Collings chose an unusual view looking down towards the lake through a narrow, sinuous valley. The resulting “starburst” composition is contained by uncompromisingly vertical trees on either side.” -- “Charles John Collings, 1848-1931” Catalogue Raisonne by Linda Heath

Darkest tones have been restricted to a few branches and detail in a town across the lake, suggesting the late date although Collings brushstrokes do not follow the contours of his images.” -- “Charles John Collings, 1848-1931” Catalogue Raisonne by Linda Heath

Lights glowing from three buildings on the left suggest that it is late evening and shine upon the right-hand trees. The latter evidence is some overpainting.” -- “Charles John Collings, 1848-1931” Catalogue Raisonne by Linda Heath
