History / Biographical
Maud Grice-Hutchinson, of Cheltenham, England, and her husband, Reverend Canon Rowan E. Grice-Hutchinson, lived in Sorrento, BC, from 1913-1916 and again from 1919-1923. During World War I the couple returned to England where Maud served as Commandant for the veteran's hospital on her father's estate, Boddington Manor (Gloucester, UK), and Rowan as a Military Chaplain. Maud and Rowan moved back to Boddington permanently in 1962 when she inherited the estate. A mountain at the north-west end of Shuswap Lake (between the Anstey and Seymour Arms) was named Mount Grice-Hutchinson in 1978 after the Reverend. On July 9, 1936, Maud, her sister Violet Seeley, and Mary Diana Buckle arrived in Canada after having taken a ship over from Liverpool. They stayed at the Kananaskis Ranch from 4-7 August before starting on their trip. They had four guides and twelve pack horses to make the 300 mile (483 kilometer) trip to Jasper. Notes about the trip written by Maud later mention locations like the Red Deer River and White Rabbit Pass before arriving at the Saskatechewan River. After that, she names the Snow Dome Glacier, the Columbia Icefield, and Nigel Pass before arriving in Jasper. The four guides in her notes are named Edie Rowe, Edie Fraser, Smoky, and Chet [possibly Chet Ogan, a guide who worked for the Brewster family out of the Kananaskis Ranch in the 1930's].
Scope & Content
Fonds consists of 83 lantern slides and accompanying lecture notes. Topics include pack trains, camps, activities and scenic views, Banff and Jasper National Parks and areas. Documents include a handwritten script made by Maud Grice-Hutchinson to accompany the slides and a photocopied copy of the Brewster family's Kananaskis Ranch guestbook page 63, dated August 1936.
Notes
Not all images were taken by Grice-Hutchinson - some bear manufacturers' labels and were most likely purchased after the pack trip.

History / Biographical
Lantern slides were used for education, entertainment, and administrative purposes. Lantern slide shows were held in the home, classrooms, public halls, and theatres. Lantern slides were manufactured by companies to be sold in sets in order to tell a certain story, or made by individuals for their own purposes. These homemade slides could be made with a variety of techniques, but the easiest was to write (or draw) directly onto a piece of glass and seal it with a transparent lacquer or another piece of glass and then wrap the edges in binding tape. Another simple homemade method was to print text onto cellophane or translucent wax paper with a typewriter and then place the slip between 2 panes of glass and bind it. This was a useful method for churches in possession of magic lanterns to display lyrics to hymns and carols, as well as specific Bible verses, on the wall during a sermon or other community events. Homemade slides were also useful for administrative purposes. By writing directly onto a piece of glass with India ink or special slide paint, organizations could display figures, expenditures, or any other pertinent details during meetings.
Scope & Content
Fonds consists of 49 lantern slides; subject matter pertaining to psalms, Christmas carols, financial report on the Banff Red Cross. There are 3 slides included that contain either typed or handwritten text on top of coloured photographs: PS-39 consists of a Christmas carol printed over an areal photo of the Chateau Lake Louise. PS-48 is a hand-written pslam over a photo of an unknown island. PS-49 is a typed Christmas carol over a photo of an unknown mountain peak.
Notes
A square cardboard box was also included with the slides, it held single-pane hand-written slides pertaining to Red Cross and church inventories, expenditures, and other administrative details. The box has what is probably a manufacturer's label on the lid, almost the entirety of which is obscured by a thick piece of brown tape that was used to hold the box closed (the tape was broken prior to accession). Written on the tape is "Cover Glasses 01" in pencil. The box was in poor condition with many joints broken, it was discarded. Donation also included a magic lantern, held in artifacts (105.05.1036 a,b).

Conservation
PS-36 glass panes replaced. Slide text is printed on transparent plastic, this slip was removed from the original broken glass housing, digitally scanned, and placed in 2 new pieces of glass. No binding tape available, the new slide is held together with flat string and placed in non-acidic paper.
PS-26 to PS-35 are single panes of glass with hand-written text that require delicate cleaning.
All glass panes, not including the text sides of PS-26 to PS-35 were cleaned.

History / Biographical
Lantern slides were used by government agencies to illustrate holdings and acquisitions during meetings. This could take the form of text-based or photographic images. This collection contains photographic images of mainly Jasper National Park that were taken by the Department of the Interior or the Department of Extension, University of Alberta. The Department of the Interior was founded in 1873 and was responsible for settlement and development of western Canada until 1936. This included surveying what is now Alberta and then promoting and settling the area through a massive immigration campaign. Coloured lantern slides would have been utilized in this capacity to realistically showcase the Rocky Mountain region to officials in Ottawa. The Department of Extension at the University of Alberta was founded in 1912 with the aim of sharing the University's collections and knowledge with rural communities throughout Alberta. Based out of Edmonton, the Department of Extension used travelling libraries, magic lantern shows, and public lectures to accomplish this goal. It is still an active department at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.

History / Biographical
The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) was officially formed in Februray, 1881, to construct a railroad that would link the eastern provinces with British Columbia, a key component of the Canadian Confederation of 1867. Headed by William C. Van Horne as General Manager, the railroad arrived in the Canadian Rockies in 1883 and a siding was established just east of present-day Banff. When railroad workers discovered a natural hot spring on the south side of the Bow River, Van Horne ordered the construction of a hotel that would house visitors brought in by train to visit the springs. Construction of the Banff Springs Hotel finished in 1888 and joined a handful of CPR hotels throughout the Rocky and Selkirk Mountain ranges. The popularity of the hot springs and surrounding area led to the formation of a national park and to the town of Banff. After construction of the railway had completed, the CPR continued to survey and document the Rocky Mountains alongside federal agencies like the Department of the Interior and private outfitters. Utilizing coloured lantern slides the CPR was able to showcase the mountains as both tourist and settlement destinations. Magic lantern shows of these slides could be used for administrative purposes by the company to showcase land holdings and investments or in public shows as advertisements of the new railway.

Physical Description
40 photographs : col. slides ; 10 x 8.2 cm Transparencies mounted as lantern slides.
History / Biographical
While most lantern slides are made of images that have been drawn, painted, printed, or developed directly onto a pane of glass, this collection consists of cellulose-based transparencies that have been placed within a paper border and secured between 2 panes of glass. Colour positive cellulose-based film first became available to consumers in 1941 when Kodak introduced Kodacolor print film, a process that involved taking photographs on black and white film and then developing them into full colour positives in a lab. In 1946, Kodak was able to simplify the development process with Ektachrome, which used a colour slide film and also made it much easier for photographers to develop their photos at home. Based on small notches cut into the edge of the films in this collection, these images were taken on Separation Negative 4133, Type 2, which was a type of black and white negative film produced by Kodak.

History / Biographical
Additive Colour Screen Plates, first theorized by James Clerk Maxwell in 1861, were the first forms of colour photography. Maxwell’s original process involved printing the same black and white image through different coloured screens onto transparencies and then projecting them overlapped in order to create a single full-colour image. In 1868 Louis Ducos du Hauron expanded on this method by placing a screen made up of microscopic coloured stripes in front of a light-sensitive emulsion before exposing it to light. During exposure, the colours in the screen attached to the developing picture so when viewed back through the screen in a projector the image appeared fully in colour. Neither of these methods were commercially popular during the 19th century since black and white processes were cheaper and more widely available. In 1907 the Lumiere brothers introduced the Autochrome process to wide commercial success. The Autochrome process involved a mix of tiny potato starch grains dyed green, orange-red, and blue-purple that were mixed thoroughly and applied to a glass slide coated in a sticky varnish that held the grains in an evenly-distributed layer. The grains were laminated into the varnish to make them smaller and more transparent, and then the whole thing was sealed with another layer of waterproof varnish. The entire process could be done by machines, which made the slides cheap to produce, easily available to the public and opened up the process to amateur photographers. Photographs developed on Autochrome plates created soft images with relatively natural colour rendering, making them popular with artists and photojournalists. Autochrome plates (which came to refer to all colour screen plates regardless of manufacturer) created one-of-a-kind positive images and required long exposure times. Once an image was complete, it had to be quickly covered with either a strong coating of varnish or another slide of glass and then sealed along the edges with binding tape. Because silver is an element of the sticky base varnish that holds the dyed grains, if moisture was allowed to access the image the layers of varnish could ripple or tear away from the glass, or the dye could bleed or fade. The silver base is highly sensative to oxygen and if improperly sealed images could begin to "mirror," a process in which the exposed parts of the slide become uniform and shiny, obscuring the image. Because of the random distribution of dyed colour grains throughout the image and the lines created by laminating those grains into the base varnish, Autochrome transparencies are often mistaken for hand-painted coloured slides. Autochrome can be identified by looking closely for small dots of colour in all parts of the image, rather than the solid blots of colour found on hand-painted slides.
