Abstract: Published shortly after Canadian confederation of 1867, the Canadian Handbook was written to commemorate the new European understanding of Canada. The publication is comprehensive, and discusses but is not limited to the following topics, confederation, geology, trade, population, education, agriculture and minerals. The book serves to tell the story of a new united Canada which had not previously existed in the European psyche. Serving as both a handbook and condensed history, the book offers readers a glimpse into early Canada, as well as colonial settlement.
