world of ice, cascades camp as viewed from above from the summit of the Quartz Ridge. This photograph shows well the base of the cascades and the character of the glaciers entering the head of the Ogilvie Gl. ; From a rock ridge where Morgan hand enticed me one afternoon we got this of the top of St. Elias appearing through the clouds. - History / Biographical
- The Mount Logan expedition was a joint mission between the Alpine Club of Canada and the American Alpine Club that took place in 1925. The expedition was led by A. H. MacCarthy, who had participated in the first accent of Mount Robson in 1913, and officially began in February, 1925 when the team, using horses and dogs to pull sleighs, cached supplies along the route. The ascent started on 12 May when they left the town of McCarthy, Yukon and the summit was reached on 22 June. The Mount Logan expedition was noted as being extremely difficult due to cold temperatures and violent storms. No members of the team were lost.

Box 6/6 contained slides labled as "duplicates," upon comparison they were determined to be originals and added to the order; they now make up PS-232 to PS-254. This listing was originally part of a larger entry (containing textual records and photographs) for the Mount Logan expedition.

Lantern slides pertain to the Lake of the Hanging Glacier area; Columbia Icefield; various views in and around Banff, Yoho, Glacier, and Jasper National Parks; Mount Robson area. Subjects also included Stoney First Naitons peoples. PS-189 is the only hand-tinted slide in this range - it is marked as being made by the Canadian Pacific Railway. There are 2 individual panes included at the end of the range; one is labeled "ACC Pack Train Field BC" and the other "Waterfowl Lakes." They have no accompanying photograph. File accompanied by a typed text paper dated 18 November 1926 and signed by Louis S. Crosby in regards to 63 slides recieved from Byron Harmon to be returned in good condition.
