Interior of desk back has cubbyholes and two deep, narrow slot drawers. Also a hidden drawer centre top. Secret drawer has a letter inside from Catharine's mother dated October 7, 1938, part of it reads: "I am going to find out about the age of the desk 150 years anyway & most likely older. My father bought it 60 years ago, from the old Derby house in Salem, where Lafayette stayed & the desk was old then." Letter now in Archives M36/164.

- A long narrow fabric strip with seven pockets formed along its length. Each pocket is made of neatly handsewn pieces of differently patterned silk swatches, with the bottom pocket made of velvet. The outside of the case is covered with linen canvas covered completely with very fine cross-stitch designs of the alphabet at the top and patterned bands of flowers with a tree, bird, cat, and dog, and the initials 'ML' at the centre in traditional needlepoint sampler manner. The edges of the case have been bound with turqoise silk ribbon. There is a two-layered semicircular black wool flap at the bottom, and an arched silk-lined red velvet flap at the top.
