History / Biographical: James Irvine Brewster, 1882-1947, came to Banff with his parents in 1888. While still boys, he and his brother Bill started guiding fishing parties and later formed an outfitting partnership. With silent partners Fred Hussey and Phil Moore, they established Brewster Brothers in 1904. Jim Brewster and Hussey left the business in 1906. In 1909, Jim returned to guide the business. Under his control, it became a major transportation supplier, Brewster Transport Company. Fern Brewster, 1902-1967, daughter of Jim Brewster and Lade Brewster (d.1915), was a sportswoman, businesswoman and homemaker. She was involved in the operation of Sunshine ski area and was a director of Brewster Transportation after her father's death. Fern Brewster's married names were Clarkson and Dooley. Adele (Dell) Brewster (Sibbald), 1896-1983, Jim Brewster's second wife, was also a director of Brewster Transportation.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of papers and photographs of James Irvine (Jim) Brewster, Fern Brewster, Dell Brewster and the Brewster family.; I. James Irvine Brewster papers and photographs, before 1948 and ca.1959, consist mainly of professional papers and photographs relating to guiding and outfitting activities, and to Brewster Transport Company records, including Sunshine ski area records. Series includes correspondence, diaries, legal papers, Sunshine Lodge addition papers, Brewster house plans and other material. Correspondence is incoming and outgoing letters between Brewster and Hussey, clients, and associates regarding guiding and outfitting, real estate speculation and personal matters, etc. 1906-1907. Diaries pertain to guiding, hunting and horse trips, 1897-1901, 1904-1906; entries mainly record clients, territory covered and game observations and records. Also includes articles and hand-drawn map by Brewster on hunting, 1903-1906. Includes 54 photographs pertaining to Brewster Transport after Jim Brewster period.; II. Fern Brewster papers and photographs, before 1967, includes mainly personal papers, correspondence, recipes, press clippings and photographs regarding friends and family, education, Jim Brewster's death and cooking. Correspondents include Carl Rungius, Les Peters, Charlie Beil and Fern Bedaux.; III. Dell Brewster papers, 1925-1967, pertain mainly to Jim Brewster's death. History / Biographical: Belmore Browne, d.1954, was a well-known artist who lived and worked at Banff and Seebe, Alberta, Canada and in the United States. Browne and Agnes Evelyn Sibley, 1882-1976, were married in 1913. In 1921, they bought property in Banff for a summer home and with their children, George, 1918-1958, and Evelyn, 1915-1994, travelled extensively throughout the 1920s and 1930s in pursuit of subjects for Belmore Browne's paintings. In 1946, the Brownes built a home near Seebe. Agnes Browne was a diarist for the family and much of her extensive writing centres around the career of Belmore Browne. Her daughter Evelyn consolidated the diaries in the 1980s. George Browne was also an artist.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists mainly of diary excerpts and transcripts, 1912-1913, 1921-1954; also includes a guest book, 1924-1956, posters, ca.1942, publications relating the story of Belmore Browne Peak, 1992-1993, and photographs, ca.1930, ca.1955, 1991-1992.; Diaries are mainly trip diaries pertaining to summer travels and family life in the Canadian Rockies, 1921-1933. Included are trips to Red Earth Creek, Skoki, Mystic Lake, Sawback Lake, Red Deer Valley, Hector Lake, Bow Lake, Kananaskis Valley, Cascade and Panther rivers, Elbow Pass, and other locations. Other diaries cover the years 1943 to 1954, years partly spent at Seebe until Belmore Browne's death. History / Biographical: Gray Campbell, b.1912, was a Royal Canadian Mounted Police constable, rancher, writer and publisher at Banff and Cowley, Alberta and Sidney, British Columbia, Canada. Campbell served with the RCMP in Banff and Cowley districts from 1932 until 1939. He ranched in the Porcupine Hills area, ca.1948-1960, at the same time writing magazine articles on a number of subjects, including RCMP history.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of manuscripts and research papers, 196-; police papers, 1932-1935; correspondence, 1937-1957; publications, 1933-1942; Hal B. Hammond papers and photographs, 1887-1888, 1938, n.d.; and research and personal photographs, 1887-ca.1937.; Police papers are primarily reports, statements and news articles concerning a RCMP case involving the murder of four police officers and the deaths of three fugitives near Banff in 1935. They discuss the roles of Campbell, Bill Neish, Tom Wallace and George C. "Scotty" Harrison. History / Biographical: Ronald Leslie Duke, 1912-1978, was a professional photographer at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Born in Calgary, Alberta, Duke was educated at Calgary, Banff and the University of Washington in Seattle, USA. After wartime service with the National Film Board of Canada, Ron Duke returned to Banff, where he worked in the photography business for the next thirty years. Here he formed a link in a business lineage of photographers, including George Noble, and was for a time an employee of Noble's corporate successors. After 1958, Duke worked closely with the Banff School of Fine Arts, photographing productions and providing documentary services. After sustaining considerable damage in a fire which destroyed Banff's Mount Royal Hotel in 1967, Ron Duke's business resumed and, in partnership with George Baracos, continued until retirement in 1975.

History / Biographical: Lawrence (Laurie, Larry) Allison Duncan, 1890-1978, was a photographer, businessman and collector at Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Duncan came to Alberta in 1908 with his parents, Thomas Henry Duncan and Elizabeth Jane (Gill) Duncan, who settled on a ranch at Okotoks. For a time, Laurie Duncan operated a photography business in Calgary, specializing in views of Calgary, Indians, ranching and the Canadian Rockies. He attended Alpine Club of Canada camps in the 1920s, after becoming a member in 1920 with his graduating climb of Mount President, 1919. He was active in professional photography into the 1930s. Duncan was self-taught in mineralogy, painting and photography and was active for over fifty years in the development of mining and petroleum interests in the United States and Canada. Larry Duncan was an avid collector of shells, gems, rocks, fossils and cultural artifacts.

History / Biographical: Eben Fulton Dunsmore, 1905?-1943, was a skier and powerhouse operator at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Born in Nova Scotia, Dunsmore came to Banff in 1909 with his parents, Thomas A. Dunsmore, 1876?-1966, and Jennie (Fulton) Dunsmore, d.1956. He also had a sister, Margaret, born ca.1910. An uncle, Arthur Wellesley Dunsmore, lived in Banff from 1910 until 1928. Dunsmore was married to Bessie Dunsmore at the time of his death at the age of thirty-eight. Fulton Dunsmore was an avid skier and hiker, and, with friends Peter Whyte, Cyril Paris and others, was one of the first to use the Mount Norquay area.

History / Biographical: George Encil (originally George Eisenschiml), b.1906, was a skier, ski resort owner and developer at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Encil was born in Czechoslovakia and emigrated to Canada in 1937. He settled in Banff after the Second World War. Encil was involved in mountain photography and cinematography. He built the Mount Norquay Ski Lift in 1948 and his company purchased the Sunshine Ski Lodge in 1952.

History / Biographical: Georgia Engelhard, 1906-1986, was a mountaineer, photographer and writer based at New York, USA and Switzerland. Engelhard was the first child of George Engelhard and Agnes Stieglitz and was the niece of Alfred Stieglitz and his wife Georgia O'Keeffe. Engelhard first visited the Canadian Rockies on a trip with the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies at the age of nineteen. She became a well-known climber, making thirty-two first ascents in the Rocky and Purcell Mountains. From 1936 on, Engelhard climbed internationally with Oliver Eaton (Tony) Cromwell, whom she married in 1947. The Cromwells lived in Zermatt, Switzerland for the last thirty years of their lives.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists mainly of Georgia Engelhard's mountaineering photographs pertaining to her climbing career in the European Alps, Canada and the United States, 1940s to 1950s. History / Biographical: Bruno Engler, 1915-2001, was a mountain guide, ski instructor, photographer and film maker at Banff and Canmore, Alberta, Canada. Engler arrived from Switzerland in 1939 and initially worked as a mountain guide and ski instructor for the Canadian Pacific Railway, Sunshine ski area and for Deer Lodge at Lake Louise, Alberta. During the Second World War, he served as a mountain warfare instructor for the Canadian Army. Following the war, Engler worked as a free-lance photographer for the National Film Board and others; as coach of the University of Alberta Ski Team; and as a technical advisor, cameraman and actor for numerous movies made in the Banff area. Throughout his career, Engler worked as a still and motion picture photographer, both for the movie industry and for governments at all levels, as well as operating his own business, Alpine Films of Banff, Alberta.

History / Biographical: Edward Feuz Jr., 1884-1981, was a Canadian Pacific Railway mountain guide at Lake Louise, Alberta and Glacier and Golden, British Columbia, Canada. Feuz was the son of one of the first Swiss Guides brought to Canada by the Canadian Pacific Railway. He climbed at Field and Glacier House in 1903 with his father and guided during summers from 1905 to 1912, settling that year in the Edelweiss Village at Golden, British Columbia. Until his retirement in the 1950s, he accompanied the finest climbers and was involved in over seventy first ascents of peaks over 3048 metres.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of photographs, 1911-ca.1958; professional papers, 1901-1957; letters, 1941-1961; scrapbook, 1923-1972; and newsclippings, 1969.; Photographs pertain mainly to mountaineering trips and climbs, mainly led by Edward Feuz Jr. in the Rocky and Selkirk Mountains, and includes many first ascents. History / Biographical: Lillian Gest, 1897-1986, of Merion, Pennsylvania visited the Canadian Rockies almost every summer for sixty years, beginning in 1921. She was an active participant in "Off the Beaten Track" trips organized by Caroline Hinman between 1923 and 1933, in which young people camped, hiked, hunted and went horseback riding throughout the region between Mount Assiniboine and Mount Robson. During the 1930s, Gest attended hikes of the Skyline Trail Hikers of the Canadian Rockies and developed mountaineering skills at Alpine Club of Canada annual camps. Christian Hasler Jr. often served as her guide. Gest also belonged to the American Alpine Club, the Philadelphia Trails Club and the Lake O'Hara Trails Club. She spent considerable time in the Lake O'Hara region and wrote "History of Lake O'Hara" (1961), "History of Moraine Lake" (1970), and "History of Mount Assiniboine" (1979).

History / Biographical: John Murray Gibbon, born in Ceylon (now known as Sri Lanka) in 1875-1952, was a writer, historian, musician and Canadian Pacific Railway publicity agent at Montreal, Quebec. Gibbon attended the University of Aberdeen where he received a scholarship to attend Oxford, where he graduated with a BA in Literature. He also studied at the University of Göttingen, Germany, and received some musical training in London. Gibbon received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the Université de Montréal in 1940. Following writing and editing work for British journals, he was approached in 1907 by the Canadian Pacific Railway to work on their European publicity program. In 1913, he was appointed general publicity agent in Montreal. For thirty years he promoted Canadian culture and the CPR He was responsible for the inauguration of the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies, Skyline Trail Hikers of the Canadian Rockies and Highland Gatherings. Gibbon was a prolific author and in 1921 became the founding president of the Canadian Authors Association (CAA), which he co-founded with Stephen Leacock, Pelham Edgar and B.K. Sandwell. The CAA lobbied for the protection of authors’ rights and went on to establish the Governor General’s Literary Awards in 1936. Gibbon received the award, in the non-fiction category, for Canadian Mosaic: The Making of a Northern Nation (1938), in which he argued against the American idea of a “cultural melting pot” that encouraged immigrants to cut ties with their culture of origin and assimilate into a homogenous society. Canadian Mosaic greatly influenced Canada’s immigration policies and multicultural attitudes throughout the latter half of the 20th century, particularly during the 1970s and 1980s.

History / Biographical: Hubert Unsworth Green, 1886-1962, was a police officer, naturalist, writer and national park warden at Dauphin, Manitoba and Banff, Alberta, Canada. He was also known by pseudonyms, Cecil Erskine and Tony Lascelles. Green came to Canada in 1905 and served with the Royal North West Mounted Police for twenty-five years. Much of his service was in the vicinity of Riding Mountain National Park, Manitoba, and there he became interested in wildlife research. While living in Dauphin, Green pursued this research, much influenced by Grey Owl. In the late 1930s, Green came to Banff and served as a temporary warden during the war, continuing as a special warden until 1956. He completed numerous wildlife studies of bighorn sheep, wolves, elk, wolverine and moose. In later years, he was engaged in the study of western Canadian history, particularly ranching.

History / Biographical: Margaret Elizabeth (Haskins) Greenham, 1881-1960, and Henry Warren Greenham, 1870-1953, were educators at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Margaret Haskins was born in England and was educated there and in Paris, France. She moved to Toronto, Ontario in 1908, teaching at Havergal Ladies College. She met English-born Henry Greenham in Banff; they married and taught at Pine Lake, Alberta before returning to Banff in 1919. From 1920 until 1947, the Greenhams operated a private school known as the Mountain School. They were leading organizers of cultural activities in Banff. Margaret Greenham was instrumental in the Banff Literary-Dramatic Society, the Merry-Go-Round Theatre for children and Banff Home Industries, a local crafts society.
