- Description
- A large, folding, four-paneled screen with painted lake scene one side, patterned gauze material the other. Scene, painted on canvas with water based pigments, covers entire screen from side to side and top to bottom, tranquil lake with small sailboats and thatch-covered hut in the background, three white herons and water lilies in the foreground beside a tall stand of white orchid-like flowers and spikey leaves filling the whole right panel and half of the next panel. Back is covered with green gauze material printed with a stippled white background around silhouettes of large flowers, traces of faded red define some of the petals within the flowers. Screen is hinged by means of the canvas and backing fabric continuing from one panel to the next, and folds in accordion fashion. Screen framed along sides and bottom and top with wood which has been finished with reddish paint and graining technique, outer corners trimmed and protected with short strips of thin, embossed sheet metal, with flower blossom shaped tacks evenly spaced along the edge. Left side has additional strip in the middle. Each screen panel has wooden skeleton frame beneath fabric consisting of a single upright with cross braces down its length. Back of skeleton frame beneath gauze covered with black paper, beneath canvas with brown paper.

Backrest curves gently upward and is 45.0 cm. wide and 10.5 cm. high, ten 24 cm. high wooden spindles join armrest to chair seat. A metal rod is screwed into each side of armrest and fastened by a square nut on bottom side of seat to give greater support. Seat is saddle shape. The four turned legs are joined by two stretchers on each side. Two front legs are spool-shaped while back legs are plain. Two flat headed rods cross diagonally and are fastened to legs by square nut on one end. Metal rods are also used as reinforcements between seat and top stretcher on either side of chair. Note: A 3 cm. gap between planks on seat reveals tongue and groove technique for joining.
