- Description
- A pair of slightly point-tipped, snowshoes with bent wood frames which are screwed together at the tail. They have two wooden cross braces and are strung together with water-resistant covered leather. The middle section has heavier webbing wound around both wooden pieces, and is interlaced with the finely woven toe and tail sections. The inserts for boots and the heel straps, which have a metal buckle, are made from what appears to be heavy harness leather. Each end of the boot attachment has hole on each side with a piece of leather threaded through, and wound around the webbing so that it stays on the base. It is knotted and rivetted. Each flap for the boot portion has six holes punched into it for threading the leather laces through for closing.(a) The toe crossbar, viewer’s right, has the outline of a ram’s head 2.7x3.5cm wide (hand) carved into the wood and stained a dark brown colour. The leather on boot insert, viewer’s right, 1.80x1.80cm wide also has the outline of a ram’s head cut into it. (b) The leather on boot insert, viewer’s right, has the outline of a ram’s head 1.02x1.80cm wide cut into it. There is a remnant of a label, gold and red-coloured with black printing, in the middle of the front crossbar and a white label with black printing ”LINES LIMITED D1578 74” on the underside of same crossbar.
