A miniature sterling silver spade with a grip handle and a flat square blade. There is a relief image of an eagle with outspread wings and banner beneath on handle. Writing on the spade blade: “Used by William Howard Taft, president of the United States, October 14, 1911 in turning the first spadeful of earth for the Panama Pacific International Exposition to be held in San Francisco 1915' with setting sun below and flowers and leaves framing the words. The back of handle is marked with hallmarks and “Sterling, Pat. appd for.”
