Topics include: Going into our first camp on the bars of the Chitina River being a half days run from "Rush Pound," where we stopped and had lunch on the way in ; Packing up at Brysons, being the old camp ground of the Surveys (Barny Bryson) and from which point a trail leads out of the valley of the Chitina (rising 3000 ft) and leading to the head of the Young Creek. MacCarthy took this trail coming in coming out last summer after the reconnaissance. This is the 4th. camp out from McCarthy the next 16 miles to Short River ; Short river Camp, 5th camp out from McCarthy and only 7 miles out from Hubricks. Mountain in back on other side of Chitina Valley. Crossed Clear Water, Canon and Short river before reaching this camp ; Eastward up the valley of the Chitina Valley Tree islands and the morain covered toe of the Chitina Glacier showing. Hubricks Camp near point shown on left, just showing ; The Chitina Valley below Hubrick's Camp distant horizon being the toe of the Chitina Glacier. Mt. Logan would be, if visible, direct centre looking up Chitina Gl. ; Panorama taken from a point on the Chitina just off the N.W. corner of the Chitina Glacier toe, at an old Trig Sta. which seemed to be part of old base line. Shows the range on the south side of the Chitina Valley and the last straight down the valley of the Chitina ; All a little blurred as focus in error set at 15 yrd. Panorama of the range on the south side of the Chitina River Valley, from a point 1/3 mile east of Hubrick's Camp. Logan in distant centre in 433 & 434 [452 & 453] ; Laing in front of his dungeon (Pup Tent). Hall [extreme] right. centre L to R Carpe, MacCarthy Foster ; These pictures taken towards the south over a sea of clouds obscuring the Seward and Malaspina glaciers and all the surrounding peaks leaving the top of St. Elias alone sticking up. The peak of King Mt. not more than 5 miles distant all showing, the sea of clouds showing beyond. Note the South butress of King and long ridge leading from teh peak to the right being the south wall of the King Glacier. King Col, is just below the ridge facing the picture and decending from the summit in a jagged arete ; This the only photograph I have of "Windy Camp" (16800) taken looking northward up the ice slopes followed on the ascent. Left the S.W. spur of the Logan massif ; Plateau Camp at an elevation of 17500 ft approximately, is the camp from which Mt. Logan was climbed on the 23 of June. These pictures were taken on a clear morning and it is hard to explain the failure in the results obtained. The panorama shows the upper glacier plateau below the high summits of the massif. The photograph sweeps the northern horizon through about a half circle. Here the ice became so bad that the two sleds were left behind, cached a further amount of equipment, including stove and robe etc. & shouldered our loads for the remaining 30 miles into Hubricks Camp ; Portraits of all but Carpe, how he came to be missed unknown. Taken the day after we got into Hubricks before the grand shave & clean up. 1 MacCarthy 2 Foster 1 Andy Taylor 3 H.F.L 1 Read 1 H.M. Laing ; The making of two boats on arrival at Hubrick's camp on the 6th of July having originally been decided upon, now abandoned on acount of the condition of the party and the length of time to build (10 days) rafts in lieu of the boats finally decided upon. Two of these commenced July 8 and completed the 10th. and the journey started down the Chitina River at 1.30 P.M. July 11th. with desastrous results to one (MacCarthur, Foster, Carpe) and reaching Rush Pond with the other (Taylor, Lambart, Read) 12.30 midnight July 12, 60 miles by stream.

Topics include: Breakfast being prepaired by Andy Taylor in front of the tent at Rush Pond and before starting out on that hectic 32 mile trudge into McCarthy, being the closing act of the field activities of the Mt. Logan Expedition. Rush Pond left with all gear left behind (protem) on July 12 at 10.10 A.M. arriving McCarthy 1.30 A.M. July 13 ; The first negative of close up in camp by H.F.L. other by Taylor of first relays to the top of the Quartz Ridge, 1000 feet above the Cascade camp site ; The process by which, with a 700 foot alpine line we were able to get one of the hand sleds to the summit of the quartz ridge from the Cascades camp below ; Cache and group at the top of the quartz ridge. This point being about 1000 feet above Cascades ; This is a photograph looking straight down the Ogilvie glacier from a point 1000 feet above its head. Its confluence with the Logan is distinctly seen ; A mere spot in a world of ice, cascades camp as viewed from above from the summit of the Quartz Ridge. This photograph shows well the base of the cascades and the character of the glaciers entering the head of the Ogilvie Gl. ; From a rock ridge where Morgan hand enticed me one afternoon we got this of the top of St. Elias appearing through the clouds. Below the surface of the King Glacier, end of the south wall of King Trench on left ; Large scale map of coast showing Cordova, McCarthy and Logan ; H.F.L. - "Ski Lift to Death" [alternately known as "Snowblind"], 1987, directed by William Wiard and starring Deborah Raffin, Charles Frank, Howard Duff, Clu Gulager, and Suzy Chaffee. Romance and intrigue at a Rocky Mountain ski resort ends with two derailed ski-lift gondolas hanging from a cable. An ex-gangster hangs in one of the gondolas while an assassin maneuvers to bump him off. Location filming in Banff National Park, including Sunshine and Lake Louise ski areas, the Sulphur Mountain Gondola, Banff Springs Hotel, and various downtown locations. Rumour has it that none of Banff’s ski areas wanted their lifts associated with a film called Ski Lift to Death, but the Sulphur Mountain Gondola was willing to use their gondola cars for the derailing stunt. Many Banff locals appear in nightclub and ski hill scenes.

Clark Kent travels to Smallville for his high school reunion and reconnects with childhood sweetheart Lana Lang; meanwhile Lois Lane goes on vacation in the Carribean. Computer programmer Gus Gorman is hired by tycoon Ross Webster to program a machine that will wipe out the entire coffee industry of Columbia, thus giving him the monopoly. This plot is foiled by Superman so Webster orders Gorman to replicate Kryptonite but, unable to identify a missing ingredient, he uses tar, which causes Superman to have a nervous breakdown and splits his identity. Overcoming this, Superman is eventually able to stop Webster's evil machine with Gorman's help and saves the day. Location filming mostly around High River and Calgary. Power plant scenes possibly from Milton Keynes, England. "Superman," 1978, directed by Richard Donner and starring Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Marlon Brando, and Gene Hackman. An origin story for Superman: born on the dying planet Krypton, he is evacuated by his parents and lands on a prairie farm, where he grows up as Clark Kent. After the death of his father, he recieves a psychic call from his deceased biological father and travels to the Arctic to build the Fortress of Solitude, where he trains and eventually becomes the famous caped hero. Meanwhile, Lex Luthor learns of a joint US Army and US Navy missile testing site and steals two missiles with the intent to blow up the San Andreas Fault. Luthor initially succeeds in this plan thanks to the use of Kryptonite on Superman, but as a result Lois Lane is killed, causing Superman to turn back time by flying around the Earth, allowing him to save her and stop the missile. Location filming for mountain scenes done in the Kananaskis Valley and prairie scenes around High River. One of the first motion pictures to film scenes on the newly-constructed highway into the Kananaskis Valley (Kananaskis Country). When a local resident encountered a flatbed truck carrying a U.S. guided missile on the highway (a prop for the movie), he was convinced the U.S. had invaded Canada.

Filmed at Bow Lake and at the Peyto Lake Lookout, the plot follows an outlaw trapper who steals a snowmobile from outside a North West Mounted Police outpost, prompting a Marx Brothers-style chase wherein the Mountie attempts to apprehend the outlaw on snowshoes, skis, horse, truck, and snowmobile, which he eventually does.
