History / Biographical: Belmore Browne, d.1954, was a well-known artist who lived and worked at Banff and Seebe, Alberta, Canada and in the United States. Browne and Agnes Evelyn Sibley, 1882-1976, were married in 1913. In 1921, they bought property in Banff for a summer home and with their children, George, 1918-1958, and Evelyn, 1915-1994, travelled extensively throughout the 1920s and 1930s in pursuit of subjects for Belmore Browne's paintings. In 1946, the Brownes built a home near Seebe. Agnes Browne was a diarist for the family and much of her extensive writing centres around the career of Belmore Browne. Her daughter Evelyn consolidated the diaries in the 1980s. George Browne was also an artist.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists mainly of diary excerpts and transcripts, 1912-1913, 1921-1954; also includes a guest book, 1924-1956, posters, ca.1942, publications relating the story of Belmore Browne Peak, 1992-1993, and photographs, ca.1930, ca.1955, 1991-1992.; Diaries are mainly trip diaries pertaining to summer travels and family life in the Canadian Rockies, 1921-1933. Included are trips to Red Earth Creek, Skoki, Mystic Lake, Sawback Lake, Red Deer Valley, Hector Lake, Bow Lake, Kananaskis Valley, Cascade and Panther rivers, Elbow Pass, and other locations. Other diaries cover the years 1943 to 1954, years partly spent at Seebe until Belmore Browne's death. Diary copies and typescripts have been annotated by Evelyn Browne.; Posters on alpine and wilderness survival, ca.1942, were done by Belmore Browne for the American military's Arctic Training Program.; Photographs are mainly photographic copies of paintings by Belmore and George Browne produced by Peter A. History / Biographical: Edward (Eddie) Clement Edgar Hunter, b.1926, is a skier, cinematographer, broadcaster, photographer and writer based at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Hunter began skiing in his native Edmonton, Alberta and became an expert ski racer in the mountains. He came to live in Banff with his parents in 1934 and was introduced to the Sunshine Ski area in 1936 by his uncle, Lloyd Hunter, who drove "Sunshine Suzie" for Brewster Transport. Hunter skied extensively in the Canadian Rockies, in Squaw Valley, California (1950) and competitively in Europe starting in 1954.; Hunter worked as a free-lance cameraman during the 1950s and later in early live television in Calgary at CHCT, later CFAC. After working as an official photographer for the 1960 Winter Olympic Games in Squaw Valley, he joined CFCN television. Hunter hosted a children's show, "Head Hunter," and a talk show, "Late Knight," while running a weekend ski program until 1965. Hunter held the photography concession on Sulphur Mountain, producing Polaroid shots for tourists and giving natural history talks.; Hunter worked mainly as a free-lance motion picture cameraman for the next twenty-nine years. His major accomplishments, while working for other companies, involved a cold-war era agriculture documentary in Russia (1959), a documentary about the Superman movies in Calgary and camera work for the official 1988 Winter Olympic Games film. Most of the film footage in this fonds was produced by Hunter during quiet times when he was not hired out to other production companies. Head Hunter Films produced a number of short promotional films for Air Canada, Canadian Mountain Holidays, Sulphur Mountain Gondola, Norquay Ski Area and others. "How the West was Skied" was mainly a compilation of footage Hunter filmed over the years, supplemented with early footage collected from other sources.

History / Biographical: Glen Boles (1934-2022), was born in St. Stephen, New Brunswick and moved to Calgary, Alberta in 1953. In 1957 he was persuaded to climb with co-worker and mountain guide Heinz Kahl, a native Bavarian. Heinz Kahl and English climber Brian Greenwood introduced Boles to more difficult climbing. Boles has climbed extensively in the Rockies, summiting over 400 peaks including many new routes and first ascents. He has also climbed in the Interior Ranges of British Columbia as well as the St. Elias Range of Alaska and the Alps. Boles is also an avid skier and spent 13 years on the Canadian Ski Patrol System and is a member of the Ski Friends program in Lake Louise.; Boles retired from the City of Calgary Waterworks Engineering Division in 1991 after thirty-five years employment. Boles and his wife (married in 1965) reside in Cochrane, Alberta. From his mountain experiences, Glen has developed an interest in photography, drawing and writing and has co-authored "The Climbing Guide to the Canadian Rockies-South" and "Place Names of the Canadian Alps" with Bill Putnam and Roger Laurilla.

History / Biographical: Maud Grice-Hutchinson, of Cheltenham, England, and her husband, Reverend Canon Rowan E. Grice-Hutchinson, lived in Sorrento, BC, from 1913-1916 and again from 1919-1923. During World War I the couple returned to England where Maud served as Commandant for the veteran's hospital on her father's estate, Boddington Manor (Gloucester, UK), and Rowan as a Military Chaplain. Maud and Rowan moved back to Boddington permanently in 1962 when she inherited the estate. A mountain at the north-west end of Shuswap Lake (between the Anstey and Seymour Arms) was named Mount Grice-Hutchinson in 1978 after the Reverend. On July 9, 1936, Maud, her sister Violet Seeley, and Mary Diana Buckle arrived in Canada after having taken a ship over from Liverpool. They stayed at the Kananaskis Ranch from 4-7 August before starting on their trip. They had four guides and twelve pack horses to make the 300 mile (483 kilometer) trip to Jasper. Notes about the trip written by Maud later mention locations like the Red Deer River and White Rabbit Pass before arriving at the Saskatechewan River. After that, she names the Snow Dome Glacier, the Columbia Icefield, and Nigel Pass before arriving in Jasper. The four guides in her notes are named Edie Rowe, Edie Fraser, Smoky, and Chet [possibly Chet Ogan, a guide who worked for the Brewster family out of the Kananaskis Ranch in the 1930's].

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of 83 lantern slides and accompanying lecture notes. Topics include pack trains, camps, activities and scenic views, Banff and Jasper National Parks and areas. Documents include a handwritten script made by Maud Grice-Hutchinson to accompany the slides and a photocopied copy of the Brewster family's Kananaskis Ranch guestbook page 63, dated August 1936.

Notes: Not all images were taken by Grice-Hutchinson - some bear manufacturers' labels and were most likely purchased after the pack trip.

History / Biographical: Murray Hay is a self taught artist who left Regina at age 16 and began a career as a commercial artist. Murray Hay was born in 1931 and passed away in 2015 at the age of 84 years. Murray Hay moved to Alberta in1963? In 1976 Sir Rodney Touche approached him and asked if he would paint a ski map. The first ski map Murray painted was one of Lake Louise, the second was of Ski Big Three and the third was Sunshine Mountain ski resort

History / Biographical: Lantern slides were used for education, entertainment, and administrative purposes. Lantern slide shows were held in the home, classrooms, public halls, and theatres. Lantern slides were manufactured by companies to be sold in sets in order to tell a certain story, or made by individuals for their own purposes. These homemade slides could be made with a variety of techniques, but the easiest was to write (or draw) directly onto a piece of glass and seal it with a transparent lacquer or another piece of glass and then wrap the edges in binding tape. Another simple homemade method was to print text onto cellophane or translucent wax paper with a typewriter and then place the slip between 2 panes of glass and bind it. This was a useful method for churches in possession of magic lanterns to display lyrics to hymns and carols, as well as specific Bible verses, on the wall during a sermon or other community events. Homemade slides were also useful for administrative purposes. By writing directly onto a piece of glass with India ink or special slide paint, organizations could display figures, expenditures, or any other pertinent details during meetings.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of 49 lantern slides; subject matter pertaining to psalms, Christmas carols, financial report on the Banff Red Cross. There are 3 slides included that contain either typed or handwritten text on top of coloured photographs: PS-39 consists of a Christmas carol printed over an areal photo of the Chateau Lake Louise. PS-48 is a hand-written pslam over a photo of an unknown island. PS-49 is a typed Christmas carol over a photo of an unknown mountain peak.

Notes: A square cardboard box was also included with the slides, it held single-pane hand-written slides pertaining to Red Cross and church inventories, expenditures, and other administrative details. The box has what is probably a manufacturer's label on the lid, almost the entirety of which is obscured by a thick piece of brown tape that was used to hold the box closed (the tape was broken prior to accession). Written on the tape is "Cover Glasses 01" in pencil. The box was in poor condition with many joints broken, it was discarded. Donation also included a magic lantern, held in artifacts (105.05.1036 a,b).

Conservation: PS-36 glass panes replaced. Slide text is printed on transparent plastic, this slip was removed from the original broken glass housing, digitally scanned, and placed in 2 new pieces of glass. No binding tape available, the new slide is held together with flat string and placed in non-acidic paper.; PS-26 to PS-35 are single panes of glass with hand-written text that require delicate cleaning.; All glass panes, not including the text sides of PS-26 to PS-35 were cleaned.
