- James Irvine Brewster, 1882-1947, came to Banff with his parents in 1888. While still boys, he and his brother Bill started guiding fishing parties and later formed an outfitting partnership. With silent partners Fred Hussey and Phil Moore, they established Brewster Brothers in 1904. Jim Brewster and Hussey left the business in 1906. In 1909, Jim returned to guide the business. Under his control, it became a major transportation supplier, Brewster Transport Company. Fern Brewster, 1902-1967, daughter of Jim Brewster and Lade Brewster (d.1915), was a sportswoman, businesswoman and homemaker. She was involved in the operation of Sunshine ski area and was a director of Brewster Transportation after her father's death. Fern Brewster's married names were Clarkson and Dooley. Adele (Dell) Brewster (Sibbald), 1896-1983, Jim Brewster's second wife, was also a director of Brewster Transportation.

James Irvine Brewster papers and photographs, before 1948 and ca.1959, consist mainly of professional papers and photographs relating to guiding and outfitting activities, and to Brewster Transport Company records, including Sunshine ski area records. Series includes correspondence, diaries, legal papers, Sunshine Lodge addition papers, Brewster house plans and other material. Correspondence is incoming and outgoing letters between Brewster and Hussey, clients, and associates regarding guiding and outfitting, real estate speculation and personal matters, etc. 1906-1907. Diaries pertain to guiding, hunting and horse trips, 1897-1901, 1904-1906; entries mainly record clients, territory covered and game observations and records. - Frederick Archibald Brewster, 1883-1969, was an outfitter and guide at Jasper, Alberta, Canada. Brewster was born in Kildonan, Manitoba and in 1888 moved with his family to Banff, where he received his education. He subsequently attended St. John's College, Winnipeg, Manitoba and Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, obtaining a B.Sc. in Mining Engineering. Brewster worked briefly as a prospector and in 1910 embarked upon a long career as an outfitter and guide, first with Brewster and Moore. He established operations in Jasper in 1912 and was responsible for important parties, including those of Samuel Prescott Fay and the United States Biological Survey. Brewster served with distinction in the First World War and was involved with mountain warfare training of the Lovat Scouts in the Second World War. He supplemented his outfitting business with a series of camps which doubled as ski lodges: Fred Brewster's Rocky Mountain Camps, and boat concessions.

- Forrest Oliver "Pat" Brewster, 1896-1982, was a trail guide, outfitter and businessman in Banff, Alberta, Canada. Pat was a native and life-long resident of Banff. As a boy, he was an active Boy Scout and, by age seventeen, was a big game guide. After serving in World War I, Brewster established the first permanent camp at Lake O'Hara for the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1926, he took over the Brewster Transport Company outfitting business from his brothers, Bill and Jim. In the 1930s, he became involved in skiing explorations in the Assiniboine, Skoki and Sunshine areas. Pat Brewster was active in community affairs and, in his later years, was an avid historian of the region. He published three books of reminiscences between 1975 and 1982.

- Andrew "Scotty" Wright, 1887-1960, was a national park warden, carpenter, guide and rancher at Banff and Morley, Alberta, Canada. Wright came to the mountains in 1905 after homesteading and worked for Banff National Park as a warden in the Bankhead, Spray River and Ghost River districts. He was employed in various other jobs related to guiding, construction, equipment maintenance and repairs between Donald, British Columbia and Banff during the 1930s and 1940s, as a camp foreman for the United States Army near the Columbia Icefield, 1942. Andrew "Scotty" Wright and Lillian Hunter Wright, 1890-1936, had two children, Mary, 1914-1968, and William (Bill) "Scotty", 1929-2003. Mary Wright Burles was manager at various times of Skoki Lodge, the Lake Louise Inn, Sunshine Lodge and the Bar C Ranch near Morley where her father often lived his later years.

- Gray Campbell, b.1912, was a Royal Canadian Mounted Police constable, rancher, writer and publisher at Banff and Cowley, Alberta and Sidney, British Columbia, Canada. Campbell served with the RCMP in Banff and Cowley districts from 1932 until 1939. He ranched in the Porcupine Hills area, ca.1948-1960, at the same time writing magazine articles on a number of subjects, including RCMP history.

- Police papers are primarily reports, statements and news articles concerning a RCMP case involving the murder of four police officers and the deaths of three fugitives near Banff in 1935. - Robert (Bob) E. Campbell, 1871-1965, was a teacher, guide and outfitter, politician and soldier at Banff, Calgary, Peace River and Victoria. Campbell was born in Ontario and taught school in Saskatchewan from 1893 to 1896 before coming to Banff to teach at Tom Wilson's request. Beginning in 1897, he worked summers for Wilson as a trail hand. He then guided major clients, forming Wilson and Campbell in 1902 and buying the business in 1904. Campbell became involved in the Calgary Grain Exchange in 1908 and became the provincial MLA for Rocky Mountain in 1913. After serving in WWI, he ranched, guided and wrote a book of reminiscences, "I Would Do It Again: Reminiscences of the Rockies."

- Mollie E. Smith Ross, ca.1860-1897, and Peter Murray Ross, ca.1863-1928, lived at Banff and Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Mary Emma Jane (Mollie) Smith was born in Jackson, Michigan, USA and came to Banff for health reasons, ca.1889. Among her friends in Banff were Anglican church minister Rev. F. Granville (Eric) Christmas, 1854-1931, and druggist Peter Ross. Mollie Smith and Peter Ross were married in 1892 by Rev. Charles W. Gordon and moved to Edmonton in 1893, where Ross continued in the pharmaceutical business and the couple raised a family. Rev. F. G. Christmas chronicled his admiration of Mollie Smith in a scrapbook that he later presented to her.

- Bill de Haan, b.1903, was a hotel worker, labourer and government worker at Banff, Alberta, Canada. De Haan came to Banff in 1944 after working across Canada. From ca.1950 to ca.1968, he worked for Banff National Park at Tunnel Mountain campground, the east park gate and the warden service equipment building. After 1968, de Haan was a volunteer at the government fish hatchery in Banff. An avid photographer, de Haan was a member of the Bow Valley Camera Club. He photographed wildflowers and warden cabins throughout the park.

- Howard Douglas, 1852-1929, was Superintendent of Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada from 1896 until 1910 and Commissioner of Dominion Parks, 1910-1911. Douglas was involved in acquiring buffalo from the Pablo-Allard herd for Canada. The round-up commenced in 1907 and was completed in 1912 with a total of 716 animals purchased. In 1910, Douglas was instrumental in organizing a hunt of old bulls on the reserve. The scheme was quashed by the Montana Attorney General

- Lawrence (Laurie, Larry) Allison Duncan, 1890-1978, was a photographer, businessman and collector at Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Duncan came to Alberta in 1908 with his parents, Thomas Henry Duncan and Elizabeth Jane (Gill) Duncan, who settled on a ranch at Okotoks. For a time, Laurie Duncan operated a photography business in Calgary, specializing in views of Calgary, Indians, ranching and the Canadian Rockies. He attended Alpine Club of Canada camps in the 1920s, after becoming a member in 1920 with his graduating climb of Mount President, 1919. He was active in professional photography into the 1930s. Duncan was self-taught in mineralogy, painting and photography and was active for over fifty years in the development of mining and petroleum interests in the United States and Canada. Larry Duncan was an avid collector of shells, gems, rocks, fossils and cultural artifacts.

- Bruno Engler, 1915-2001, was a mountain guide, ski instructor, photographer and film maker at Banff and Canmore, Alberta, Canada. Engler arrived from Switzerland in 1939 and initially worked as a mountain guide and ski instructor for the Canadian Pacific Railway, Sunshine ski area and for Deer Lodge at Lake Louise, Alberta. During the Second World War, he served as a mountain warfare instructor for the Canadian Army. Following the war, Engler worked as a free-lance photographer for the National Film Board and others; as coach of the University of Alberta Ski Team; and as a technical advisor, cameraman and actor for numerous movies made in the Banff area. Throughout his career, Engler worked as a still and motion picture photographer, both for the movie industry and for governments at all levels, as well as operating his own business, Alpine Films of Banff, Alberta.

- History / Biographical
- Edward Feuz Jr., 1884-1981, was a Canadian Pacific Railway mountain guide at Lake Louise, Alberta and Glacier and Golden, British Columbia, Canada. Feuz was the son of one of the first Swiss Guides brought to Canada by the Canadian Pacific Railway. He climbed at Field and Glacier House in 1903 with his father and guided during summers from 1905 to 1912, settling that year in the Edelweiss Village at Golden, British Columbia. Until his retirement in the 1950s, he accompanied the finest climbers and was involved in over seventy first ascents of peaks over 3048 metres.

- Fonds consists of photographs, 1911-ca.1958; professional papers, 1901-1957; letters, 1941-1961; scrapbook, 1923-1972; and newsclippings, 1969.
- Photographs pertain mainly to mountaineering trips and climbs, mainly led by Edward Feuz Jr. in the Rocky and Selkirk Mountains, and includes many first ascents. Many photographs were taken by clients who sent copies to Feuz. Photographs also pertain to clients, associates and friends, Lake Louise Chalet and Chateau Lake Louise, Lake Louise area, Feuz homes at Edelweiss and Golden, and scenic views in the Rocky and Selkirk Mountains. Negatives are largely unidentified. Original colour transparencies by Edward Feuz, ca.1950-ca.1976, pertain to trips and scenic views in the Rocky Mountains. ; Professional papers include: Feuz's fuhrer-buch (guidebook) containing his certification as a Swiss Guide and testimonials from clients in Switzerland and Canada, 1901-1957; certificate of life membership, Alpine Club of Canada, 1947; and records of climbs re the Chateau Lake Louise, 1913-1930. Letters, scrapbook and clippings all pertain to Feuz's career, clients and mountaineering.

- The Galletly family were residents of Canmore and Banff, Alberta, Canada. David Drummond Galletly, 1838-1916, served as caretaker and guide for the Cave and Basin hot springs, 1897-ca.1910. Previously he worked on the construction of the Banff Springs Hotel and operated a hotel in Canmore. At the Cave and Basin, Galletly conducted tours and became known for his Scottish humor. Other family members included wife Ethel, daughters Viva and Ethel (Fulscher), son-in-law Fred Fulscher, and grandchildren Ronald and Adelina Fulcher.

- Malcolm Daniel Geddes, 1866-1927, was a journalist, publisher and mountaineer at Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Geddes was one of the founders of the "Farmers and Ranch Review" in 1904, and served as vice-president and editor until his death. He joined the Alpine Club of Canada in 1917, was active in ACC summer camps and served as Honorary Secretary from 1924 to 1926. Geddes was killed in a mountaineering accident on Mount Lefroy in 1927.

- Lillian Gest, 1897-1986, of Merion, Pennsylvania visited the Canadian Rockies almost every summer for sixty years, beginning in 1921. She was an active participant in "Off the Beaten Track" trips organized by Caroline Hinman between 1923 and 1933, in which young people camped, hiked, hunted and went horseback riding throughout the region between Mount Assiniboine and Mount Robson. During the 1930s, Gest attended hikes of the Skyline Trail Hikers of the Canadian Rockies and developed mountaineering skills at Alpine Club of Canada annual camps. Christian Hasler Jr. often served as her guide. Gest also belonged to the American Alpine Club, the Philadelphia Trails Club and the Lake O'Hara Trails Club. She spent considerable time in the Lake O'Hara region and wrote "History of Lake O'Hara" (1961), "History of Moraine Lake" (1970), and "History of Mount Assiniboine" (1979).
