History / Biographical: Ray Wardell, 1922-1994, was an engineer at Banff, Alberta, Canada from 1948 until 1958, and lived at Oakville, Ontario until his death. Wardell worked on early construction at Mount Norquay ski area and rose to the position of Superintendent of Construction and Maintenance for the Banff Chairlift Corporation.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of unpublished report titled "Mount Norquay Memories, 1948- 1956" by Ray Wardell. Report is a chronological history of development at Mount Norquay ski area by George Encil's Banff Chairlift Corporation Ltd. Scope & Content: One file pertaining to correspondence regarding “Bugaboos: B.C. Government Correspondence Boulder Camp”. Proposed Conditions for CMH Summer Permit in the Bugaboos- numbers 1-25. Letter on yellow carbon from Canadian Mountain Holidays regarding the stoppage of the climbing school at Boulder Camp in the Bugaboos due to Parks Canada pressure. Letter from M. E. Goddard, Regional Manager of Ministry of Recreation and Conservation regarding Gmoser’s previous letter indicating at the Branch pressured him into closing the summer operations in the Bugaboos. Goddard indicates that people advertising summer climbing schools should be brought to ministry attention, and “you must have realized your presence there would end eventually…it was solely your decision to terminate your summer operations in the Bugaboos.”Sept 8, 1978. Letter to Milt E. Goddard criticizing the Parks handling of the summer operation in the Bugaboos, regarding the stoppage of use of the Conrad Kain Hut. Gmoser suggests that others are advertising climbing schools without qualifications are using the hut accommodation and asks to be heard by Parks officials. July 12, 1978. Letter from M. E. Goddard discussing the discontinued operation of the Mountain Climbing School in the Bugaboos, thanking him for his past operations and wishing them success in the future. June 28, 1978. History / Biographical: The Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies is a trail riding organization based in Calgary, Alberta. The organization was established in 1923 with the support of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The first ride was held in 1924, and annual summer trail rides and pow-wows attracted fifteen hundred members by 1929. Many notable residents of the Bow Valley, including members of the Brewster and Moore families, Catherine Robb and Peter Whyte, and Carl Rungius have participated in trail rides. Support from the Canadian Pacific Railway ended in 1961. As of 2020, the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies remains an active organization. Scope & Content: A typed text report on Banff 14 pages long - the text has been heavily edited throughout with white-out and additional pieces of paper glued overtop of written text. Accompanying the text are 26 images and 4 maps, two of which are hand-drawn as overlays of the others. The report follows the story of a family named West from Calgary visiting their cousins, the Cunninghams, in Banff sometime in the late 1960s, which is also when it is believed the report was written. It is unclear if the families are real or fictitious. The report describes in some detail the history of the area, features around town, environment, commerce, wildlife, and community and ends with a series of questions, presumably posed to students. The accompanying prints relate to the topics in the report and are numbered to correspond correctly - some prints have typed text notations attached either to the back or the front along an edge. Two prints show the town of Banff from the top of Tunnel Mountain and a Mylar sheet has been laid overtop of each with landmarks, streets, and buildings noted in blue ink. Contents of the images include the afore mentioned aerial views, the Administration Building grounds, shops along Banff Avenue (which clearly show shop-front windows, signs, cars, and peoples' outfits), the original Whyte Museum building, the Banff High School, the Cave & Basin cave and pools, various wildlife, and Banff Indian Days.

Notes: Some prints came from the Canadian Government Travel Bureau, as indicated either in the typed notations or stamped on the back of the print.

History / Biographical: Dr. Gerald Wright (1917-2007) grew up in Brecon, South Wales, and studied medicine in Wales and London, England, throughout the 1940s. He served in the British Army in the Royal Army Medical Corps from 1942-1946 in North Africa and Italy. In 1951 Wright moved to Lethbridge, Alberta, due to its close proximity to the Canadian Rockies, where he maintained a general practice as a member of the Hunt Clinic. He went on to serve as Chief of Medicine at St. Michael's Hospital and the Lethbridge Municipal Hospital until his retirement in 1988. Shortly after arriving in Canada he became a member of the Alpine Club of Canada and attended many annual camps, often as camp doctor. He also participated in ACC expeditions to Mount St. Elias (1967, unsuccessful), Mount Alberta (1967, successful as part of the Alberta Team), and Mt. Waddington (1969). He also successfully summited Mt. Robson on his third attempt at the mountain. Wright hiked extensively throughout Nepal, Switzerland, South America, and New Zealand in addtion to the Rockies. He was also a member of the Skyline Trail Hikers of the Canadian Rockies and was a founding member of the Castle-Crown Wilderness Coalition, where he served on the Board of Directors, helping to plan and lead many annual hiking trips.
