History / Biographical: Sidney Joseph Unwin, [1880?]-1917, was a guide and outfitter at Banff, Alberta. Born in England, Unwin returned, after serving with the volunteer cavalry in the South African (Boer) War, to his home in London, England for a brief period to work as a surveyor's clerk, and in the fall of 1904 he moved to Banff. Initially, Unwin worked for guides and outfitters Syd Baker and Jimmy Simpson. In the winter of 1905 he began his own trapline. In 1907, Unwin began work for Billy Warren and accompanied Mary Schaffer and Molly Adams on their expeditions to the Maligne Lake, Saskatchewan River areas.; After two years of working for Warren, Unwin began his own guiding outfit and in 1912, with the aid of his sister Ethel and brother Arthur, the Unwins established Unwin's Curios and Souvenirs. In 1914, Sid Unwin enlisted in the Canadian army and took up with the 22nd Battery (Howitzer), 6th Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery 2nd Division. In 1916 he saw his first action in France. He fought in the battle for Vimy Ridge, was injured May 3, 1917 and died on June 29, 1917 at the East Leeds War Hospital.

History / Biographical: Frederick Pilcher Jr., M.D., d.1954, and his son, Frederick Pilcher, were avid amateur photographers who visited Canada regularly. F. Pilcher Jr. made early use of Kodachrome in backcountry photography.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of: I. A selection of photographs by Frederick Pilcher Jr. taken on hikes and climbs, 1940-1947, some in the company of Leonard Leacock (V27/CD-1); II. History / Biographical: Ernest Deniston Garner, 1900-1989, was an artist, journalist, poet and miner at Canmore, Alberta, Canada and England. Garner was born and educated in England, coming to Canmore with his niece in 1928, where he resided until 1937. In addition to working at Canmore Mines, he became active in Canmore affairs as correspondent for the Calgary Herald and established the Canmore Times, a mimeographed local newspaper, ca.1931. Garner returned to England in 1937.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists primarily of reminiscences titled Memory Lane, 198-, 1 volume (137 pages). Item includes poetry and account of Garner's journey from England to Canada and life in Canada. Details pertain to life at Canmore from 1928 to 1937, work at Canmore Mines, newspaper business, community events, art tour through southern Alberta and travels in British Columbia. History / Biographical: Murray Adaskin, 1906-2002, was a musician, composer and professor. He was a violinist on the musical staff of Canadian Pacific, 1930-1941, and leader of a chamber group the Banff Springs Hotel Trio. He and soprano Frances James, 1903-1988, were married in Banff. From the late 1940s onward, Adaskin played, composed and taught extensively before moving to Victoria, British Columbia in 1973.

History / Biographical: The Banff School District No.102 provided elementary and secondary education for Banff and area from 1887 until 1994, when it was replaced by the Canadian Rockies Regional Division No.12. During the 1970s and 1980s the district assumed, in the absence of a municipal government, responsibilities for aspects of local government as well as school administration. After 1990, the district's responsibilities strictly pertained to public education.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists mainly of textual records in the form of minutes, 1895-1983; miscellaneous administrative files on school operations and local government, 1920-1979; legal and financial records, 1888-1979; assessment and tax rolls, 1901-1972, 19 v.; attendance registers, 1888-1986, 987 v.; an anniversary issue of the Banff High School by The Cascadian, 1913-1933 containing a brief history of the school and autographs; and Robert D. History / Biographical: Robert George Brett, 1851-1929, was a prominent physician, hotel-hospital owner, businessman and politician Banff, Alberta from 1883 until 1929. Brett was born in Strathroy, Ontario, son of James Brett and Catherine Mallon. He was educated as a physician at the University of Toronto (M.D., 1874), and practiced medicine at Arkona, Ontario. He moved to Winnipeg in 1880, where he helped found the Manitoba Medical College.; R. G. Brett moved to Banff in 1886, founding the Banff Sanitarium. In 1909 he established the Brett Hospital. Brett also had numerous other businesses and real estate in Banff (including the National Park Drug Store, the Sanitarium Bottling Co., the Bretton Hall Hotel, Lithia Bottling Co.) and elsewhere.; In 1878, Brett married Louise Theodora Hungerford, 1855-1935, of Waterford, Ontario. Of their five children, only two survived infancy, Reginald H. "Harry", 1879-1925, and Robert Earle, 1887-1912. Earle Brett was survived by Maidie (Stacpole) Brett, whom he married in 1910, and by an infant daughter. Dr. Harry Brett was married to Helen Brett, 1877-1964, who outlived the rest of her family by many years. Associated closely with the Brett family was Dr. Brett's nurse, Annie McLauchlin.; From 1881 to 1901, R. G. Brett was Conservative Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the North-West Territories, and from 1889 to 1891 he was president of the executive council. He was Lieutenant-Governor of Alberta from 1915 to 1925. He died in Calgary.
