- A four-drawer secretary desk with drop front hinged and two pull-out supports for lowered front. All hardware in good condition. Governor Winthrop style. Secret drawer has a letter inside from Catharine's mother dated October 7, 1938, part of it reads: "I am going to find out about the age of the desk 150 years anyway & most likely older. - A Japanese samurai sword with dirk and brown scabbard. (a) sword, long curved steel blade attached by brass collar to hilt. Handle of wood with pebbled texture of sharkskin applied and showing through diamond shaped openings left in decorative wrapping with leather strips over handle. Metal cap at end of handle has low relief casting of gilded dragonfly on one corner, a small bronze insect is caught below the leather wrapping on either side of the handle. Rectangular sword guard at hilt has incised design and vestiges of gold painted design with a decorative opening either side. (b) dirk, short narrow blade set into metal handle with inlay of bronze in shape of stem with leaves and two seed pods on one side, fits into slit in top of scabbard. Note: part of inlay missing. (c) scabbard, hollow wood shaped to fit the blade and covered with finely textured brown leather. Slots on either side near hilt are banded at top with smooth black strip, wood?, horn?, and further down as well, where dirk enters. Ornate metal cap at tip extends in a strip 16.0 cm along back edge and 5.0 cm along front edge with narrow metal band around scabbard 10.0 cm from tip. Small gilded dragonfly on one corner of cap at tip.

- Unusual, squat coffee or hot-liquid pot. Open scroll base collar may function as built in trivet or space for burner. Main body slopes up and out to shoulder ridge. Shoulder has rounded slope towards pot rim over which lid rests. Pot sides plain brass but shoulders stippled dotted. Two upright brackets on shoulder hold single, flat, swivel handle which has been riveted with copper. Faceted spout has wing like decoration on top. Lid decorated with concentric dotted design and top knob. Chain leads from knob to brass loop on pot exterior but chain link has broken from loop end, previously mended pot, corrosion hole through pot chamber near base and at rim, lid rim corroded, has cause holes and rim breakdown, because of open areas mentioned, and, interior rusting is a nonfunctional piece now.

The patina is quite brown, and the scales of the dragon are clear cusps on most of its surface. The casting was made in six parts and then joined. The menacing dragon has mouth open, horns raised, claws extended. It would have been a difficult handle to use affixed to the burner, and has an enhanced decorative value.

- Ink set contained in a round top, trunk shaped container which sits on four, corner ball feet. Rounded top has round knob and is hinged for opening. Either end of container has relief lion's head with rotating ring through jaw. Bottom of box scratched "#251 MT ac", also stamped lion profile hallmark and "7". Interior of box is two chambers divided by flat sterling bar. In either chamber sits a bevelled, square sided glass. Each container has circular, ridged top with 1.0 cm. hole in centre. One of sterling tops is anchored permanently to glass well and has white powder residue inside it, other top is removable and is presumably for holding ink. Card inside box says "Old Sheffield Ink Box made in London. Circa 1810-1815."

- A long narrow fabric strip with seven pockets formed along its length. Each pocket is made of neatly handsewn pieces of differently patterned silk swatches, with the bottom pocket made of velvet. The outside of the case is covered with linen canvas covered completely with very fine cross-stitch designs of the alphabet at the top and patterned bands of flowers with a tree, bird, cat, and dog, and the initials 'ML' at the centre in traditional needlepoint sampler manner. The edges of the case have been bound with turqoise silk ribbon. There is a two-layered semicircular black wool flap at the bottom, and an arched silk-lined red velvet flap at the top.

- Description
- A tall varnished dark brown wooden box with heavy hinged lid sloping downward in front. Front of box is ornately shaped and bevelled with metal keyhole plaque on flat surface just below lid, and small hinged ring attached to metal back just above on lid. Exterior of box completely covered with veneer with marquetry of lighter veneer along edges of lid on top and outlining bevelled joints on front of box. Inside of lid parqueted with six pointed star inside oval of lighter and darker woods. Bent metal pin on lid fits into lock chamber when closed, insides have been removed.
