- Abstract
- The third volume in the First Nations Language Readers series--meant for language learners and language users--this collection presents eight Blackfoot stories told by Lena Russell, a fluent speaker of Blackfoot from the Kainai (Blood) reserve in southern Alberta. In contract with other Algonquian languages, such as Cree and Saulteaux (Ojibwe), Blackfoot is not usually written in syllabics, so these stories are presented in the Blackfoot language using the Roman alphabet, together with the English translation. The spelling system is based on the conventions of the International Phonetic Alphabet, and should be transparent for native speakers of Blackfoot as well as for linguists. The Reader includes a Blackfoot-to-English glossary containing all the nouns, verbs, adjuncts, etc. , found in the texts, as well as stress or pitch accents over the vowel or vowels which bear the accent. - Abstract
- Nunatsiavut, the Inuit region of Canada that achieved self-government in 2005, produces art that is distinct within the world of Canadian and circumpolar Inuit art. The world's most southerly population of Inuit, the coastal people of Nunatsiavut have always lived both above and below the tree line, and Inuit artists and craftspeople from Nunatsiavut have had access to a diverse range of Arctic and Subarctic flora and fauna, from which they have produced a stunningly diverse range of work. - A highly varnished painting of Boulder Pass. At the bottom of the image there is snow that sweeps up the right side of the image and caps a rocky cliff. The snow is quite yellow at the centre of the image but becomes shadowed and dark in the bottom right corner. A lower snow-capped cliff is in the lower left corner. It forms a pass between it and the cliff on the right. The sky is quite dark at the top of the image but quite cloudy and grey-yellow lower down at the centre of the image. The vantage point makes the viewer feel as if they are peering over the ledge of a cliff and that all that is visible is sky.
