- A collection of 18 medals belonging to Banff speed skater Stanley Johnson. The medals are pinned on a wood shield covered with faded black velvet. From viewer’s left, the medals are as follows:(a) is silver, round, and measures 2.8cm in diameter. The front has a relief of a head and neck of a Bighorn sheep; a ram with curling horns. Above the ram’s head is the word “BANFF” in raised printing, on the viewer’s left of the ram’s neck “WINTER”, and on the viewer’s right “SPORTS”. Engraved on the back of the medal, at the top, an arced “440 -YD SKATE” under that “1922”. On the bottom an arced “STERLING” and underneath it appears to say “BANFF” but is indiscernible.(b) is gold in the shape of a Maltese cross and measures 3.20cm square. There is a circular medal superimposed on the cross. In the middle is a relief of a speed skater in action; underneath the skater is a laurel wreath. Engraved on the back is “B.W.C.”, under that “SKATING”, under that “220” “SR”, under that “ -1923-” (between the “19” and the “23” is the solder point for the the circle on the front), and under that “1st”. On the bottom of the medal is bar over an “R” and a bar underneath.(c) is a silver medal; a bar pin (3.50cmx1.0 at its widest part), from which, suspended by a red and yellow ribbon looped through a metal ring, is a circular medal measuring 2.90cm in diameter. The bar pin has a scrolled top and a rectangular framed space in which “FIRST PRIZE” is engraved in italics. There is a hinged pin fastened by a metal clasp on the back of the bar pin. The suspended circular medal has a bound wreath of laurel leaves around the rim and inside the circle of leaves these words are engraved in a rimmed circle “EDMONTON - WINTER - CARNIVAL” and inside another rimmed circle in the middle “SENIOR” and underneath “ONE MILE”. On the back, on the top “Won by” is engraved in script and on the bottom “STERLING” and something indiscernable (a hallmark).(d) A gold six-pointed star (3.50cm) interspersed with maple leaves. There is a circlular medal superimposed on the cross. In the middle is a relief of a speed skater in action; underneath the skater is a laurel wreath. On the back “B.W.C., under that “SKATING” under that “880 Sr”, under that something that looks like“ -19 indiscernible-” (between the “19” and the indiscernible is the solder point for the the circle on the front) and under that “1st” underlined and ”-1924--” underlined. On the bottom of the medal is bar over an “R” and a bar underneath.(e) is silver, round, and measures 2.8cm in diameter. The front has a relief of the head and neck of a Bighorn sheep; a ram with curling horns. There is a rimmed circular medal dropped in and soldered. In the middle of the circle is a figure of a speed skater; underneath the skater is a laurel wreath. Engraved on the back “B.W.C.”, under that “SKATING”, under that “1 MILE”, under that something indiscernible (could be a scroll), under that “-1st-”, and under that “1924”. On the bottom of the medal is bar over an “R” and a bar underneath.(g) is gold, only three-quarters is a circle (2.40cm diameter) as there is a scrolled bottom. There is a beaver on top of a shield; engraved on the shield “EDMONTON - WINTER - CARNIVAL” under that “1923”. On both sides of the engraved shield there are maple leaves. Engraved on the back “2nd”, under that arced “SEN. 220YDS RACE”, under that “WON BY”. On the bottom of the medal something that looks like a star in a circle followed by a star (hallmarks).(h) is gold, only three-quarters of the medal is a circle (2.40cm diameter), as there is a scrolled bottom. There is a beaver on top an shield; engraved on the shield “EDMONTON - WINTER - CARNIVAL” under that “1923”. On both sides of the engraved shield there are maple leaves. Engraved on the back “-SEN-”, under that arced “440YDS. RACE”, under that “2nd”, under that “WON BY”. On the bottom of the medal something that looks like a star in a circle followed by a star (hallmarks).(i) is a silver medal measuring 3.0cmx2.50cm wide; a shield superimposed on three cutout scrolls on top and a cutout wreaths of leaves around the medal, with the crossed stems on the bottom. Engraved on the shield is “EDMONTON”, under that “WINTER”, under that “CARNIVAL”, under that “1923”. On the back is engraving “3RD”, underneath that “800 YDS RACE”, under that “WON BY”. On the bottom, viewer’s left, the word “STERLING” is imprinted.(j) an elaborately scrolled silver frame measuring 4.50cmx3.80cm wide, surrounding a rimmed circlular medal dropped in and soldered. In the middle of the circle is a figure of a speed skater; underneath the skater is a laurel wreath. Engraved on the back “EDMONTON”, under that “SKATING”, under that “CARNIVAL”, under that, “1924” under that, in script “Blatchford Cup”, under that “-1MILE-”, “WON BY” S. JOHNSON”. On the middle of the bottom ‘STERLING” and “925” and something indiscernible.(k) a silver Maltese cross shape (measuring 3.0cmx3.0cm ) with a superimposed circular medal soldered on in the middle. In the middle of the circle is a figure of a speed skater; underneath him is a laurel wreath. Engraved in an arc over the skater is “BANFF W.S. 1925”. On the back of the medal, engraved in the middle “2ND” and underneath “440YDS”; printed on the bottom “STERLING 925” and something indiscernible.(l) a gold Maltese cross shape (measuring 3.0cmx3.0cm ) with a rimmed circlular silver medal dropped in and soldered on. (q) an elaborately scrolled copper frame measuring 4.50cmx3.80cm wide, surrounding a rimmed circular copper medal dropped in and soldered on. In the middle of the circle is a figure of a speed skater; underneath the skater is a laurel wreath. Engraved on the back “EDMONTON”, under that “SKATING CARNIVAL”, under that, “1924” under that “Blatchford Cup” in script, under that “220YDS”, “WON BY” S. JOHNSON”. The medal is round with a bronze maple leaf at the centre on an enamelled Union Jack. There is a wreath of bronze maple leaves around the outer edge of the medal. A band around the edge of the Union Jack reads “British Empire Service League” with a banner at the bottom that reads “Canadian Legion”. The medal is engraved on the back “Frederick Brewster, Jasper Alta no. 31 Branch 1927.(b) circular bronze pin from the Canadian Legion. The outside band is marked “British Empire Service League”. The centre of the pin has a bronze maple leaf on on an enamelled Union Jack pattern with a banner beneath that is marked “Canadian Legion”. Pin has screw-on stud back.(c) pin measuring 1.6cm wide x2.1cm, cut out in the shape of a shield with an enamelled Union Jack under a white maple leaf at the centre containing the letter “G.W.V.”. (Great War Veterans). Pin is surmounted by a silver-coloured crown.(d) pin measuring 2.3cm in diameter with a round bronze-coloured back and the words “For Service at the Front” around the edge border. - One medal of order (a) (Order of Canada) and two lapel pins (b,c) (Order of Canada):(a) the medal of order is a six-pointed white enamel stylized snowflake design edged in silver. There is a silver maple leaf (signifying that it stands for Member of the Order of Canada) soldered onto the centre of the snowflake. The maple leaf is surrounded by a red enamel ring bearing the motto of the order “DESIDERANTES MELIOREM PATRIAM” (meaning “They desire a better country”) in silver lettering. The circle is topped by a crown (white, red, and turquoise) enamel simulating jewels edged in silver) of St. Edward, symbolizing that the order is headed by a sovereign. At the top of the snowflake badge there is a silver metal suspension ring. A grosgrain ribbon, white, bordered in red stripes similar to the Canadian flag, is passed through the ring and attached to a silver pin bar. The reverse side is plain silver except for the word “CANADA” and “1181” underneath, printed on the centre disc. Directly below on one of the snowflake points are some numbers and underneath that the word “RIDEAU”. On the top reverse side of the pin bar there is a horizontal hinged pin with a swivel-locking safety catch, underneath which “RIDEAU” is printed. The pin bar has an opening for the ribbon to pass through and two holes at the bottom where the ribbon is sewn to the pin bar with red thread.(a,b) The two small lapel pins (1cm high,1cm wide) are white enamel stylized snowflakes edged in silver with a silver maple leaf in the centre. On the back there is one small spike and one larger spike soldered onto the medal with a tie-tack style (spike and clutch closure attachment) pin closure. The medal and lapel pins are stored in a hinged black leatherette case lined in blue satin; the medal (a) rests in a depression, the lapel pins have no depressions for storage, the cover is lined in white satin, the letters “C.M.” in gold on outside lid.
