- Military issue gun for shooting flares. The gun is a top break single action, with a short, wide brass barrel and breech, steel trigger, hammer, barrel release and joining screws, and a rounded wooden grip. There is a steel ring at the butt end of the grip. The flare gun is marked: inside action: “697”; inside action on underside of barrel: “39697”; left side of barrel: “ ‘16”; an arrow; two stamps with crowns and numbers; on frame underneath barrel on left side: “WEBLEY & SCOTT LTD LONDON & BIRMINGHAM”; an arrow; “‘16”; “III”; same stamps as above; on frame underneath barrel on right side: “W&S” beneath a stamped logo; serial number “39697.”
