A very thin knife with ebony handle like rifle butt and wooden scabbard wrapped with bands of black cord. (a) dirk, short, narrow, pointed steel blade with reverse curve to sharp shoulder on under side of hilt. Small carved ebony handle shaped like a rifle butt, with carved band of scallops and diamond shapes around middle. Two decorative notches carved across butt of handle. Note: handle checked along length. (b) scabbard, small, simple and straight, carved of two pieces of wood with triangular opening at mouth. Top carved to curve downward on one side to accommodate shoulder of blade. Girded with four double bands of finely braided cord, evenly spaced along length, and a fifth triple band at top beneath shoulder. Note: top fibre hands loose and slide up and down.

Totally bamboo, almost square-topped stool with four bamboo corner legs. Double bamboo frame near base and triple bamboo frame at top are cut out to shape and stretch around corner legs. Each stalk which stretches as above is a single bamboo stalk having two ends which are pegged together. Pegging through legs supports stretch frame. Vertical pegs through top three frames extend into holes drilled in seat top, which is a varnished, darker bamboo. Seat top secured with pegs and glue but glue and bamboo have dried with climate and one of four seat top edges is loose.

A set of two commemorative pins from Japan plus a chain fob from which to suspend them when worn. (a) pin of the Second Class of the Order of the Sacred Treasure, small round silver pin with white enamel arms radiating from a round blue enamel silver bordered centre with a small silver scallop edged circle in the middle. A chain of red enamel spots encircles the central portion of the pin, two sharp bent prongs and two small rings soldered to the back of the pin, with a separate ring through the top for suspending. (b) pin of the Third Class of the Order of the Rising Sun, small gold pin with a white enameled starburst radiating from a solid round red enamel centre bordered in gold. Hangs from small flower pendant with three green enamel leaves and three enamel purple blossoms, the whole is suspended from a white bow with red borders attached through a stud button. This pin is contained in a square brown leather jewellery case (bb) with hinged lid lined in white velvet and satin. (c) lapel pin fob for suspending the two pins, gold circular lapel button attached to two closely linked chains which are attached to a gold straight pin at the other end. Two small rings at the bottom of each to hold the pins. Description
Japanese, finely decorated black lacquer writing case, for letter pads, sumi ink and brush, lift off lid, 4.5h. Inset picture in gold of an eagle perched on pine tree looking down into water. Inside of lid brown lacquer dragonfly above barley leaves. Tray, black with gold, pictures of traditional dress, ceremonial hat, 2 hats, shoe, musical instrument, hand drum. 8.0 deep, brown coloured. Pull out drawer 3.0 deep, for drawing pads. Brown gold lacquer has metal pull handle. Exterior sides decorated with gold cherry blossoms and petals, pine needles, maple leaves. All very fine craftsmanship. Original documentation stated contents as: 10 pieces of material, 5 purses, 1 small scroll picture, 12 postcards, 1 stationery box, envelope containing letter and 2 photographs of writer's children: Contents: 102.04.0395 a,b doily set, paper, 105.02.0124 a-j cards, calling 1/2; 105.02.0125 a-e prints, photographic,105.02.0126 a-g postcards, 105.02.0127 note, written, 105.02.0128 a,b card holders, 105.06.0048 stationery set, 107.01.0143 scroll, miniature.
